Chapter 1

The text came in at six.

I was standing in front of my closet, holding the navy dress Brady liked. The one he said made my eyes look darker. I'd ironed it that morning. Steamed it again just an hour ago to get the hem perfect.

"Stuck at the office, babe. Happy New Year đź–¤"

I read it twice. Then I set the phone face-down on the dresser and stared at the dress in my hands. The fabric was soft. Expensive. I'd bought it because Brady mentioned once — just once — that navy was his favorite color.

Five years. Five New Year's Eves. And this was supposed to be the one. The dinner where we finally sat down with both families. Where his parents met mine. Where we stopped being a someday couple and became a soon couple.

I hung the dress back in the closet. Pulled on jeans and a sweater. Put on my coat. My phone buzzed again — a follow-up text with a champagne emoji and a promise to make it up to me. I didn't answer. I just locked the door behind me and drove to my parents' house.

The Collins family New Year's dinner was already in full swing when I walked in. My brother Derek was opening wine in the kitchen. My father was telling a story I'd heard three times. And Angie — Derek's wife — was perched on the arm of the sofa with a glass in her hand and that look on her face. The one that said she'd been waiting for me.

"Elaina!" She stood up, arms open. "Where's Brady?"

I smiled. "Working."

"Again?" Angie tilted her head. Her voice dropped into that sympathetic register she always used when she was about to say something cruel. "Honey, I don't want to worry you, but… he's been doing that a lot lately, hasn't he?"

I shrugged. "He's busy."

"I'm sure." She took a sip of wine. "But you know how men are. If they're not making time, it's because they're making time for something else. Or someone else."

Derek glanced over from the kitchen. He didn't say anything.

Angie leaned closer. "I'm just saying — maybe you're holding on a little too tight. Some men need a woman who keeps their attention. You know?"

I nodded. Smiled again. Excused myself to the living room.

I sat on the couch and pulled out my phone. I didn't want to think about Brady or Angie or the navy dress hanging in my closet. I just wanted noise. Distraction. I opened TikTok and started scrolling.

Cooking videos. Dance trends. A puppy in a sweater. Then a couple clip.

I almost scrolled past it. But something made me stop.

The video was short. A woman leaning against a man on a couch. His face was angled away from the camera. Just his shoulder, his arm, his hand resting on her knee. The caption read: "my favorite way to spend New Year's đź’•."

The account name was @goldie.everyday.

Goldie.

My Goldie.

I stared at the screen. The man's hand. The watch on his wrist. Audemars Piguet. Rose gold. The same one Brady wore on our first date. The same one he wore every day.

I looked closer. The couch. The throw pillow in the corner — the gray one with the geometric pattern. The kitchen light in the background, falling at that specific angle.

That was Brady's apartment.

I sat very still. My chest felt tight. I scrolled up to the account name and clicked through to Goldie's profile.

Months of posts. Dozens of videos.

I started from the top and worked backward.

A morning-after vlog. Goldie in an oversized men's shirt, laughing into the camera. The apartment behind her unmistakable.

A dinner date at Locanda Verde. The same restaurant Brady took me for our first anniversary.

A cosmetic clinic video. Goldie in a waiting room, whispering to the camera: "doing this for my man đź’•. Gotta keep him interested."

A "get ready with me" clip. Goldie applying foundation, talking to her followers. "Some girls just don't even try. Like babe, put on concealer before your man starts looking elsewhere."

Then the final video. Posted two days ago.

A save-the-date graphic. Elegant script over a photo of the Hoffman family estate in Connecticut. "Join us for our engagement celebration — January 6th."

I stopped breathing.

I went back through every video. I screenshotted each one. I checked the dates. Cross-referenced them with my own calendar. With Brady's texts.

"Working late."

"Stuck in a meeting."

"Can't make it tonight, babe."

Every single one matched.

I organized the screenshots into folders. Labeled them by date. Backed them up to the cloud. My hands didn't shake. I didn't cry. I just worked.

When I was done, I sat back against the couch. The noise of the party felt far away. Angie's voice. Derek's laugh. My father's story.

I looked down at my phone. At the last screenshot. The engagement announcement.

Then I let myself cry.

Just for a minute. Just enough to feel it.

Then I wiped my face. Stood up. Walked to the bathroom and washed my hands. Looked at myself in the mirror.

I didn't look different. I thought I would. But I just looked like me.

I went back to the living room. Sat down. Opened a new note on my phone.

And I started to plan.
