Chapter 2

The cab ride home was a blur of gray Seattle drizzle. My limbs still felt heavy from the sedative, but my mind was violently sharp.

I climbed the four flights of stairs to my apartment, unlocked the door, and stepped inside. I didn’t turn on the lights. I dropped my keys on the counter and sat on the edge of the couch in the dark.

On the back of my hand, a small purple bruise was already blooming where I had torn out the IV. It throbbed in time with my pulse.

I pressed my fingertips together, pressing hard until the nails turned white. It was a habit I had had since childhood, a way to keep myself from shaking when the ground fell out from under my feet.

Four years.

I sat there and watched four years unravel in the shadows. Every memory rewrote itself.

I thought about the late nights in law school when I made him dinner and quizzed him on torts until three in the morning. I thought about my twenty-second birthday, which I spent eating cold hospital cafeteria soup because Penny had a fever spike.

Penny. Sweet, fragile Penny, who folded colorful paper cranes for me with bruised, swollen fingers.

*“The donor is already sedated. She doesn’t suspect a thing.”*

Jensen’s voice echoed in the dark, cold and smooth as polished marble.

He had looked me in the eyes and kissed my forehead. He had told me I was brave. All while planning to carve a vital organ out of my body and hand it to a Senator’s daughter like a business card.

I reached for my phone, thinking of the police. But my thumb hovered over the screen. What would I tell them? An overheard phone call? A conversation in a hallway? I had no audio recordings. No signed paperwork. Jensen was a rising star in corporate law; I was just his girlfriend throwing an emotional fit on a hospital gurney. They would call it a domestic misunderstanding.

Then I thought of Penny. I could call her. I could warn her.

My chest ached, a deep, hollow pang. But how could I tell a dying twenty-year-old girl that her beloved older brother was using her fatal illness as an emotional weapon to harvest organs for his political ambitions? It would kill her faster than the kidney failure.

I waited for the tears to come, but my eyes stayed dry. The sadness was gone. In its place was something entirely new—a cold, quiet stillness.

My phone vibrated against the glass coffee table.

The screen lit up: *Jensen*.

I didn’t move. The screen went dark, then lit up again. And again.

He called eleven times in two hours. I never touched the phone.

Just past midnight, heavy footsteps sounded in the hallway.

They stopped right outside my door.

*Knock. Knock. Knock.*

“Rose?” Jensen’s voice came through the wood, muffled and strained. “Rose, I know you’re in there. Please. Just open the door for two minutes.”

I pulled my knees to my chest, my back flat against the wall beside the entrance. I didn’t breathe.

“Rose, you misunderstood,” he pleaded, his voice soft and tender. “It isn’t what you think. Let me explain the strategy. It was about funding for Penny’s care. I swear to you, baby, it was all for Penny.”

I stared at the brass deadbolt.

When I didn’t answer, the tenderness vanished. The veneer cracked wide open.

A heavy fist slammed against the wood.

“Rosalina!” Jensen barked, rattling the knob violently. “Stop acting like a child! Do you have any idea what’s at stake here? You can’t just walk away from this! Open the damn door!”

The wood shuddered under his blow.

I kept my fingertips pressed together. My heart beat steady and slow.

“You’re ruining everything!” he hissed through the crack of the frame, his breath ragged with fury. “You hear me? You’re throwing away our future over nothing!”

He kicked the base of the door once, hard.

Silence followed.

For five long minutes, neither of us moved. Finally, his dress shoes squeaked against the hallway linoleum. His footsteps faded down the stairwell.

I waited until the front building door slammed shut below. Then I stood up, turned the heavy deadbolt, and dragged a wooden dining chair over, wedging its back firmly beneath the doorknob.

At dawn, thin gray light crept through the window blinds.

I walked to the glass and pinched the plastic slats apart.

Parked directly across the street was Jensen’s black sedan. The exhaust pipe puffed steady white clouds into the morning chill.

Inside, Jensen sat behind the wheel.

Through the windshield, I saw his phone illuminate his face. He stared at the screen, and I watched his shoulders go rigid.

Later, the police reports would show the message he received at 6:15 AM from Senator Gonzalez’s chief of staff: *Bianca’s kidney function is dropping fast. Deliver the donor by noon or the deal is dead. No firm. No wedding. Nothing.*

Through the glass, four floors up, I watched the man I had loved for four years raise the phone to his ear.

His face was pale, his eyes hollowed out by greed and desperation. There was no hesitation left in him. He had run out of legitimate roads, so he was choosing a dark one.

He was dialing Dr. Marcus Hale—a disgraced surgeon stripped of his medical license, drowning in debt, running a back-alley clinic on the edge of the industrial district.

Jensen spoke into the receiver, his jaw set in stone. He hung up, looked straight up at my fourth-floor window, and put the car into drive.
