Chapter 3

I shoved both hands hard against Caleb's chest. He did not stumble, but the sheer surprise flashing through his dark eyes gave me the half-second I needed. I ducked under his arm, grabbed the brass handle, and yanked the boardroom door open.

"We are not finished here, Harper," Caleb called out.

"I am," I shot back, not looking over my shoulder.

I bolted down the hallway. I bypassed the elevators and pushed through the heavy fire doors, taking the stairs two at a time. I practically threw myself into the back of a yellow cab idling outside the glass lobby.

Thirty minutes later, I slammed my apartment door shut. I kicked my pumps against the baseboard, sending them skidding across the hardwood floor. My hands shook so violently I dropped my phone twice before finally unlocking the screen.

The chat application glared red. A new message from North waited at the top of my inbox.

"If I had you against a wall right now, sweet Harper, talking would be the absolute last thing on my mind."

I stared at the glowing text. The raw, unfiltered heat of his words clashed entirely with the robotic, ice-cold executive I had just escaped. Caleb Thorne cared about profit margins, demolition schedules, and asserting dominance in boardrooms. He did not say things like this. He did not call anyone sweet.

I needed to be absolutely sure.

I tapped the phone icon at the top of the chat window. The line rang once, twice, three times. I pressed the speaker tight against my ear. I strained to catch any background noise. I wanted to hear sirens, office chatter, or the hum of the firm's elevator bank.

"Hey."

The single word rumbled through the receiver, deep and impossibly soft. A rush of wind hissed through the mic, followed by the faint rustle of leaves. He was outside.

"You actually called," North said.

"I needed to hear your voice," I replied, keeping my tone perfectly even.

"Rough day?"

"You have no idea." I squeezed my eyes shut and pressed my forehead against the cool drywall of my hallway. "I just need to know who I am talking to."

"You are talking to me," he murmured. "Is someone giving you trouble?"

"My boss," I said, testing the waters. "He is trying to bulldoze a century-old landmark. The Oakhaven project."

"The historical site downtown?" North asked.

"Yes. He completely gutted my preservation budget today. He wants to replace the original masonry with modern commercial units just to save three percent on the bottom line."

I held my breath. I waited for the hesitation. I listened for the pitch of his voice to change, for the defensive snap Caleb always used when his authority was questioned. I wanted him to argue about the tax credits. I wanted him to bring up the Landmarks Commission.

A low, rich chuckle vibrated through the phone.

"Sounds like a corporate drone," North said smoothly. "Why are you letting a man in a cheap suit ruin your evening?"

"His suits are actually very expensive," I muttered, the fight draining out of me.

"I do not care about his suits, Harper. I care about you. You let this guy live rent-free in your head."

"He cornered me in the boardroom today," I confessed, the words spilling out before I could stop them.

"Did he hurt you?" The playful warmth vanished from North's voice, replaced by a sudden, sharp edge.

"No. He just intimidated me. He likes to play games."

"Then stop playing his game," North advised. "Focus on something else. Focus on this."

My shoulders dropped. The tight knot in my chest uncoiled. Caleb would never call himself a corporate drone. He would never brush off a direct insult to his wardrobe, and he certainly would not soothe my ego. He definitely would not express genuine concern over my physical safety from himself.

The sheer absurdity of my suspicion washed over me. It was just a bizarre, horrifying coincidence. The algorithm had simply pulled a voice file and played it at the worst possible second.

"You are right," I said, exhaling a long, shaky breath. "I am letting work get to me."

"Leave work at the office," North told me, his tone dropping into that familiar, hypnotic cadence. "Right now, it is just you and me. Tell me what you are wearing."

"A silk blouse," I said, tracing the top button. "And a very stiff pencil skirt."

"Take the skirt off."

I swallowed hard. "North, I should probably go to sleep. I have to fix that budget tomorrow."

"Five minutes," he coaxed. "Let me help you unwind."

"Not tonight," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "I am too exhausted to even think straight."

"Alright," he agreed, though a hint of disappointment colored his tone. "Get some rest, Harper. We will pick this up tomorrow."

"Goodnight, North."

"Sweet dreams."

I pulled the phone away from my ear to hit the red button.

A sharp, violent crack exploded through the speaker.

I flinched, bringing the device back up. "North? Are you okay?"

Silence. The call had disconnected.

I stared at the black screen, the sharp sound of shattering glass echoing in my head. I tossed the phone onto the kitchen counter and went to the bathroom to wash my face. The cold water did little to erase the exhaustion settling into my bones. I crawled into bed, pulling the duvet up to my chin, trying to push the sound of that breaking glass out of my mind.

The next morning, I walked into the firm at exactly eight o'clock. The bullpen was mostly empty. The overhead fluorescent lights hummed a dull, steady tune. I clutched my revised Oakhaven folder to my chest, making a beeline for the breakroom to grab a coffee before facing the day.

I pushed the glass door open.

Caleb stood next to the industrial espresso machine. He wore a crisp white button-down shirt, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He held a small plastic dustpan in his left hand and a miniature broom in his right. He swept a pile of jagged white ceramic shards into the trash can.

"Good morning, Harper," Caleb said, not looking up from the mess.

"What happened?" I asked, freezing in the doorway.

"A minor accident," he replied, dumping the broken pieces into the bin. "I was on a phone call last night and lost my grip."

"A phone call," I repeated, my voice hollow.

"Yes. A rather frustrating one." He set the dustpan on the counter and turned to face me.

My gaze dropped from the trash can directly to his right hand.

A pristine white bandage was wrapped tightly around his index finger.
