Chapter 4

My ears rang with her words. *Three weeks ago.* Before my mother died.

I couldn't move. My lungs felt packed with ice.

Camryn stepped back. Her right hand slipped down to her side, two fingers twitching in a tiny, practiced motion.

Near the floral arch stood a handler holding Duke, her sleek black Doberman. The dog lurched forward with a sudden snarl. The leash slipped from the handler’s grip. The heavy animal charged straight into the small marble pedestal beside the wall.

On top of the pedestal sat the ceramic urn. It held the rest of my mother’s ashes.

The urn hit the floor with a loud, sickening crack.

It shattered into dozens of pieces. A cloud of fine gray powder billowed into the air and settled across the polished black marble.

"Oh, no!" Camryn gasped loudly. She slapped both hands over her mouth in horror. "Duke! Heel! Oh god, Keira, I’m so sorry! He got startled by the lights!"

The entire ballroom went dead silent.

Dozens of guests turned around to stare. Women pulled their silk dresses back so the dust wouldn't touch their hems. Men whispered behind their champagne flutes.

I looked at Archer.

He stood ten feet away. His eyes met mine across the crowd. He looked down at the pile of bone ash on the floor, then looked back up at me. He reached down with one hand and straightened his silver cufflink.

He didn't move an inch. He didn't say a single word.

I fell to my knees.

The cold marble bit into my skin. The sharp edges of the broken urn dug into my palms.

I didn't cry. I unzipped my small black evening bag.

I leaned over and began scooping the gray dust with my bare hands. My fingers scraped against the hard floor, pushing my mother's remains into my palms, then into the silk lining of my bag. Bone fragments slid under my fingernails.

Around me, hundreds of people watched. Nobody moved. Nobody offered a napkin, or a broom, or a single hand to help me up. They just stared at me like I was a dirty mess in the middle of their perfect party.

I packed the bag until the zipper could barely close.

I wiped my gray, dusty palms on the sides of my black dress. Then I stood up.

I didn't look at Archer. I didn't look at Camryn.

I walked straight past them and slipped into the nearest restroom. I turned the lock until it clicked.

I sat down on the cold tiled floor with my back against the wooden door. I pulled my knees up to my chest and watched the clock on my phone screen.

One minute. Two minutes. Five minutes.

I sat there on the floor for eleven minutes. I didn't shed a single tear. My chest felt like an empty, hollow room. When the timer hit eleven minutes, I stood up, rinsed the gray dust from my hands in the sink, and walked out.

Four days later was the Bennett family Fourth of July celebration.

The private party took place on the sweeping back lawn of the Bennett estate, sloping down to the lake. The air smelled like roasting meat, lake water, and expensive cologne. Guests drank cocktails on the stone terrace while soft music drifted from the speakers.

I stayed near the edge of the lawn, far away from everyone. The smell of charcoal smoke made my stomach churn. It reminded me too much of Pier 42.

"Watch the shoreline!" someone called out near the boat dock. "We're starting the show!"

Camryn was standing near the fire pit, laughing with Archer’s business partners. She wore a cream linen dress and held a glass of white wine. She looked across the grass, caught my eye, and gave me a small, sweet smile.

A sharp, violent hiss cut through the air.

I whipped my head around.

Ten feet away, a commercial-grade mortar tube sat in the grass. It wasn't pointed toward the dark lake.

It was tilted directly toward me.

Ten years of bomb squad instincts screamed in my head. I saw the green sparks spitting from the cardboard cylinder.

*Run.*

I tried to throw myself sideways, but I was half a second too slow.

*BOOM.*

A blinding ball of white heat exploded inches from my face.

A wall of fire slammed into my eyes. The blast wave shattered my balance and threw me backward into the dirt. A high, piercing scream ripped out of my throat before everything dissolved into total blackness.

I woke up to the rhythmic beep of a hospital monitor.

The room smelled like rubbing alcohol and burnt skin. A dull, throbbing pain pulsed behind my forehead.

I opened my eyes.

I blinked once. Twice.

There was light, but something was terribly wrong.

The world had no color.

The privacy curtain beside my bed was a flat, dull gray. The yellow blanket on the foot of the bed looked like wet concrete. The plastic IV tube running into my arm was filled with fluid that looked like murky gray water.

I lifted my trembling hand. My skin was the color of chalk. The veins in my wrist were dark, muddy charcoal.

A doctor walked in, holding a metal clipboard. He looked down at me with heavy pity.

"Mrs. Bennett," he said quietly. "The thermal flash caused catastrophic trauma to your retinas. Your cone cells are completely dead. You have permanent achromatopsia."

"No," I croaked. My throat was raw.

Color was my eyes. Color was how I read wire diagrams, how I knew which lead to cut, how I kept myself and others alive. It was gone. All of it.

The door clicked open.

Camryn walked into the room, holding a vase of flowers. Her arm was tucked tightly through Archer’s.

"Keira," Camryn whimpered, her eyes shining with fake tears. "Oh, thank God. We were so worried. The fire marshal said the mortar tube had a cracked wooden base. Just a freak accident."

She set the vase on the bedside table. To me, the bright summer flowers looked like dead, gray paper.

Archer stood beside her. He looked at the burns on my cheeks, then looked down at his shoes. "The Bennett legal team handled the report, Keira. The vendor took full responsibility. Don't stress yourself. Just rest."

I didn't answer them. I turned my head away and stared at the flat, gray ceiling.

There was no rage left in me. There was only ice.

Camryn had killed my son. She had destroyed my mother. Now she had taken my sight, my career, and my entire reason to live.

And my husband had watched her do it.

I lay in the sterile gray bed and saw the truth with brutal clarity.

If I stayed here, they were going to kill me.
