Chapter 2

I didn't sleep.

I sat on my bed with my laptop open and the screenshots arranged in folders on my desktop. Goldie's TikTok account on one screen. Brady's texts on the other. I started building the timeline.

March 14th. Brady's text: "Client dinner running late. Don't wait up."

Goldie's post from the same night: a video of her and a man's hand — his watch visible — at Locanda Verde. The caption: "best pasta in the city 🍝💕."

Locanda Verde. Where Brady took me for our first anniversary.

I wrote it down. Moved to the next one.

April 22nd. Brady's text: "Stuck at the office. Presentation prep."

Goldie's post: a morning-after vlog. Her in an oversized shirt. The kitchen light behind her falling at that angle. Brady's apartment.

I kept going.

May. June. July. August.

Every "working late" text matched a post. Every canceled date lined up with a hotel check-in story. Every excuse had a timestamp and a location and a piece of evidence I could hold in my hand.

By midnight, I had forty-three matches.

I leaned back against the headboard and stared at the screen. The folders were labeled by month. The files were backed up in three places. I'd even cross-referenced Brady's shared calendar — the one he gave me access to years ago so I could "plan around his schedule."

He never took me off it.

I opened the calendar now. Scrolled forward. Found the entry for January 6th.

"Family celebration. Hoffman estate. 6 PM."

No details. No context. Just a block of time marked "busy."

I clicked through to the guest list he'd attached. A habit of his — he always added notes about who would be at family events so he could prep conversation topics.

Saul and Margo Hoffman. Arturo and Laney Perry. Six of Brady's senior colleagues from the Hoffman Group. A few cousins. A few family friends.

Everyone who mattered.

I sat very still. Then I opened a new browser tab and pulled up the Hoffman Group's internal directory. Found the email addresses for Brady's entire department. Twenty-three people.

I drafted a message.

Subject: Fwd: Celebration Event — January 6th

Body: "Hi all — I think this was sent to me by mistake, but wanted to pass it along in case anyone's attending. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!"

I attached Goldie's save-the-date graphic. The one with the elegant script and the photo of the Hoffman estate.

Then I read it three times. Adjusted the tone. Made it lighter. More casual. The kind of message someone forwards without thinking too hard.

I hit send at 1:47 a.m.

Then I opened my text thread with Margo Hoffman. We'd exchanged messages a few times over the years — polite check-ins, holiday greetings, the occasional dinner coordination that never actually happened.

I typed: "Hi Mrs. Hoffman! I saw the event on the 6th — so excited to finally meet in person. See you there!"

I sent it before I could second-guess myself.

Then I did the same with Laney Perry. A woman who used to hug me every time she saw me. Who called me her "second daughter."

"Hi Laney — can't wait to celebrate with you all on the 6th! It's been too long. 💕"

I put the phone down. Stared at the ceiling.

My chest felt tight. My hands were cold. But I wasn't crying. I wasn't shaking. I was just… waiting.

I opened my laptop again. Pulled up a travel site. Searched for coastal rentals available the week of January 7th.

I found a small house in Montauk. Right on the water. Available for ten days. I booked it without looking at the price.

Because I already knew. When this was over — when I walked out of that estate and got in my car — I would need somewhere to go. Somewhere quiet. Somewhere I could fall apart without an audience.

I closed the laptop. Lay down. Pulled the blanket up to my chin.

My phone buzzed.

A text from Brady.

"Miss you. Can't wait to see you this week 🖤."

I read it twice. Then I turned the phone face-down on the nightstand.

I didn't answer.

I just closed my eyes and waited for morning.
