Chapter 3

Nine days after the press conference, the phone didn’t ring.

My mother called every Sunday morning at eight o’clock. She had done it for fifteen years. Without fail.

At eight-fifteen, I dialed her burner phone. It rang until the voicemail clicked on.

I called again. Ring. Ring. Nothing.

A cold wire tightened around my lungs. I grabbed my car keys, ran down the stairs of the Bennett estate, and sped through the gray Seattle drizzle.

Her apartment building was an old three-story brick walk-up. The street was quiet. Puddles mirrored the pale sky.

I slammed my car into park and leaped out onto the wet asphalt. I looked up toward the third-floor window.

My mother wasn’t in her window.

She was standing on the flat roof of the building.

Her thin gray cardigan fluttered in the freezing wind. Her white hair was wild. She looked tiny against the open sky. So frail. A single gust could blow her away.

"Mom!" I screamed, but the wind snatched my voice.

She didn't look down at me. She just stared out toward the city that had spent the last week calling her a monster.

Then, she stepped forward.

It was not a stumble. It was a calm, steady step off the ledge.

"Mom!"

I ran. My combat boots slammed hard against the street. My lungs burned with ice. Just like the warehouse. Five yards. Four yards. Three yards.

*I can catch her. I can save her.*

The sound hit before I reached the curb. A sickening, heavy crack against the concrete.

I skidded to a stop.

She lay on the sidewalk, five feet from my outstretched hands. Her limbs were bent at unnatural angles. Dark crimson seeped out across the gray pavement, mixing with the rainwater. Her eyes stared at the sky, blank and unblinking.

I dropped to my knees. The wet stone soaked into my jeans.

I was too late. I was always too late. I never reached anyone in time.

My mouth opened, but no sound came out. The scream inside my chest was not a human sound. It was something jagged and animal, tearing me apart from the inside, so I stayed completely silent. I took her cold, fragile hand and pressed it to my cheek.

Sirens started wailing in the distance. I didn't move. I didn't cry. My heart just turned to cold, dead ash.

Two weeks later, the Bennetts hosted their annual charity gala.

"You will be there," Archer had said that morning. He had stood in front of the mirror, adjusting his black silk bow tie. "The board needs to see stability. The press needs to see you standing beside me. We look forward, Keira. Not backward."

I didn't argue. I didn't have the energy to fight a dead man in a tailored suit.

I wore a plain black gown. I walked into the grand ballroom of the Grand Hyatt under the blinding glow of crystal chandeliers. Hundreds of Seattle’s elite mingled with champagne flutes in hand. String quartets played softly.

People stared at me. Some looked away with guilty pity. Others whispered behind their hands. *That’s her. The mother who failed. Her mother killed herself, you know.*

I moved through the crowd like a ghost. I occupied my body like a rented room. Nothing touched me. The chatter, the lights, the fake smiles—it was all white noise. Archer stood near the stage, laughing with city council members, the perfect picture of an untouchable heir.

"Keira."

A soft, sweet voice called my name.

I turned slowly.

Camryn stood before me. She wore an ivory silk gown that hugged her slender frame, radiating innocence and fragile beauty. She held a small glass of sparkling cider, looking at me with wide, sorrowful eyes.

"You look so pale, Keira," she murmured. Her voice carried just enough volume for a nearby senator's wife to hear. "I’ve been praying for you every single night. Losing little Corbin... and now your sweet mother. It’s too much for one person."

"Get away from me, Camryn," I said. My voice was a flatline.

Camryn didn't flinch. She stepped closer, closing the distance between us until she was inches away. To anyone watching from across the room, she looked like a loving sister-in-law leaning in to offer comfort.

She reached up with delicate fingers and tapped a necklace resting against her pale collarbone.

It was a teardrop-shaped crystal pendant. It had a strange, warm tint to it, cloudy and dense under the chandelier lights.

"Do you like my new pendant?" Camryn whispered.

Her soft, trembling tone was gone. Her voice was ice-cold.

"A custom jeweler on Fifth Avenue made it for me," she whispered directly into my ear, her lips curving into a tiny, razor-sharp smile. "It’s made from your mother's cremated remains, Keira. Pure bone ash, sealed inside crystal. I wanted to keep a piece of her close to my heart."

My breath stopped. Every drop of blood in my body turned to poison.

"You..." I choked out.

Camryn’s eyes glittered with cruel delight. She leaned in even closer, so close I could smell the expensive vanilla perfume on her skin.

"And do you know the best part?" she whispered, tapping the glass against her chest. "I commissioned it three weeks ago. Before the sweet old lady even jumped."
