Chapter 3

The phone rang at seven that evening.

It wasn't Jensen. It was his mother.

I stared at the screen, my heart thumping against my ribs. I answered and pressed the receiver to my ear. I didn't even get to say hello.

"You selfish, ungrateful girl," Mrs. Holmes spat into the line.

Her voice sounded like dry gravel grinding together. Jensen had gone straight to her. Of course he had.

"After everything my son has done for you," she hissed. "After four years of him carrying you on his back! You would rather let an innocent person die than give up one hour of your precious comfort!"

I sat on the edge of my sofa in the dark. My fingertips pressed together so hard they went numb. "You know what he was doing," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "He lied to me. He lied to Penny."

"I don't care about your drama!" she snapped. "Jensen has a future. He has an opportunity of a lifetime, and you are throwing it away over pure spite!"

Through the line, I heard the faint clinking of porcelain.

Mr. Holmes was sitting right there at the kitchen table. He didn't say a word. He didn't tell his wife to stop. He didn't ask about Penny. He just ate in total silence.

It was the same quiet silence that had shaped Jensen his whole life. It was a silence that looked away from cruelty as long as it bought them social standing. That silence was the last checkpoint. And it had failed completely.

"You are nothing, Rosalina," Mrs. Holmes said coldly. "And you will regret this."

The line went dead.

***

By four in the morning, the silence in my apartment felt suffocating.

My mouth was dry as dust. I needed to move. I needed to breathe. I cracked my deadbolt, checked the empty hallway, and slipped toward the garbage chute by the stairwell.

That was my mistake.

A heavy hand clamped over my mouth from behind.

A sharp, sweet chemical stench hit my nose. A rag pressed down against my lips and nostrils.

I thrashed. My sneakers squeaked violently against the linoleum. I threw an elbow back, catching ribs, but strong arms wrapped around my chest like iron bands. The dark stairwell tilted sideways. My knees turned to water. The world faded into black before I could even let out a gasp.

***

When I woke up, my skin was ice-cold.

I was lying flat on a narrow metal table. Thick leather straps held my wrists and ankles down. My sweater had been cut away down the center, leaving my bare ribs exposed to the damp chill.

Above me, a single fluorescent bulb flickered and hummed.

The room was tiny and smelled of sour bleach, rust, and mold. The medical equipment stacked against the concrete walls looked decades old.

Footsteps scraped across the floor.

A man in stained surgical scrubs stepped into my line of sight. He had sunken cheeks, gray skin, and bloodshot eyes. Dr. Marcus Hale.

Behind him stood Jensen.

Jensen looked terrible. His dress shirt was wrinkled. Sweat stained his collar. But his jaw was set, hard and ugly. He looked at the wall just above my head, refusing to meet my eyes.

"Jensen," I rasped, pulling at the restraints. The leather bit deep into my raw wrists. "Jensen, look at me! Let me go!"

Jensen didn't blink. He checked his watch. "Keep her quiet, Hale. Senator Gonzalez’s driver is waiting at the south dock. We have thirty minutes to harvest and pack the cooler. Do it now."

Dr. Hale picked up a steel tray from a cart. He didn't look angry. He looked entirely hollowed out, like a machine running on fumes.

"We are using a lateral flank incision," Dr. Hale said in a flat, clinical drone. He tapped an air bubble out of a large glass syringe. "You will be under general anesthesia within thirty seconds. You won't feel the nephrectomy itself. If you stop struggling against the cuffs, the soft tissue damage will be minimal."

"No!" I shrieked.

I bucked against the metal table. The iron frame rattled against the floor.

"Jensen, look at me!" I screamed. "Look at what you're doing!"

Jensen turned his back to me. He folded his arms over his chest. Coward. He couldn't even watch.

I screamed again with everything left in my lungs. The sound hit the damp concrete walls and died. We were underground. Nobody was coming.

Dr. Hale stepped close. The sharp needle gleamed under the dirty bulb. He reached for my neck.

*CRASH.*

The reinforced metal door exploded off its frame with a deafening boom.

Concrete dust and splintered wood blew across the room.

Before the slab hit the floor, a tall figure surged through the debris.

Nathan Richardson.

He didn't wait for backup. He was the point man. His eyes were burning with a dark, lethal focus.

"Federal agents!" armed men roared behind him, tactical lights flooding the gloom. "Get down! On the floor! Down!"

Jensen stumbled back with a terrified yelp, knocking a tray of scalpels onto the tiles. Dr. Hale dropped the syringe. The glass shattered.

Nathan didn't look at Jensen. He didn't look at Hale.

He crossed the room in two massive strides, his trench coat snapping behind him.

He reached my side and instantly gripped the leather strap at my wrist. His hands were large, warm, and rock-steady against my freezing skin.

"I have you, Rose," Nathan whispered, his voice rough and low. "You're safe."
