The familiar scent of recycled air filled my lungs as I stepped off the plane at LAX, my fingers tightly gripping the handle of my carry-on. Inside that unassuming case lay eight years of my life's work—experimental anti-cancer data that could potentially save thousands of lives. The biometric lock hummed softly against my thumb as I verified its security for the third time since landing. Eight years. The same amount of time I'd spent loving Marcus from across the country. My stomach fluttered with anticipation as I navigated through the terminal. Today marked the end of our long-distance relationship and the beginning of our future together at Cedars-Sinai. Heiress Unleashes Vengeance Chapter 1

"Dr. Chen, please proceed to customs lane four," a voice announced overhead.

I adjusted my glasses, mentally rehearsing the presentation I would give tomorrow. The Project Alpha data represented a breakthrough in targeted cancer therapy—the culmination of countless sleepless nights and sacrifices. Sacrifices that had been worth it, I reminded myself. Both the research and my relationship with Marcus had been built on genuine passion and shared values, not the hollow connections that had surrounded me in my family's world.

After clearing customs, I checked my watch and made my way to the shuttle pickup zone. The driver smiled as he verified my pre-booked reservation.

"Dr. Chen? Your shuttle is ready. May I take your luggage?"

"I'll keep this with me," I said, nodding to my carry-on. "But thank you."

I settled into a quiet corner of the waiting area and pulled out my iPhone, quickly connecting a video call to Lena Petrova, my most trusted research assistant.

"Sophia!" Lena's face appeared on screen, her sharp eyes immediately focusing on the case beside me. "You made it. How was the flight?"

"Uneventful, thankfully. We're still on schedule for the data transfer at four." I lowered my voice. "Professor Martinez should be landing in about an hour."

"Perfect. The team is ready whenever—"

A commotion erupted near the shuttle entrance. A woman's voice, sharp and imperious, cut through the ambient terminal noise.

"I don't care who was here first! Do you have any idea who I am?"

I glanced up to see a stunning blonde in designer clothing storming toward the shuttle driver who had just checked me in. Her face was contorted with entitlement as she shoved past waiting passengers.

"I'll call you back, Lena," I murmured, ending the call and rising to my feet.

The blonde woman was now jabbing a manicured finger into the driver's chest. "The Sterling family doesn't wait for airport shuttles. We take them."

"Ma'am, I understand, but this shuttle has been reserved for—"

"I don't care! Move it now or I'll have your job!"

I approached cautiously, the case clutched protectively against my side. "Excuse me, I believe there's been a misunderstanding. This shuttle was pre-booked for medical transport."

The woman whirled toward me, her eyes narrowing as they swept over my simple blouse and slacks. "And who exactly are you?"

"Dr. Sophia Chen. I'm transporting critical medical research that needs to reach—"

"Oh please," she scoffed, her gaze hardening. "Some grad student with a science project doesn't take priority over me. I'm Victoria Sterling."

She spoke her name as though it should immediately end all discussion. When I didn't react with appropriate awe, her nostrils flared.

"I'm not a grad student, and this isn't a science project," I explained calmly. "This is experimental cancer treatment data that—"

Before I could finish, Victoria lunged forward and snatched my iPhone from my hand.

"Maybe you need to learn some respect," she hissed, and then deliberately dropped my phone to the ground, grinding her heel into the screen with a sickening crack.

I stared in disbelief at my shattered phone, the shock momentarily paralyzing me. Then I heard a familiar voice—one that had once been my comfort, my future.

"Victoria, darling, there you are."

My head snapped up as Marcus Wellington strode confidently toward us. My heart leapt—until he walked straight past me and wrapped his arm possessively around Victoria's waist.

"Marcus?" My voice came out as barely a whisper.

He turned, his eyes meeting mine with cool detachment before recognition flickered across his face. Not the warm recognition of a lover reuniting after months apart, but the awkward acknowledgment of an inconvenient past.

"Sophia," he said flatly. Then, with deliberate cruelty, he pulled Victoria closer and kissed her deeply, right in front of me.

When they broke apart, Victoria smirked triumphantly. Marcus cleared his throat and addressed the small crowd that had gathered.

"I should probably mention—Victoria and I are engaged to be married next month."

Eight years of my life collapsed around me in an instant as he dismissed our relationship with a casual wave of his hand.

"Sophia and I had a little... graduate-school fling. Ancient history now."

I stared at the financial records spread across my kitchen table, my fingers trembling as I traced the columns of numbers. Three years. Three years since I'd forgiven Oliver for his affair with that rogue she-wolf, Summer Wilson. Three years of rebuilding our mate bond, of raising our daughter Hope, of believing we'd moved past his betrayal. And now this. "Large withdrawals," I whispered, circling the figures with my pen. "Every month for... two years." The amounts were substantial—more than what we spent on pack supplies. More than what we allocated for Hope's education. The destination was always listed as "security expenses," but the pattern was too regular, too consistent.
