Chapter 2

Elara POV

The strange, vital spark between us died the moment Kael's expression turned to one of glacial contempt. He pulled his hand from my wrist as if my skin were a hot coal. He turned his broad back on me and strode toward the center of the hall.

A cold voice echoed in the hollows of my mind.

Come to my study after the guests depart.

The Mind-Link was severed before I could form a reply. A new terror took hold. His study? I had never been permitted beyond the servants' corridors and did not know the way. But as the last carriage rolled away, a strange pull resonated deep in my bones. The searing scent of winter woods and amber liquor became my sole compass, a thread of cold air drawing me through opulent, unfamiliar galleries where my very presence felt like a trespass. I followed it with my head bowed, each step a dull thud that seemed to echo not on the floor, but inside my own chest, certain that at any moment a guard's hand would fall upon my shoulder.

Hours later, I stood trembling in the gloom of his study.

Kael was seated behind a massive desk of dark mahogany, his disgust a palpable thing in the air between us.

"You are an error," Kael said, his voice devoid of all inflection.

"Please, Alpha," I begged, my inner wolf whining for a touch I now knew I would never receive. "We are mates."

"The Blood Moon Pack requires a strong Luna," he growled. "A queen of iron and silver to stand at my side. Not a housemaid prone to accidents."

"I can learn," I cried, taking a half-step toward him.

His eyes flashed, the amber turning to molten gold. I saw his jaw clench so hard the muscle feathered beneath his skin. His wolf was fighting him—I could feel it through the fragile, newborn bond, a desperate, clawing force that wanted to break free and claim me. But Kael crushed it with an iron will, burying the howl of his own soul beneath the cold weight of centuries of expectation. He was Alpha. He was CEO. He was the heir to a dynasty that had never once accepted weakness. And I, a servant with silver-scarred hands, was the very embodiment of everything his bloodline had been bred to despise.

He unleashed the Alpha's Command.

"Kneel."

The order bypassed my will, seizing my muscles in an iron grip. My body was thrown forward, my knees striking the freezing flagstones with a sharp crack.

Tears, hot and useless, spilled down my cheeks.

Kael rose, looming over me like some dark monument.

He looked down at me and spoke the ancient, devastating words.

"I, Kael, reject you, Elara, as my mate."

The invisible tether connecting our souls did not snap; it unraveled, thread by painful thread. The pain was a physical presence, a hollowing out, as if my very ribs had been prized apart.

The certainty that had anchored me moments before now crumbled like worm-eaten wood, dissolving into dust at the slightest touch.

I curled on the floor, a cough racking my body, and a drop of blood stained the stone.

The absolute pressure of his presence forced my mouth open.

I had to complete the ritual.

"I, Elara," I choked, the words tasting of blood. "Accept your rejection."

The last, frayed thread of our bond withered into nothing.

Kael flinched, his hand flying to his own chest as if struck by a sudden, unseen blow. His amber eyes widened, and for one raw, unguarded moment, I saw agony—pure, undiluted agony—flood his features before he could mask it. His inner wolf was howling, clawing at the cage of his ribs, and the echo of that howl reverberated through the dying bond like a death knell. But he swiftly buried the spasm behind a wall of cold fury, and when he spoke again, his voice was ice.

"Get out of my territory," he ordered. "You are banished."

I dragged myself to my feet, my legs trembling beneath me like a newborn foal's. The bond was dead. The mate who should have been my anchor had just shattered my soul on the cold stone of his study floor. And as I stumbled toward the door, I heard it—a low, keening whine from deep within his chest, a sound no Alpha should ever make. His wolf was already mourning. But it was too late. The words had been spoken. The bond was severed. And I was walking into the Black Forest with nothing but the ghost of a touch still burning on my wrist and the bitter taste of blood on my tongue.
