Chapter 2

Three days after the explosion, my home smelled like burnt hair and cold rain. I couldn’t get the stench out of my nose. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Corbin’s red sneakers flying through the smoke.

Archer didn’t come to our bedroom. He stayed in his home office.

On the third afternoon, his assistant knocked on my door. "Mr. Bennett wants to see you."

I walked down the hall in my bare feet. Archer’s office was massive and clean. The glass desk had nothing on it except a sleek laptop and a single sheet of paper. Archer stood by the tall window, wearing a charcoal suit. He turned and adjusted his silver cufflinks.

"Sit down, Keira," he said.

I didn't sit. My arms were crossed tightly over my ribs. They ached from where the blast had thrown me into the wall. "What do you want, Archer?"

He slid the paper across the desk. "Read this. It’s for tomorrow morning."

I picked up the paper. It was a printed statement.

*I, Keira Webb, take full responsibility for the tragic event at Pier 42. Due to personal panic and professional negligence, I committed a fatal miscalculation during the defusal procedure. The Bennett family bears no fault. My son’s death was the result of technician error.*

My breath caught in my throat. My vision turned white around the edges.

"You want me to tell the world I killed our son?" My voice was barely a whisper. "You held my mother over my head. You made me save Camryn. You watched him blow up!"

"Camryn is a Bennett," Archer said calmly. He didn't look at me. "The market is watching us. If the press finds out I forced a choice, Bennett Industries loses fifty percent of its stock value overnight. The board won't survive it. We need a clean narrative."

"No," I said. I crumpled the paper in my fist. "I won't do it."

Archer didn't shout. He just turned the laptop screen toward me.

There were three draft emails open on the screen. The recipients were three major national news networks. Attached were fabricated bank records, fake audit reports, and forged signatures showing that my mother, Myra, had embezzled half a million dollars from her school district.

"One click," Archer said softly. "The stories drop in fifteen minutes. Your mother is fragile, Keira. Think about her heart. Think about how she'll handle federal fraud charges on the evening news."

My chest heaved. I ran my thumb hard against my index finger, digging my nail into the skin until it burned. He had planned this. He had built the cage before the fire even started.

"You're a monster," I said.

"I am protecting this family," he said.

I picked up a pen from his desk. I smoothed out the crumpled paper. My hands did not shake. When you defuse a bomb, you don't allow your hands to tremble.

I crossed out three sentences. I struck through the word *panic*.

"I'll do the press conference," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "But I will say it in my own words."

Archer glanced at the crossed-out lines. He gave a small, indifferent shrug. "The words don't matter, Keira. The ending is the same."

The next morning, the glare of the television lights burned my eyes.

Dozens of reporters sat in rows before me. Microphones crowded the small wooden podium. Archer stood off to the side, looking somber and handsome in black, playing the grieving father for the cameras. Camryn sat in a wheelchair nearby, wearing an ivory dress and dabbing at dry eyes with a handkerchief.

I leaned into the microphones. My voice was flat and hollow.

"Three days ago, I responded to an emergency call at Pier 42," I said. The room went dead silent. "Two devices were active. I made the final operational choice. I failed to neutralize the second device in time. My son, Corbin Bennett, died because of my failure. It was my error alone."

I stepped back from the microphones. I didn't wait for questions. The room exploded with shouts and blinding camera flashes.

Within two hours, the footage was everywhere.

It was clipped, edited, and posted across every social media platform. Commenters called me a cold-blooded butcher. They asked how a mother could be so incompetent. They made memes out of my face.

By evening, the internet mob moved past me. They dug up my family.

They found my mother’s address. They posted her home phone number, her former workplace, and her social security number in public forums. The death threats began pouring into her voicemail every two minutes. *Your daughter murdered a child. You raised a killer. Die.*

Someone threw a rock through her living room window that night.

I drove through the dark and packed two suitcases for her. I took her to a cheap, furnished apartment three neighborhoods away, under a fake lease. I took her old phone, snapped the SIM card in half, and handed her a burner.

"Mom, don't look at the internet," I begged, holding her thin, cold hands. "Don't turn on the television. Please. Just stay here. Let me handle it."

My mother looked so small on the unfamiliar sofa. Her skin was gray, paper-thin. She nodded slowly. "I won't, sweetie. I promise."

I stayed until she fell asleep. Before I left, I walked into the small kitchen.

On the table lay a large, faded leather scrapbook. It was open.

Inside were yellowed newspaper clippings from my ten years on the bomb squad. Headliners praised my skill. Pictures showed me in my heavy gear, smiling after saving hostages from a rigged building.

My mother had kept it open right under the kitchen light.

She was looking at the old papers, desperate to remember the hero I used to be, before my husband told the world I was a murderer.
