After My Fiancé Abandoned Me for His Niece Chapter 1

The rain started around six, the kind that turns Midtown into a smear of red taillights and gold windows. I was in the back of a cab, scrolling through caterer emails, thinking about seating charts that didn't matter anymore because Dane and I had been married in every way except the one that counted on paper. That thought would come back to bite me later. At the time it was just background noise, like the wipers dragging across the windshield.

The light at 47th and Lex was red. I remember that clearly. Red, and then headlights where there shouldn't have been headlights, and then the world tilted sideways and glass rained into my lap like it had been waiting for permission.

My head hit the window frame. Not hard enough to knock me out, just hard enough to make everything ring. My ribs screamed when I tried to sit up. Someone outside was shouting. Someone else was already on the phone with 911. I sat there with blood running warm down the side of my face and thought, stupidly, that I still had six seating charts to finish.

The paramedics were fast. A woman with a ponytail and steady hands got me on the gurney, told me her name was Renee, told me to stay still. I didn't listen. The second the ambulance doors shut, I was calling Dane.

One ring. Voicemail.

"Stay still," Renee said, pressing gauze to my temple.

I called again. Voicemail.

Third time. Voicemail.

I stared up at the fluorescent light on the ceiling of the ambulance, and it flickered once, like it was as tired as I was. I called a fourth time and let it ring out, and when the automated voice told me to leave a message, I finally did.

"Dane. I'm in an ambulance. Please call me back."

I closed my eyes. The siren was loud, but the silence in my chest was louder.

We pulled into the Bellevue ER bay, and just as the doors opened, my phone buzzed against my thigh. Not a call. A photo.

Red roses. A whole extravagant armful of them, cradled in a pair of hands I would know anywhere — his hands, the ones that used to trace the line of my spine when I couldn't sleep. My heart did something stupid and hopeful, some small idiot leap, because for half a second I thought, he's coming, he sent me flowers, he's on his way.

Then I read the caption.

*These are for you, Viv. Mochi was lucky to have you. I'm on my way.*

I read it twice, just to be sure I wasn't imagining it. I wasn't. He'd meant to send it to Vivian. He'd sent it to me by mistake.

I didn't cry. I didn't feel much of anything, actually, which scared me more than crying would have. I just turned the phone face-down on the gurney and let the ER doors swallow me whole.

Four hours. That's how long it took him.

By the time Dane walked into my recovery bay, I'd been stitched up above the temple, scanned for fractures, told my ribs were bruised and not broken, and moved to a curtained bed that smelled like antiseptic and cold coffee. He came in fast, like he was the one who'd been in an accident, his jacket still damp from the rain, and underneath it I caught a thread of perfume that wasn't mine. Rose and musk. Vivian's.

"Keira, thank God—" he started, and then, before I could even open my mouth, he kept going. "Vivian was completely hysterical. Mochi died this afternoon, she found him on the bathroom floor, she called me screaming, she's practically still a child, Keira, she had no one else to call—"

I let him finish. I always let him finish. Six years of letting him finish.

When he ran out of words, I looked at him, and I felt something in my chest go very still, like a lake freezing over in one long quiet breath.

"It's over, Dane."

He blinked. "What?"

"Us," I said. "It's over."

"Keira, you're in shock, you don't—"

"I'm not in shock. I'm the calmest I've been in six years." My voice didn't shake. I'd rehearsed this in my head so many times without realizing it that it came out smooth, like reading off a card. "And there's something you should know. Four years ago, the day of our wedding, when Vivian cut her wrists and you ran to the hospital instead of the courthouse — we never signed the license. You never went back for it. I checked, years ago. We were never actually married."

His face changed the way a building changes right before it falls — no crack you can see, just a stillness, and then the whole thing giving way at once.

"That's not — we said we'd reschedule—"

"We didn't." I said it flatly, an accountant closing a ledger. "So I don't owe you a divorce. I don't owe you anything."

He reached for my hand. I moved it, calm and precise, out of his reach, the way you'd move a glass away from the edge of a table.

A nurse came in to check my vitals, cheerful and oblivious, and Dane stepped back into the corner of the curtained bay and just stood there. He didn't argue. He didn't defend himself again. He just watched, silent, like a man standing in the wreckage of something he'd built with his own two hands, only now understanding it had been hollow the whole time.

I woke up gasping for air, my fingers clawing at a neck that was smooth instead of bruised. The air smelled of lavender and expensive starch, not the metallic tang of blood and the mold of the basement where I had just died. A text flashed on my phone from Derrick, the man I thought was the love of my life: "Good morning, my angel. I can't wait to see you tonight." The heart emoji mocked me, a remnant of a girl who was once stupid, blind, and pathetically in love. In my past life, I was the perfect, submissive fiancée. I didn't realize the "vitamins" Derrick gave me were actually a cocktail of drugs designed to keep me foggy and compliant while he and my own uncle dismantled my father’s company. I stood by him as my parents died in a "car accident" that I now know was a murder he orchestrated. By the time I realized I was married to the devil, he had already stripped me of my wealth, my family, and finally, my breath. I stared at the gold-embossed calendar on the vanity: June 12, 2014. The day of our engagement party. The day I originally signed my life away to a monster who saw me as nothing more than a bank account to be drained. I felt a cold, sharp rage replace the terror. I wasn't going to be the victim this time. I wasn't going to take his pills or wear the modest, pastel dress he chose to make me look like a saint. "I need a match," I whispered to the most dangerous man in the city, Branch Brewer, as I gripped his tie in a hotel hallway. "I want to spend your money until Derrick chokes on it. I want to watch his empire crack." Reborn on the morning of the gala, I’ve traded my white lace for black silk. The guest list is set, the press is waiting, and Derrick thinks he’s about to win it all. He has no idea that the "fragile" girl he murdered is back to burn his world to the ground.
