Chapter 1

The hospital room was freezing. I sat on the edge of the gurney in a thin blue gown. My skin was covered in goosebumps, but Jensen’s hand was warm over mine.

For four years, Jensen Holmes had been my whole world. We grew up on the same street in Seattle. I loved him through college, through law school, and through every late night he spent studying for the bar. Now, I was about to give him a piece of my own body.

"You're the bravest girl I've ever known, Rose," Jensen said softly.

He looked at me with clear, steady eyes. He smiled, squeezing my fingers.

"I'm just glad I'm a match," I murmured. My tongue felt a little thick. The nurse had already injected a mild sedative into my IV line. "Penny deserves a long, happy life. She's only twenty."

Penny was his younger sister. I loved her like my own family. Over the last two years, her kidneys had failed. She had spent months in hospital beds, smiling weakly and folding tiny paper cranes for me. Losing an organ terrified me, but saving Penny made it an easy choice.

Jensen leaned down and kissed my forehead. His lips felt cool against my skin.

"I'll be right outside the whole time," he whispered. "I just have to take a quick call from the office. Five minutes, okay?"

"Okay," I said, leaning back into the pillows.

He let go of my hand and stepped out into the hallway.

A nurse wheeled my gurney toward the pre-op corridor. "We're just waiting for the operating room to clear, sweetie," she said kindly. Then she stepped away to grab a chart.

The corridor was quiet. Overhead, the fluorescent lights hummed. The air smelled of sharp antiseptic.

Then I heard a voice just around the corner. It was Jensen.

He didn't sound worried or emotional. His voice was low, crisp, and completely businesslike. It was the tone he used when he closed a legal deal.

"Everything is on schedule," Jensen said into his phone. "The surgical team is scrubbing in now."

I closed my heavy eyes, smiling a little. I thought he was updating his parents.

"Yes, sir," Jensen continued. "The kidney will be prepped and transferred directly to your private suite. Bianca won't have to wait another day."

My eyes snapped open.

*Bianca?*

I stopped breathing. The warmth from the sedative turned to ice.

"I understand, Senator," Jensen said, his tone smooth and respectful. "Once the transplant succeeds, the press release will announce our engagement. And your partners at the D.C. firm will have my senior associate contract ready by Monday."

He paused, listening. A soft chuckle came from his throat.

"Don't worry," Jensen added coldly. "The donor is already sedated. She doesn't suspect a thing. She thinks it's for Penny."

The air vanished from my lungs.

Every word landed like a blade.

*The donor.* That was what he called me.

Not Rose. Not his partner. Not the woman who loved him.

Penny wasn't getting the kidney. Bianca Gonzalez was. The Senator's daughter. Jensen wasn't saving his sister's life. He was selling my body to buy his way into Washington.

Footsteps approached. Two nurses and an orderly walked up to my gurney.

"All right, Rosalina," one of them said with a bright smile. "Time to roll you into the OR."

A wave of pure adrenaline surged through my chest, burning away the drug haze.

I didn't hesitate. I reached down, grabbed the plastic tube in the back of my hand, and ripped it out.

The needle tore against my skin. A sharp sting flared, and a dark bead of blood welled up on my knuckles.

"Oh! What are you doing?" the nurse gasped, reaching for my arm.

I swung my legs over the side of the bed and sat straight up. My bare feet hit the cold floor.

Jensen rounded the corner, slipping his phone into his suit pocket. He looked relaxed and polished. Then he saw me sitting up. He saw the blood dripping onto the white sheet.

"Rose?" he said, his brow furrowing. "What's going on? Get back on the bed."

I looked straight into his eyes. My voice was very quiet. It was the steadiest thing in the room.

"Cancel the surgery," I told the team. "I refuse the donation."

The corridor went dead silent. The surgical team froze.

Jensen's face shifted. The polished mask cracked open. "Rose, stop playing around. You're loopy from the sedative. Lay back down."

"I heard you, Jensen," I said.

His breath caught.

"Bianca Gonzalez," I said, each word landing like a stone. "The Senator. The D.C. firm. The engagement."

Jensen’s color drained instantly. He took a step back, his mouth opening, but no sound came out.

"You called me the donor," I said. My chest felt hollow, but my hands didn't shake. "We are finished. Effective right now."

I pulled my hospital gown tight around my back, stood up, and walked away from the bed.

"Rose, wait!" Jensen scrambled after me, grabbing my wrist.

I yanked my arm away. "Don't touch me."

"You don't understand," he stammered, his charm peeling away into raw panic. "You misunderstood. It's complicated. I can explain everything! You're making a terrible mistake, Rose!"

I didn't argue. I didn't raise my voice. I walked straight past him into the small pre-op room where my clothes were stored.

I pulled on my jeans and my sweater in absolute silence. I tied my sneakers.

Jensen stood in the doorway, blocking the exit. He ran a hand through his hair, sweating through his collar.

"Think about what you're doing," he pleaded, his voice cracking. "If you walk out, you ruin everything. Senator Gonzalez—"

I grabbed my purse and coat.

I stepped right up to him. He was taller than me, but he looked tiny. Empty. Like a complete stranger.

"Don't call me," I said.

I brushed past his shoulder. I walked down the long, bright hallway, out through the sliding glass doors, and into the cold morning air alone.

Behind me, Jensen stood frozen in the corridor, phone in hand, with nowhere left to turn.
