His Captive Bride's Fight For Freedom Chapter 1

The cheap polyester of the uniform chafed her skin. Cailin Hunter stacked the last dirty plate, the clatter echoing the ache in her feet. Her worn-out shoes, a size too small, had rubbed her heels raw over the twelve-hour shift.

Her manager, a man with a perpetually sour expression, shoved a thin envelope of cash into her hand.

"One last thing," he said, his voice clipped. "A guest in the presidential suite left this. It needs to be returned. Personally."

He held out a silk scarf, its fabric shimmering under the harsh fluorescent lights of the Waldorf Astoria's backstage. It felt impossibly expensive in her tired hands.

"The guest is important. Make sure you hand it to them directly. That's how you get the rest of your tip."

The thought of that tip was the only thing that moved her legs. It meant she could pay her share of the rent without dipping into her meager savings for tuition.

Cailin dragged her exhausted body to the staff elevator. The ride to the top floor was silent. The hallway, lined with thick, plush carpet, swallowed the sound of her footsteps. It was an unnerving quiet, the kind that screamed of money and power.

She found the suite. The door was slightly ajar.

Inside, it was pitch black, save for the faint glow of the city filtering through a massive window. She hesitated. She wanted to turn around and leave, forget the tip, forget her manager. But the ache in her feet and the thin envelope in her pocket reminded her at the same time — she couldn't afford to be willful. She was so tired. She just wanted to go home.

She knocked softly.

No answer.

Remembering the manager's words and the promise of the tip, she pushed the door open a little wider. Maybe they were in the bathroom. She could just leave the scarf on the console table in the entryway.

The heavy door clicked shut behind her.

Her heart leaped into her throat. A bad feeling crept up from the base of her spine, but she told herself: don't scare yourself. Drop the thing off, leave, three minutes. She turned, fumbling for the handle, but it was a sleek, electronic lock system she didn't recognize. It wouldn't budge.

A sound cut through the darkness. A low, guttural groan, like a beast in pain.

Every hair on her body stood on end. There was something in that sound that made her want to step back, but her feet were frozen in place.

Her eyes adjusted, and she saw him. A tall, broad silhouette slumped against a sofa, his body coiled tight with tension. He seemed to be in agony.

Graham Shepherd felt like he was on fire. His fiancée Blair Sterling had drugged his drink. His consciousness frayed at the edges, every sense warped and amplified.

He heard the soft click of the door, the whisper of footsteps. A foreign scent invaded his space, igniting the inferno inside him.

Cailin's instinct screamed at her to run, but fear had turned her legs to lead.

"Sir?" she said, her voice tight but trying to stay polite. "I was just dropping something off. I'll leave right now." She told herself in her head: don't panic, step back, close the door, run. But her feet were nailed to the floor.

Her voice was a feather, stroking the raw, taut nerves of his skin. He surged to his feet, his immense frame instantly filling the room, radiating a suffocating pressure.

Cailin's breath caught in her throat. She stumbled backward instinctively, tripping over the edge of the rug and falling hard. Her elbow hit the floor with a dull thud, sending a shock of pain up her arm, but she barely registered it.

In two long strides, he was over her, his hot breath washing over her face.

She smelled the sharp scent of whiskey on him, mixed with something else—clean, masculine, and utterly dangerous. Her brain was screaming "run," but her body was frozen solid.

She shoved her hands against his chest. It was like pushing against a wall of stone.

The moment her skin made contact with his, Graham's entire body went rigid. For decades, any human touch had been a trigger for a wave of physiological revulsion, a violent nausea that churned in his gut.

But this time, there was nothing.

No sickness. Only a deeper, more violent urge to pull her closer.

In the dim light, Cailin saw his gray eyes flash with a flicker of confusion before being consumed by a terrifying, dark hunger. She didn't know what he saw, but there was something in those eyes that sent a chill down her spine — as if he had just recognized her, as if she was prey.

He seized her wrist, his grip like a manacle. A cry of pain escaped her lips.

His other hand came up, his fingers brushing against her cheek. At the touch of her skin, the heat raging through his veins seemed to find its only release valve. A low sigh of satisfaction rumbled in his chest.

Cailin was so stunned by his bizarre reaction that she forgot to struggle. Her mind was buzzing. He wasn't normal. This man wasn't normal. That look, that sigh — it was nothing like a drunk man losing control.

He knew. This woman... she was different. She was the only one who didn't make him sick.

The realization brought a sliver of clarity to his drug-addled mind, but it was immediately swallowed by a possessive, primal need.

He had to have her. Now.

He lowered his head, ignoring her terrified pleas, and crushed his mouth to hers.

It was a brutal, predatory kiss, devoid of any tenderness.

Tears of humiliation and fear streamed down Cailin's face. She tasted the salt of her own tears, and the whiskey on his lips. Nausea churned in her stomach, but her throat was blocked — she couldn't make a sound.

She fought, her nails digging into the hard muscle of his arm, drawing blood.

The pain only seemed to fuel him. His movements grew rougher. He hooked a hand in the collar of her cheap uniform.

The sound of tearing fabric echoed in the dead-silent room. That sound hit her like ice water. She realized in that instant that crying and struggling were only feeding him. She had to stop. She had to think of something else, or she wasn't getting out of this room tonight.
