Chapter 3

"Sign on the bottom line, and the keys are yours," the property manager said, sliding a silver pen across the laminate desk.

I pressed the tip against the paper and signed my name. The two-bedroom apartment was exactly twelve minutes from Ollie's elementary school and seven minutes from the Harbor Bridge community center. It lacked a backyard and a covered garage, but the heavy brass deadbolt on the front door belonged entirely to me.

Stepping out into the humid afternoon air, I pulled up my messages. I forwarded the new address to my lawyer. Then, I attached the temporary parenting plan PDF to a new message and sent it to my husband.

"I am moving out this weekend," I typed. "The schedule for Ollie is attached."

My screen flashed with an incoming call before I even reached my car.

"You are abandoning your family over a dance recital?" Matt demanded the second I answered.

"I am securing a stable environment," I said, unlocking my car door.

"He is seven years old," Matt snapped, his voice echoing slightly, likely pacing his office. "He needs his routine, Elena. You packing up and leaving is going to wreck him."

"Read the document, Matt. We share school and medical information. We are responsible for our own parenting blocks. You can call me for health emergencies."

"I read the words 'moving out'," he shot back.

"Then open the attachment and read the rest," I said.

I ended the call and tossed the phone onto the passenger seat.

By the time I returned to the house, the afternoon sun cast long shadows across the hardwood floors. I dragged my hard-shell suitcase onto the bedroom rug. I didn't touch the joint photo albums on the bookshelf. I ignored the expensive down comforter we bought for our anniversary. Instead, I packed my clothes, my dual-monitor setup, the original bilingual contract templates I designed, and the wooden document box my mother left me.

I left Ollie's asthma inhaler on Matt's nightstand, placing a freshly printed copy of his dosage instructions right beside the plastic tube.

Footsteps scuffed against the hallway runner.

Ollie stood in the doorway, his dinosaur backpack sliding off one shoulder. He stared at the half-empty closet, his eyes wide and tracking the missing spaces where my dresses used to hang.

"Are you going to Aunt Sarah's house?" he asked, his voice small.

"No, sweetie," I said, crouching down to his eye level. "I signed a lease for a new apartment today."

His eyes darted from the empty hangers to my suitcase. "Can I come with you and bring all your stuff back tomorrow?"

"Both of our homes can be safe places," I told him, keeping my gaze steady on his. "But I won't pretend yesterday didn't happen just because the change is scary."

Ollie twisted the canvas strap of his backpack. "Daddy said if I was better at the ceremony, you wouldn't be mad."

My chest tightened, a sharp spike of anger flaring at Matt's manipulation. I reached out and gently held my son's hands, stopping his nervous fidgeting.

"You do not have to fix this," I said firmly. "You are never responsible for fixing a marriage. And you never have to keep secrets for adults when those secrets hurt someone else. Do you understand?"

He nodded slowly, though his shoulders remained rigid.

Dinner that evening felt like a bizarre stage play. Matt acted as if the suitcase sitting in the hallway did not exist. He scooped mashed potatoes onto his plate and pointed his fork across the table.

"You will hate the commute from that side of town," Matt said, chewing a piece of steak. "Give it three days. You will realize how inconvenient this is."

I didn't answer. My phone buzzed next to my water glass.

Matt tapped his own screen. "I just forwarded you the meeting link for the Alvarez account next Tuesday. It only needs twenty minutes of your time. Just run through the permit approvals."

I opened the email. For five years, I would have immediately added the appointment to my calendar and started prepping the translation notes. Tonight, I hit reply.

"I have resigned from all unpaid administrative work," I typed. "If Carter Renovation requires commercial interpretation services, please submit a quote request to my official business email."

I hit send and set the phone face down on the oak table.

Matt's phone chimed. He glanced at the screen, his face flushing a deep, angry red. He opened his mouth to speak, then snapped his jaw shut, stabbing his fork into his remaining food.

Later that night, sitting on the edge of the guest bed, I checked my voicemail.

"Elena?" The voice belonged to Mr. Garcia, the Spanish-speaking client ready to sign a massive kitchen remodel. "I tried calling the office, but no one can explain the warranty terms to me in Spanish. Where are you?"

I didn't offer to translate. I didn't try to poach his business for spite. I texted Mr. Garcia the link to the state's public interpreter directory. Then, I opened my portal settings and took a screenshot of the exact timestamp showing when I revoked my access to Matt's company, saving the image directly to my legal folder.

Saturday morning arrived with heavy, gray skies. I carried my last cardboard box to the front door, the packing tape crinkling in the quiet house.

Ollie stood in the entryway. He held a piece of construction paper—a crayon drawing of the American flag he started coloring last week, still missing its frame.

I reached out, expecting him to hand it to me.

He pulled his arms back, pressing the paper flat against his chest.

"Will you come back on Monday to wake me up?" he asked, staring intently at the toes of my sneakers.

"Monday is Daddy's time to take you to school," I said, keeping my tone even and reassuring. "I will pick you up from the car line on Wednesday."

I leaned down and kissed the top of his head. He smelled like maple syrup and the lavender shampoo I bought last month.

I stood up, grabbed my box, and walked out the front door. I closed the trunk of my car, turning my back on the two-story house we spent ten years renovating.

I got into the driver's seat and put the car in drive.

I was less than five minutes down the street when my phone lit up in the cup holder. I pulled up to a red light and glanced at the screen.

A text from Matt glared in bright white letters.

"Garcia postponed the signing because you didn't answer his call. You are destroying my business."

I took a screenshot of his message.

I opened my active thread with the family lawyer and attached the image of Matt's accusation.

"Add this to the financial-coercion record," I typed, pressing send.

My lawyer replied before the light changed: "Saved. Do not engage. If he turns a business loss into a parenting dispute, I want this before the judge." I drove toward my new address. Monday would be the first day Matt had to manage his company and our son without me.
