I Almost Slept with the Bride's Father Chapter 1

I became a mother before I learned how to drive.

At fifteen, I signed my son's hospital bill with a shaking hand and a blue bracelet still cutting into my wrist.

For eighteen years, everyone praised me only when I disappeared behind Ethan's needs.

Then Grant found me in a hotel bar and asked for nothing except my first name.

No last names.

No past.

No children.

Outside room 1816, he kissed me like I was a woman, not a warning label.

I handed his key card back and ran.

Three days later, my son raised a champagne glass beside his bride-to-be.

Her father stepped behind me to fix my necklace, and his hand settled on my waist.

Ethan saw it before I could move.

"Mom, tell me he's not the man from the hotel."

Grant went still.

Lily whispered, "Dad?"

Ethan said, "If you two end this now, we can still be a normal family."

I dropped the cream-colored save-the-date card onto my dinner plate and stared at the date printed beneath the venue code.

Six weeks.

Not six months. Not next summer. Six weeks from tonight, my eighteen-year-old son intended to marry the girl he had dated since senior year.

"Ethan," I said, keeping my voice low because we were in the private dining room of one of my own event clients, "why is there a nonrefundable venue code on this card?"

He sat across from me in a navy blazer that still had the department-store crease in the sleeves. His father, Theo, occupied the chair beside him, looking pleased with himself. That alone told me he knew more than I did.

"Wait until Lily gets here," Ethan said. "We want to tell everyone together."

"Everyone" apparently meant the three of us, a bottle of champagne no one had opened, and the empty chairs on the other side of the table. I had spent more than a decade planning other people's celebrations. I knew what a rushed deposit looked like. I also knew what panic looked like, even when it wore a new suit and called itself love.

The dining-room door opened before I could ask another question.

Lily came in first, cheeks pink from the cold, one hand gripping a silver clutch. With the other, she pulled her father into the room.

The man walking toward our table wore the same silver tie clip I had seen outside Room 1816 three nights earlier.

My breath stopped.

The burn of ginger ale returned to my tongue. The low lights of the Mercer House bar. His hand at my waist as we laughed over a pianist missing the same note twice. The quiet elevator ride. The plastic keycard he had offered me outside his door.

And the way I had pressed it back into his palm because wanting something did not obligate me to take it.

"Mom, Dad," Ethan announced, standing so fast his chair scraped the floor, "this is Lily's father, Grant Mercer."

Of course he was Grant Mercer. Owner of Mercer House Hotels, donor to half the city's arts programs, and apparently the father of the girl my son planned to marry before freshman orientation.

Grant stopped at the edge of the table. Recognition flashed in his dark eyes, hot and unmistakable, then vanished behind the composed expression he probably used during hostile board meetings.

He extended his hand.

"Rebecca," he said. "It's good to meet you."

The lie was technically polite. That made it worse.

I took his hand. His grip was warm and controlled, nothing like the way his fingertips had rested against the back of my neck when he had asked whether I was certain I wanted to leave. Even now, the memory of that touch traveled down my spine.

"Grant," I managed.

Theo noticed. Theo always noticed the exact second I became vulnerable.

His gaze moved from my face to Grant's tie clip, then back again. "Have you two met?"

"Briefly," Grant said.

"At a hotel bar," I added, because I would rather name the truth than let Theo invent it.

Ethan's smile faltered. Lily looked between us. "Which hotel?"

Grant and I answered at the same time.

"Mercer House."

Silence settled over the table.

A server entered carrying a chilled bottle and four champagne flutes. She took one look at our faces and set the tray down without offering to pour. The door closed softly behind her.

Ethan recovered first. He reached for Lily's hand and pulled her to the two empty chairs. "This isn't about our parents. Tonight is about us."

Lily opened her clutch and removed a folded receipt. She smoothed it across the linen tablecloth.

"We paid twenty-four hundred dollars for the lake pavilion," she said. "It's nonrefundable."

My eyes tracked the signature line. Theo Vale appeared under Financial Guarantor.

"You paid?" I asked him.

Theo lifted one shoulder. "I secured the date. Young couples need support, not interrogation."

"Young couples also need a budget, housing, health insurance, and enough time to understand a contract before somebody signs it for them."

Ethan's jaw tightened. "We have a plan."

"What plan? You start college in August. Lily does too. You haven't even received your final housing assignments."

"We found an apartment off campus," Lily said quickly. "The lease begins next month."

That explained the rush, but not the reason beneath it. Ethan had spent years moving between my house and Theo's condo every Sunday night, carrying the same battered duffel bag. A place of his own had always been his fantasy. I just had not realized he might try to buy it with a marriage license.

"An apartment is not a reason to get married," I said.

"Love is," Ethan shot back.

"Love is a reason to build carefully. It is not a deadline."

Theo leaned back and folded his arms. "There it is. Rebecca cannot tolerate a decision she did not control."

I ignored him. "Who reviewed the venue agreement?"

"Dad did," Ethan said.

"And the lease?"

A pause.

"Dad did."

I looked at Theo. Satisfaction flickered at the corner of his mouth. He had wrapped the wedding, the apartment, and probably half of Ethan's freshman year into a package only he could authorize.

Grant picked up the receipt and studied it. "The pavilion date is aggressive," he said to Lily. "Why six weeks?"

She stiffened. "I thought you would be happy."

"I am happy you found someone you love. That is different from approving a schedule I learned about over dinner."

Relief loosened something in my chest. At least one other adult in the room understood that concern was not sabotage.

Then Lily noticed the way I looked at him.

Her eyes narrowed. "How brief was this meeting at the hotel?"

Ethan turned to me. "Mom?"

Theo reached for the champagne bottle, though no one had asked him to open it. "Yes, Rebecca. Tell the children how well you know Mr. Mercer."

"We had two drinks," I said. "We talked. Nothing happened."

Grant's gaze held mine. "Nothing we acted on."

That distinction landed like a lit match.

Lily went pale. Ethan stared at Grant, then at me, as if a private attraction between two single adults had somehow rewritten his engagement.

"You wanted something to happen," he said.

I could have lied. Theo was waiting for it. Lily was silently begging for it. Grant gave me no rescue, no excuse, only the space to choose my own answer.

"Yes," I said. "I did."

Ethan pulled the velvet ring box from his pocket and set it beside the venue receipt. His palm came down hard over the lid.

"Then choose, Mom," he said. "Him or my wedding."
