The crystal chandeliers of Le Ciel cast a golden glow across the white tablecloths of Seattle's most exclusive restaurant. I smoothed my silk dress as the waiter poured another glass of champagne, the bubbles rising like tiny prayers toward heaven. Eight years of my life had led to this moment—finalizing wedding arrangements with Jayden Sullivan, the man I thought would be my forever. "To us," Jayden said, raising his glass. His blue eyes sparkled in the candlelight, but something in them seemed different tonight. Calculating. Detached. I clinked my glass against his, the crystal singing softly. "To our future." The waiter retreated, leaving us in our private corner booth overlooking Elliott Bay. The water gleamed with moonlight, much like the diamond on my finger—a five-carat beauty that had belonged to Jayden's grandmother.

From Betrayal to New Love Chapter 1

"To our future."

The waiter retreated, leaving us in our private corner booth overlooking Elliott Bay. The water gleamed with moonlight, much like the diamond on my finger—a five-carat beauty that had belonged to Jayden's grandmother.

"Eliana," Jayden began, setting down his glass with deliberate care. "There's something important I want to discuss before we proceed with the wedding plans."

My heart quickened. In my experience, nothing good ever followed those words.

"I've been doing a lot of thinking about what we both want from this marriage," he continued, his voice unnervingly calm. "About what would truly make us happy."

"Okay..." I tilted my head, studying his face. The man across from me suddenly seemed like a stranger.

"Mckenna means everything to me," he said, his words dropping into the silence between us like stones. "She's my true love, Eliana. The woman who understands me completely."

The champagne turned bitter in my mouth. "Mckenna? Your assistant?"

"Yes." He reached across the table, his fingers brushing mine in that familiar way that once made my heart flutter. Now it made my skin crawl. "I'm proposing that she join our marriage."

"Join our..." The words wouldn't compute in my brain.

"As a second wife," he clarified, as if he were suggesting we add a third car to our garage. "You would be the official Mrs. Sullivan, for family purposes. The Wagner-Sullivan alliance would remain intact. But Mckenna would be my beloved companion."

I stared at him, certain I'd misheard. "You want me to share you? With your assistant?"

"Not share," he corrected, his tone patronizing. "It's about accommodating different needs. You're the perfect wife for our families, Eliana. The Wagner heiress. But Mckenna is...she's special to me."

"Special," I repeated, the word tasting like ash.

"In many cultures, this arrangement is perfectly normal," he continued, as if lecturing a child. "Love shouldn't be confined by traditional structures. We could all benefit from this."

The restaurant seemed to tilt around me. Eight years. Eight years of planning our future together, and he wanted to bring another woman into our marriage? The humiliation burned through me like acid.

"How long?" My voice came out steadier than I felt.

Jayden's hesitation told me everything before he even opened his mouth.

"A year," he finally admitted. "But it's not about the time, Eliana. It's about the connection we have."

"A year?" I repeated, my voice rising despite my best efforts. "You've been cheating on me for a year, and now you want to formalize it?"

People at nearby tables turned to look. I didn't care.

"It's not cheating when it's love," he insisted, reaching for my hand again.

I pulled back as if burned. "Don't touch me."

"You need to understand—"

"What I understand," I cut him off, "is that you've been living a lie while planning our wedding. While I've been designing invitations and choosing flowers and—" My voice broke, dammit.

"Eliana, be reasonable. This could work for all of us."

Something inside me snapped. The careful control I'd maintained my entire life—the poised Wagner heiress who never caused scenes—disappeared in an instant.

"Reasonable?" I stood up, my chair scraping against the hardwood floor. The entire restaurant fell silent.

I slapped him across the face so hard my palm stung. The sound echoed through the hushed room.

"You want reasonable?" I yanked the diamond ring from my finger. "How's this for reasonable?"

I threw it at him. It hit his chest and bounced onto the table, rolling to a stop beside his water glass.

"We're done," I announced, loud enough for everyone to hear. "The engagement is over."

Jayden's face had gone pale, a red mark blooming where I'd struck him. "Eliana, you're making a scene."

"No," I said, gathering my purse and coat. "I'm making a choice."

I turned and walked toward the exit, feeling dozens of eyes following me. Behind me, I heard Jayden call my name, but I didn't look back.

The cool night air hit my face as I pushed through the restaurant doors, leaving behind the man who thought I would accept being the "other woman" in my own marriage.

As the doors closed behind me, I could hear the whispers already beginning—the scandal of Eliana Wagner walking out on Jayden Sullivan would be all over Seattle by morning.

Let them talk. I'd rather be alone than humiliated.
