Jilted Bride: The Billionaire Heiress Returns Chapter 1

The sacred, solemn wedding march echoed under the magnificent vaulted ceiling of St. Patrick's Cathedral. Wearing a pristine white gown, Brenna stepped onto the red carpet, walking gracefully toward Kadin Mccormick at the other end of the altar.

Bathed in the warm, golden light of the cathedral, Kadin wore a tailored white suit. The lighting softened his features, highlighting the gentle, refined aura that had captivated her when they first met.

They had known each other for three years. They had weathered storms and navigated countless hardships together, and today, she was finally getting her wish.

The only regret was that her own family had never approved of or blessed this marriage.

When Kadin stepped forward and handed her the bridal bouquet, tears of quiet joy shimmered in Brenna's ice-blue eyes.

"Kadin Mccormick, do you take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife? To live together in holy matrimony, to love her, comfort her, honor and keep her, in sickness and in health, as long as you both shall live?" The priest stood before them, looking at the couple with a kind, expectant gaze.

Brenna suppressed the flutter in her heart and looked at Kadin, waiting for the vow that would seal their future.

But Kadin's face was unnaturally pale. There was no joy in his expression, only a heavy, conflicted hesitation. He stood frozen, refusing to open his mouth.

Just then—

"Kadin! Something terrible happened!"

Phoebe Mccormick, Kadin's sister, burst through the cathedral doors, her face streaked with tears. She stumbled down the aisle, sobbing like a helpless child. "It's Hayleigh... she... she..."

A sudden wave of unease washed over Brenna. Her brow furrowed slightly, and she instinctively tightened her grip on Kadin's hand.

She knew exactly how much the name Hayleigh Kerr meant to Kadin.

Hayleigh was the one who had been his first—and perhaps her only—true love. Years ago, when the Mccormick family faced a severe financial crisis, Hayleigh had abandoned Kadin for an opportunity abroad. Kadin, a man of immense pride, had cut all ties with her in a fit of anger and chosen Brenna instead.

But just a month ago, Hayleigh had suddenly returned.

Hearing the name, Kadin's demeanor shattered. His voice tightened with raw panic. "What happened to Hayleigh?!"

"She's bleeding so much, and they can't stop it!" Phoebe choked out. "The doctors say... they say she might not make it!"

Without a second thought, Kadin forcefully shook off Brenna's hand and started to rush past her.

"Stop right there."

Brenna took a steadying step forward and caught his wrist. Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried an undeniable, chilling authority. She didn't tremble, nor did she let the whispering crowd see her break. Her gaze locked onto his, sharp and unyielding. "Kadin, today is our wedding day. Are you sure you want to walk out of those doors?"

The murmurs from the pews grew louder, and sarcastic, scrutinizing stares fell upon her like needles. But Brenna stood impeccably tall, her spine perfectly straight. "We finish the ceremony first," she stated calmly, not begging, but demanding the basic respect she was owed.

"Hayleigh was in a devastating car crash on her way to the airport. She was leaving town today because of our wedding. I can't just leave her there to die."

Kadin tried to pull his arm away, only to find Brenna's grip remarkably steady. His face darkened, and his eyes grew ruthlessly cold. "Brenna, you know very well that our marriage is nothing more than a transaction. All you need to do is play your part as Mrs. Mccormick. My personal affairs are none of your business!"

A transaction.

Brenna's pupils slightly constricted. She stared at Kadin's cold, resolute face. The initial shock in her eyes rapidly cooled, melting into a faint, icy smirk of self-deprecation.

When she spoke, her voice was terrifyingly calm, yet laced with a piercing clarity. "So, in your eyes, everything we've shared for the past three years was merely a transaction?"

"Yes!" Kadin answered decisively, without a shred of hesitation.

He pulled his arm free, dropping a perfunctory, weightless, "I'm sorry," before rushing down the aisle without a single backward glance.

Brenna stood alone at the altar, watching his retreating figure disappear through the heavy oak doors. A dull, suffocating pain sliced through her chest, a painful reminder of three years of wasted devotion.

But she didn't shed a single tear.

As the chaotic flashes of cameras erupted and the Mccormick family scrambled in damage-control mode, Brenna slowly raised her hand. With absolute grace, she unpinned her veil, letting the delicate lace cascade to the marble floor.

Then, she slipped the wedding ring off her finger.

Clink.

She dropped it onto the plush red carpet.

Her face was composed, her ice-blue eyes entirely devoid of warmth. She didn't look like a bride left at the altar; she looked like a queen who had just discarded a worthless, tarnished crown.

Lifting her chin, Brenna turned her back on the altar. Dragging the hem of her magnificent gown, she walked down the aisle, step by steady step, maintaining her immaculate dignity as she walked out of the cathedral and out of Kadin Mccormick's life forever.
