His Unwanted Wife, The Hidden Genius Architect Chapter 1

Sienna Ashford POV:

I watched the reflection of my husband in the polished glass of the storefront. He wasn't looking at me. He never was.

My fingers, still and perfectly manicured, rested on the cool surface of the display case. Inside, a set of architectural drafting tools lay on a bed of black velvet. A Koh-i-Noor rapidograph set. The weight of it, the precision—I could almost feel it in my hand. An ache, dull and familiar, settled in my chest. It was the ghost of a life I'd packed away in a box three years ago.

"Sienna, a choice. We don't have all day."

Ethan's voice cut through my thoughts, sharp and devoid of warmth. It was the same tone he used with his subordinates, the one that brokered billion-dollar deals and terrified boardrooms. He glanced at his Patek Philippe, the impatience radiating from him like a cold front.

Before I could answer, a softer hand landed on his arm. Mia. Of course.

"Ethan, don't rush Sienna," she cooed, her voice a gentle balm he never seemed to have for me. "It's a big day for the mall opening. We should enjoy it."

His posture eased. Just like that. He patted her hand, a small, possessive gesture that felt like a physical blow. The three of us. The CEO, his wife, and the daughter of his mother's savior. A perfectly imbalanced triangle of obligation and neglect.

I pulled my hand from the glass, my reflection wavering. "I don't need anything," I said, my voice as smooth and empty as I could make it. "We can go."

I had perfected this. The art of being invisible, of wanting nothing, of taking up no space.

As I turned, a tremor ran through the marble floor beneath my feet. Not the subtle hum of a subway passing deep below, but a violent, unnatural shudder.

The lights in the sprawling atrium of "The Apex" flickered wildly. A crystal from a massive chandelier overhead detached, spiraling down like a teardrop of light before shattering on the floor.

Then came the screams.

Panic erupted. The well-dressed crowd devolved into a stampede of raw terror. People shoved, their faces masks of primal fear. The air filled with the shriek of twisting metal and the groaning of a structure in its death throes.

I saw it happen in slow motion. A huge section of the decorative ceiling, a monstrous slab of plaster and steel, broke free. It wasn't falling toward me. It was falling toward Mia.

She let out a short, sharp scream, her legs giving out as she crumpled to the ground.

Ethan's head snapped in her direction. His pupils shrank to pinpoints. And then he screamed a name, a raw, instinctual sound torn from the depths of his soul.

"Mia!"

He didn't look at me. Not even a glance to see if his wife, the woman standing right beside him, was safe. He just moved, a blur of expensive wool and pure desperation, launching himself toward her.

The moment he left my side, a deafening crack echoed from the support pillar just a few feet away. The sound was like a bone snapping.

Someone slammed into my shoulder, hard. The world tilted, a nauseating swirl of flashing lights and screaming faces. I hit the floor, my head striking the marble with a sickening thud.

My vision swam. Through the chaos, I looked up.

The ceiling above me was splintering. A web of cracks spread across the concrete, and a tangle of steel rebar became visible, like the exposed ribs of a dying beast. It was coming down.

A wave of agony shot through my leg as a precast concrete panel slammed down, pinning me. The pain was white-hot, absolute. My consciousness began to fray at the edges, the world dissolving into a haze of dust and agony.

Through the deafening roar, one sound pierced the chaos. Ethan's voice. The voice that had been my only solace for three hollow years.

He was shouting, desperate and terrified.

"Mia! Where are you?! Answer me!"

Not Sienna.

It was never, ever Sienna.

A laugh, bitter and choked with dust, escaped my lips. Blood filled my mouth, coppery and thick. I couldn't breathe.

My life was draining out of me onto the dirty floor of a shopping mall. But a primal need to live, to survive, surged through me. I had to call for help. I had to make a sound.

I opened my mouth, but only a pathetic whimper came out, swallowed whole by the thunder of the collapsing world.

The dust settled for a brief, horrifying moment. Through a gap in the rubble, I saw him. Ethan. He was a few yards away, frantically clawing at the debris around where Mia had fallen.

Hope, that stupid, stubborn thing, flared in my chest. He was here. He would see me.

With a surge of adrenaline that defied the pain, I pushed my right hand out from under the slab that trapped me. My fingers, bloody and mangled, stretched into the dusty air.

"Ethan…" The name was a wisp of air, a prayer.

He must have sensed something. He paused, his body tensed, and he glanced in my direction.

His eyes, the color of a stormy sea, swept over the pile of rubble that hid my body. They were wide with panic, searching, desperate.

But they didn't see me. They passed right over me, looking for the only thing that mattered.

Then he found her. A cry of pure, unadulterated relief escaped his lips as he saw Mia, relatively unharmed, a few feet away. He scrambled to her, pulling her into his arms with a fierce, protective joy.

My outstretched hand froze. The tips of my fingers, coated in grime and despair, trembled in the empty air.

I watched him lift her, cradling her as if she were made of glass. I watched him turn and run, carrying her away from the danger, toward the distant promise of light.

He ran right past the wreckage that entombed me.

He didn't even look back.

My hand fell, limp, to my side. And my world, which had been slowly crumbling for three years, finally, completely, collapsed.
