Chapter 2

"Tell me exactly how you would strip me down and make me forget—"

My recorded voice poured through the conference room speakers, soft enough to sound intimate and loud enough to destroy me.

Caleb's thumb hit the screen. The audio died mid-sentence.

Silence rang in its place.

David Mercer looked from the speaker mounted in the ceiling to Caleb's phone. Gregory Dawson coughed into his fist. Sarah's eyes went wide, then dropped to the table in a desperate attempt to give me privacy after it was already gone.

Caleb set his phone face down. His expression did not change.

"Spam advertisement," he said. "The algorithms are getting aggressive."

David gave a startled laugh. "That was one personalized advertisement, Thorne."

"Which is why the company blocks unsecured applications on work devices." Caleb unplugged his laptop from the conference system as if nothing had happened. "We are done for today. Harper will submit a compliant budget by five tomorrow."

I could not feel my hands.

Six months earlier, I had walked into my bedroom and found Mark tangled in our sheets with his receptionist. That humiliation had been private until the neighbors heard me throwing his golf clubs into the hall. This was worse. This had happened under recessed lighting, in front of every person whose respect I needed to keep my career alive.

Chairs scraped back. Folders snapped shut. Nobody met my eyes.

"Harper," David said carefully, "we will revisit the east wing after the revised numbers."

"Of course." My voice sounded as if it belonged to someone standing across the room.

Gregory hurried out. Two board members followed him, already whispering. Sarah remained beside the coffee station until the others had gone.

"Rough morning," she murmured.

"That is one description."

"For what it is worth, I believed the spam explanation."

I looked at her.

She winced. "I wanted to believe it."

Despite everything, a laugh almost escaped me. It came out as a strangled breath.

Sarah squeezed my arm. "I will tell the drafting team the meeting ran long. Take five minutes."

When the door closed behind her, I shoved the Oakhaven plans into my leather portfolio. The draft injunction went in last. My hands shook so badly that the zipper caught twice.

Caleb remained at the head of the table, calmly gathering his notes.

I kept my eyes on the exit. If I reached the elevator, I could lock myself in a restroom on another floor, delete the app, move to another country, and start a new life under a name that had never recorded anything suggestive.

I made it three steps.

"Harper."

I kept walking.

"Stop."

"I have a budget to ruin for you."

He moved faster than I expected. One moment the doorway was open; the next, Caleb stood in it. He loosened his navy tie with one sharp pull, then folded his arms.

"Move," I said.

"You sent that to me."

The direct statement hit harder than the audio.

I lifted my chin. "You said it was spam."

"I lied to save you from being discussed in every office between here and Chicago."

"How noble."

"Do not mistake discretion for nobility."

"Then what do you want? An apology for a private message you had no right to play in public?"

"My phone was linked to the presentation system. The app opened the newest audio automatically."

"Convenient."

His gaze narrowed. "You think I planned that?"

"I think you plan everything."

"Not that."

For one second, something unguarded crossed his face. Surprise, maybe. Or irritation with himself. Then the executive mask returned.

I stepped to the side. He matched me.

"Excuse me."

"Who was the message for?"

My pulse stumbled. "None of your business."

"It arrived on my phone. That makes it my business."

"Then delete it."

"I did."

"Good. We are finished."

"We are not."

He looked at the portfolio pressed against my chest. "You have an injunction in there."

I tightened my grip. "You have no proof."

"You always carry the folder with the brass corner guards when you intend to threaten legal action."

I hated that he had noticed. I hated even more that he had been watching closely enough to know my habits.

"The Landmarks Preservation Commission will stop you," I said. "The east wing is protected pending review."

"Pending review is not a ruling."

"It will be once they see the engineering report."

"And when they see the financing gap?"

"There is no gap. There is a choice. You would rather spend three percent on another glass tower than save a building people actually care about."

His mouth tightened. "You confuse public affection with financial value."

"You confuse cruelty with competence."

The air changed.

Caleb kicked the heavy oak door shut. The latch clicked behind him.

I stepped back. My shoulder blades struck the whiteboard.

"Open it."

He crossed the room until the tips of his shoes touched mine. One hand came up beside my head, palm flat against the board. He did not touch me, but the space between us disappeared. Mint and cedar cut through the smell of coffee.

"Tell me exactly how you would strip me down," he murmured, repeating my words in a lower, rougher voice. "And make me forget."

My stomach dropped.

"It was an AI-generated advertisement," I said. "You told everyone yourself."

"Did I?" His gaze dipped to my mouth. "Because it sounded exactly like my lead architect asking a stranger to distract her."

"You imagined that."

"I heard you."

"Then your hearing is the only impressive thing about you."

A flicker of amusement touched his eyes. "You were not nearly this brave in the recording."

"Delete it and get out of my way."

"Already deleted."

"Then there is nothing left to discuss."

"There is one thing." He leaned closer, his breath warm against my cheek. "You spend every day looking at me as if you want to set my office on fire. Yet that voice sounded like a woman begging someone to take control."

"You know nothing about me."

"I know you recorded that message before this meeting. I know you sent it while arguing with me. And I know you are embarrassed because part of you wanted the man on the other end to hear exactly how badly I got under your skin."

Anger burned through the humiliation.

Caleb's mouth hovered beside my ear.

"Say it again," he whispered. "This time, say it to my face."
