Chapter 2

"We saved you a slice," Matt said, pointing to the dining table.

A massive sheet cake dominated the center of our oak table. Pink frosting spelled out Congratulations Bella! across the surface. Shiny silver paper plates sat at three of the placemats. A plastic tiara rested next to a stack of napkins.

I tossed my keys into the ceramic bowl by the door. I set my hard-shell citizenship folder on the entryway cabinet, pushing it right against the wall so it wouldn't fall.

"The state committee bumped the time slot up by two hours," Matt announced, stepping out of the kitchen. He wiped his hands on a dish towel. "Vanessa couldn't handle the logistics alone. The other dance moms bailed on her. She was having a meltdown in the parking lot."

"And my oath ceremony?" I asked, leaving my coat on.

"You're a citizen now. We will have plenty of other milestones to celebrate," he said, waving a hand in the air. "It's just paperwork, Elena. Bella only had this one chance to nail her solo."

"Why didn't you tell me this morning?" I asked. "You watched me pack Ollie's earmuffs. You watched me iron your suit."

Matt folded his arms, his jaw tightening. "Because I didn't want to create a scene before school. I didn't want to make Ollie choose between us."

"You made the choice for him," I said.

"I managed a crisis," he shot back.

Ollie trotted into the dining room, still wearing his dinosaur backpack. He looked at the cake, then at me. He reached for the pastry, snapped off a yellow sugar star from the corner, and walked over to my spot by the door.

"Here," Ollie said, holding the star up to my chest. "You can celebrate a little too."

I looked down at his small hand. The sugar was already melting against his warm palm, leaving a sticky residue on his skin.

"I saved two chairs for you today," I told my son, keeping my voice quiet. "They stayed empty the whole time."

Ollie lowered his arm. He looked at the floor, then back up at me. "Your ceremony isn't a competition. You're already my Mommy."

Matt wedged himself between us immediately.

"He's seven," Matt snapped, his tone sharp. "Do not put adult emotions on a child."

"I am telling him a fact," I said.

"You are guilting him," Matt argued, stepping closer. "Are you really going to make him feel bad for supporting a friend today? He had fun. He helped Bella calm down. Stop trying to ruin a good day because your feelings are hurt."

"Okay," I said.

I didn't yell. I didn't demand an explanation. I simply turned around, picked up my certificate from the cabinet, and walked down the hall to our master bedroom.

I crouched in front of the closet and spun the dial on our shared floor safe. The heavy metal door swung open, revealing the life we built together. His velvet watch boxes sat on the top shelf. Our joint tax returns filled the middle. I ignored them all. I reached past the jewelry and grabbed my passport, my original birth certificate, and my real estate appraisal licenses. I slid them all into a plain manila envelope.

Next, I pulled my laptop from my tote bag and sat on the edge of the mattress. I logged into the Carter Renovation client portal. For five years, I operated as the unpaid Spanish liaison for his contracting business. I translated zoning permits, smoothed over client disputes, and managed all international supplier calls.

I navigated to the administrator tab. I found my profile. I hit deactivate.

A confirmation pop-up appeared on the screen. Are you sure you want to revoke all access?

I clicked yes.

Heavy footsteps pounded down the carpeted hallway. Matt appeared in the doorway, holding his phone up.

"What is this?" he demanded, pointing at his screen. "I just got an alert that you locked yourself out of the system."

"I did," I said, shutting the screen.

"Who is going to explain the contract to the Garcia family tomorrow morning?" he asked, his voice rising. "The closing is at nine. They don't speak English."

"You can hire an interpreter," I said.

Matt lowered his phone, staring at me as if I had spoken a foreign language. "Are you serious right now?"

"Very," I said.

"You know how important the Garcia account is," Matt shouted. "It's our biggest remodel this quarter. I don't have time to vet a contractor by tomorrow morning!"

"Find a service online," I said. "They charge fifty dollars an hour."

"You're punishing my business because you're upset about a party?" he asked, shaking his head.

"I am no longer working for free," I said.

I snatched the manila envelope and my laptop. I walked past him, heading straight for the guest room at the end of the hall.

Once inside, I set my things on the small desk. I opened the email from the family lawyer and printed the temporary separation checklist using the wireless printer on the bookshelf. The machine whirred, spitting out two crisp pages.

I grabbed a red pen and crossed off three items: separate finances, secure vital documents, and end unpaid business work.

I opened a new tab on my browser. I searched for apartment rentals. I found a two-bedroom unit twelve minutes away from Ollie's elementary school. The listing showed a small kitchen with outdated appliances and a narrow balcony overlooking a parking lot. It wasn't the sprawling suburban house I currently lived in, but it had a secure lease and a landlord who didn't know my husband. I typed in my private email address and booked a viewing for tomorrow afternoon at three.

"Elena," Matt called out from the hallway. He didn't enter the room. He stood just outside the frame, leaning against the drywall. "You are escalating a scheduling conflict into a marriage crisis. You need to calm down and think about what you are doing."

I crossed the room. I grabbed the brass handle.

"I am thinking clearly," I said.

I shut the door, twisting the lock until it clicked.

Silence settled over the house. I sat on the edge of the twin bed, staring at the printed checklist. I didn't cry. The tears from the convention center bathroom were the last ones I planned to shed over this marriage.

Ten minutes passed.

A soft knock tapped against the bottom panel of the door.

"Mommy?" Ollie asked, his voice muffled through the wood.

I stayed seated. "Yes, Ollie."

"Will you help me with my heritage worksheet tomorrow?" he asked. "We have to draw our family tree."

Every night for the past four years, I helped him with his homework. I fixed his spelling mistakes. I colored inside the lines when his hands got tired. I always said yes.

I looked at the red ink on the separation checklist.

"Tomorrow is Daddy's night," I said, keeping my voice steady. "You can ask him."

Ollie didn't reply.

A piece of paper slid under the gap of the door, stopping right at the tip of my shoe.
