Ex-Boyfriend's Cruel Betrayal
Ex-Boyfriend's Cruel Betrayal Chapter 1
The fluorescent lights in the company break room hummed overhead, casting harsh shadows across the worn linoleum floor. I clutched my coffee cup tighter, the ceramic warm against my palms as I watched Jasper pace near the vending machines. His usually gentle demeanor had vanished, replaced by something cold and unfamiliar that made my stomach clench with dread.
"We need to talk," he said without looking at me, his voice carrying an edge I'd never heard before.
I set down my cup, the small clink echoing in the empty room. "What's wrong? You've been distant all week—"
"Cut the act, Sarai." He finally turned to face me, his brown eyes hard as stone. "I know what you're really after."
Confusion washed over me like ice water. "What are you talking about?"
Jasper's laugh was bitter, devoid of any warmth. "The innocent routine is getting old. Did you really think I wouldn't figure it out? The way you always suggest expensive restaurants, how you 'forget' your wallet, the hints about wanting nicer things."
My heart began to race. "Jasper, I don't understand—"
"You're a gold digger, Sarai. Plain and simple." The words hit me like physical blows. "You saw a guy with a decent job and thought you'd found your meal ticket. Well, congratulations—you almost had me fooled."
The room seemed to tilt around me. I gripped the edge of the table, my knuckles white. "That's not—I would never—"
"Save it." He held up a hand, his face twisted with disgust. "I should have seen the signs earlier. The way you cling to me at company events, always trying to make yourself look important. You're just another user, aren't you?"
Tears stung my eyes, but I blinked them back. If only he knew the truth—that I earned more in dividends each month than his annual salary, that I chose simple coffee dates because I wanted to be loved for who I was, not what I had. But the agreement with my father bound me to silence, and now that silence was destroying everything.
"Please, just listen to me," I whispered, my voice breaking. "You don't understand—"
"I understand perfectly." Jasper's tone grew colder, more final. "This is over, Sarai. Find someone else to leech off of."
He turned on his heel and strode toward the door, leaving me standing there with my world crumbling around me. The fluorescent lights buzzed louder, or maybe it was just the ringing in my ears as I watched the man I thought I loved walk away without a backward glance.
---
The next morning arrived gray and drizzling, matching the storm clouds that had settled over my heart. I'd barely slept, replaying Jasper's cruel words over and over, searching for some explanation that made sense. My simple intern's clothing felt heavier as I walked through the parking garage, each step echoing off the concrete walls.
That's when I saw them.
Jasper had Lydia pressed against his car, their bodies intertwined in a passionate embrace. Her manicured fingers tangled in his hair while his hands roamed her back with a familiarity that spoke of more than a single night. The sight hit me like a physical blow, stealing the breath from my lungs.
Lydia's eyes opened mid-kiss, finding mine across the dim garage. A slow, triumphant smile spread across her lips even as she continued kissing my ex-boyfriend. Her gaze held mine deliberately, possessively, as if claiming not just Jasper but victory itself.
I stood frozen, watching this intimate scene that felt designed to humiliate me. Jasper remained oblivious, lost in his passion for my supervisor, while Lydia's eyes never left mine. The message was crystal clear—she had won, and she wanted me to know it.
Finally, I forced my feet to move, hurrying toward the elevator before they could see the tears threatening to spill. Behind me, I heard Lydia's soft laughter, the sound following me like a ghost.
---
The team meeting that afternoon felt like walking into a den of wolves. I took my usual seat near the back, trying to blend into the background as colleagues filed in around the conference table. The familiar scent of coffee and copy paper did nothing to calm my nerves.
Lydia entered with Jasper at her side, both of them glowing with the satisfaction of new lovers. She wore a fitted red dress that commanded attention, her blonde hair perfectly styled, every inch the successful supervisor. Jasper looked different too—more confident, as if aligning himself with her had elevated his status.
"Before we begin," Lydia announced, her voice carrying easily across the room, "I have some personal news to share." Her smile was radiant as she slipped her hand into Jasper's. "Jasper and I are officially together."
Murmurs of congratulations rippled through the room. I kept my eyes fixed on my notebook, my pen trembling slightly in my grip.
"Thank you all," Jasper said, his voice warm in a way it hadn't been with me in weeks. "Lydia and I are very happy."
Lydia's gaze found mine across the table. "Now, let's discuss project assignments. Sarai, I'll need you to handle the filing backlog and coffee runs for the rest of the week. I think tasks suited to your... skill level... would be most appropriate."
The subtle dig landed perfectly, drawing a few uncomfortable glances. My cheeks burned as I nodded, not trusting my voice.
"After all," Lydia continued, her tone saccharine, "it's important that people don't overestimate their worth in this company. Wouldn't you agree, Sarai?"
The room fell silent, tension crackling like electricity. I lifted my chin, meeting her challenging stare with as much dignity as I could muster.
"Of course," I replied quietly. "I understand my position perfectly."
But as I spoke those words, something shifted inside me. The hurt and humiliation began to crystallize into something harder, more determined. Lydia might think she had won, but she had no idea who she was really dealing with.
The meeting continued around me, but my mind was elsewhere, calculating, planning. The game had changed, and it was time I started playing by different rules.
