He Took My Fortune, I Took His Future Chapter 1

The phone vibrated against the marble kitchen counter, shattering the quiet afternoon.

I wiped soapy water from my hands and grabbed the device. An unknown number flashed on the screen.

"Hello?" I asked, pressing the phone to my ear.

"Mrs. Caldwell? Is this Marnie Caldwell?" a male voice demanded. The tone held a frantic edge.

"Speaking. Who is this?"

"I'm Liam. Acquisitions team. I report to Rainer."

I grabbed a dish towel, drying my fingers. "Liam, hi. Is everything alright? Rainer usually texts if there's a change of plans."

"We have a massive problem, Mrs. Caldwell," Liam rushed out, his words blurring together. "He's locked in a boardroom with the Tokyo representatives. They're demanding the Q3 projections, and he left the blue acquisitions folder on his home office desk."

"Why didn't he call me himself?"

"They confiscated our personal devices for the negotiation. I slipped out to use a landline. We need that file immediately, or the merger falls apart. Can you bring it down to the office?"

"Right now?"

"Please. He specifically told me, 'Call Marnie, she'll know exactly where it is.' The clients are threatening to walk."

"Okay. Give me twenty minutes. I'll find it and head straight there."

I ended the call and tossed the towel onto the counter. Rainer’s study sat at the end of the hall. I pushed the heavy oak door open and scanned the messy surface. True to Liam’s word, a thick blue file rested next to his keyboard.

Snatching the documents, I grabbed my car keys from the bowl by the front door.

The drive downtown took fifteen minutes. Traffic parted easily. I pulled into the underground garage of Caldwell Enterprises and rolled down my window.

"Afternoon, Marcus," I greeted the security guard at the gate.

"Afternoon, Mrs. Caldwell," Marcus replied, tipping his hat. "Mr. Caldwell didn't mention you were coming by."

"Emergency document delivery. Is he still in the main boardroom?"

"Far as I know. Top floor is locked down for the Tokyo guys."

"Thanks, Marcus."

I parked the car and stepped into the private executive elevator. The metal doors slid shut. The digital numbers ticked upward to the fiftieth floor.

I checked my reflection in the mirrored walls. A stray piece of hair stuck out. I tucked it behind my ear. Seven years of marriage, and I still liked dropping by his office. Rainer always lit up when I surprised him. Today was business, but maybe I could steal a quick kiss before he rushed back to his clients.

The elevator chimed.

The doors parted. The reception desk sat completely empty. A small "Out to Lunch" sign rested next to the phone.

"Hello?" I called out softly.

Silence answered. The corridor stretched ahead, lined with frosted glass walls.

I gripped the blue folder tighter and headed toward the corner office. The thick carpet absorbed my footsteps. The entire wing felt abandoned.

Ten feet away from his door, a muffled sound stopped me in my tracks.

A sharp gasp.

Then, a low, guttural groan.

I froze. The noise leaked through a two-inch gap where his office door stood slightly ajar.

"Rainer?" I whispered, taking a cautious step forward.

"Fuck, Vera," Rainer's voice growled. The sound sliced through the quiet hallway. "Spread your legs wider for me."

My stomach plummeted. The blue folder suddenly felt like a block of lead in my hands.

I crept closer. My pulse pounded in my ears, drowning out the ambient hum of the air conditioning. I pressed my right eye near the crack in the wood.

The scene inside hit me like a physical blow.

Vera, his twenty-four-year-old secretary, sat perched on the edge of Rainer’s massive mahogany desk. Her pencil skirt was shoved all the way up to her waist. Her bare thighs hooked over his hips.

Rainer stood between her legs. His suit pants were unzipped, pushed down his thighs.

"Rainer, wait. The door," Vera whimpered, her head tossing back. "Someone might see."

"Leave it," he grunted, driving his hips forward. The heavy thud of flesh slapping flesh echoed in the room. "Nobody is coming. The whole floor is at the catered lunch."

"But what if someone walks by?"

"Let them. Let them hear me fucking you. I want everyone to know what a dirty slut my secretary is."

"Yes," she moaned, her fingers digging into his broad shoulders. "Fuck me harder, Rainer. Don't stop."

"Look at this wet cunt," he sneered, sliding a hand up to grope her bare breasts, having unbuttoned her sheer blouse completely. "You love it when I bury my cock inside you right on this desk, don't you? Right where I sign my contracts."

"I love it. Oh god, put it deeper. Stretch me out."

"Say my name again while I fuck you."

"Rainer. Please, Rainer. You feel so good."

"That's it, Vera. Take my cock like a good girl. You take it better than anyone."

A wave of nausea crashed over me. My vision blurred.

Seven years.

Seven years of loyalty, of building a life together, of trusting this man with absolutely everything I had. It all unraveled in a matter of seconds. He was right there. Sweating over another woman. Using the exact same desk where we kept a framed photo of our wedding day.

I tried to step back. I needed to run. I needed to get out of this building before I threw up.

My hands trembled violently. The muscles in my fingers simply gave out.

The blue folder slipped from my grasp.

It hit the hardwood floor just outside the carpeted zone with a deafening smack. Dozens of financial reports spilled across the polished wood, fanning out like a deck of dropped cards.

Inside the office, the frantic motion stopped instantly.

"What the fuck was that?" Rainer snapped, his voice dropping an octave.

Through the narrow gap, I saw Vera’s head snap toward the door. Her dark eyes widened in sheer panic. She stared directly at the crack.

I spun around, slamming my spine against the corridor wall.

My chest heaved. I clamped both hands over my mouth to stifle a sob. The cold plaster seeped through my thin blouse, chilling my skin, but it did nothing to cool the burning humiliation searing through my veins.

"Did you lock it?" Rainer demanded, the distinct sound of a zipper hastily pulling up.

"I thought you did!" Vera hissed, her bare feet hitting the floor.

"Stay here."

Heavy shoes approached the door. Each thud against the floorboards sounded like a countdown to my execution.

I remained pinned against the wall, trapped. The elevator was too far. The stairwell required crossing directly in front of his office.

The brass doorknob turned.

The hinges creaked as the door swung open, casting a long shadow over the scattered papers at my feet.

"Marnie?"
