My Husband Protected His Sister After She Killed Our Child Chapter 1

The call woke me at two in the morning.

"We have your son, Keira. Abandoned shipping warehouse, Pier 42. Come alone with your kit, or he burns."

My blood went completely cold. I didn't breathe. I threw on my tactical vest, grabbed my bomb disposal kit, and drove through the freezing Seattle rain like a madwoman. Corbin was only five years old. He was my whole life.

The warehouse stood at the edge of the dark water. Rain hammered the rusted metal roof. Inside, the air smelled like damp concrete, motor oil, and ozone.

Two emergency work lamps lit the cavernous room.

My heart slammed against my ribs.

At the far north pillar, my son Corbin was tied to a steel folding chair. His small legs dangled, shivering violently. Strapped to his chest was a brick of military-grade C4 with a glowing red digital readout.

At the south pillar, fifty yards away, sat another chair. Camryn Bennett, my husband Archer’s adopted sister, was strapped to an identical device. Her signature white dress was smudged with dust.

"Mommy!" Corbin sobbed, his tiny voice echoing in the rafters. "Mommy, it's ticking!"

"Stay still, baby!" I shouted, dropping to my knees to drop my case. "Don't move, Corbin! Mommy's right here!"

I forced my breathing to slow. In my line of work, panic meant death. I rubbed my thumb against my forefinger—a nervous reflex I had learned in the field—and zoomed in with my optics. Both timers read the same: *04:15*. Four minutes and fifteen seconds.

It was tight, but I was the best in the city. If I hit Corbin first, I could neutralize his firing pin in ninety seconds, then sprint to Camryn.

Heavy footsteps echoed behind me.

I turned, expecting the kidnapper. It was Archer.

My husband wore his tailored wool overcoat, completely dry. His jaw was set in stone.

"Archer!" I gasped in relief. "Corbin's on the north wall. Cover my rear. I'm going to our son—"

"You're defusing Camryn first," Archer said.

His voice was flat. Normal. As if we were discussing dinner reservations.

I froze. "What?"

"Save Camryn first, Keira."

"Corbin is five!" I shouted, tears stinging my eyes. "His heart rate could trigger the mercury switch! Camryn is an adult, she can hold still. I'll get Corbin, then I'll get her!"

"No." Archer stepped directly into my path. He pulled his silver cufflinks straight. "You save Camryn. Right now."

"He's your son, Archer! Are you out of your mind?"

"If you take one step toward Corbin," Archer whispered, leaning down, "I release the files on your mother."

The room spun. "What?"

"I have the fabricated fraud leaks ready for the press. One tap on my phone, and Myra's reputation is gone. Her school, her career, her pension. The press will tear her to pieces. She won’t survive the scandal. You know her heart."

"You're threatening my mother?" My voice cracked into a jagged shriek. "With our child's life on the line?"

"I am giving you an order," Archer said coldly. His dark eyes didn't waver. He didn't even glance toward our crying boy. "Choose."

*03:10.*

"Mommy!" Corbin wailed. "Mommy, help!"

My chest felt like it was tearing open. Every cell in my body screamed to run to my boy, to throw my arms around him. But Archer’s thumb hovered over his phone screen. He would destroy my mother without blinking.

"I hate you," I breathed.

Archer didn't blink. "Clock's ticking, Keira."

I turned and sprinted toward Camryn.

"Keira, please!" Camryn whimpered, tears streaming down her pale face. "I'm so scared!"

I didn't answer her. My hands shook as I pulled my wire cutters from my pouch. I forced my hands into iron stillness. Red bypass, yellow loop, blue ground. I clamped the blade over the blue ground wire.

*Snip.*

The timer on Camryn’s chest beeped once and died.

"Thank you, Keira," Camryn whispered softly. Her voice didn't sound scared anymore.

Then, a sharp *click* echoed from across the empty warehouse.

I snapped my head around.

Across the room, Corbin’s timer didn't have two minutes left. The digital readout flashed, glitched, and jumped instantly from *02:18* straight down to *00:04*.

It was rigged. Tampered. The circuit had been slave-wired to accelerate the moment Camryn's device died.

*00:03.*

"Corbin!" I screamed.

I dropped my tools. I ran. My combat boots slammed against the concrete.

*00:02.*

Corbin looked up at me with wide, tear-filled eyes. "Mommy—"

*00:01.*

"Corbin!"

I threw myself forward, hands outstretched, fingers reaching for him. I was five feet away. Just five feet.

The world vanished into blinding white fire.

The blast wave hit my chest like a speeding train. It threw me backward through the air. I slammed into the concrete floor, rolling through heat, dust, and flying gravel.

A deafening roar shattered my eardrums, followed by total silence.

A long, high-pitched ringing filled my head.

I coughed. Smoke filled my lungs. The air tasted like copper and scorched meat.

I pushed myself up on trembling arms.

Where the north pillar had been, there was only a black, smoking crater. The steel chair was twisted into scrap.

There was no Corbin. Nothing left. Only ash drifting through the yellow light.

"No," I tried to say, but no sound came out of my throat. "No, no, no."

Through the haze of smoke, two Bennett security guards ran in. They gently unstrapped Camryn from her chair. Camryn buried her face in a guard's shoulder, sobbing loudly for anyone watching.

Archer walked past them.

He didn't walk toward me. He didn't look at the black scorch mark where his only child had sat seconds ago.

He put his phone to his ear.

"The device detonated," Archer said into the receiver, his voice calm, smooth, and perfectly controlled. "Contact PR. Draft a statement about technician error during defusal. Control the narrative."

I crawled across the floor. My palms pressed against the burning, soot-covered concrete. I dragged myself toward the empty blast mark, clutching handfuls of warm dust against my chest.

Footsteps approached. Hands grabbed under my arms, hauling me up.

A paramedic with a Seattle Fire badge was shouting at me, his mouth moving, but I couldn't hear a word. The ringing in my ears was too loud. It swallowed the rain, the sirens, and the sound of my husband walking away.
