After My Mate Poisoned My Wolf Chapter 1

The mark on my neck went cold at the exact word *reject*.

One second it was warm, the way it had been warm for seven years, a small sun under my skin. Then Damien said my name — Evelyn Webb — and the warmth just stopped, like a door swinging shut on an empty room. I felt it travel down through my sternum, a blade dragged slow through bone, and my knees buckled before my mind caught up to what my body already knew.

"I, Damien Pierce, Alpha of Silverfang, reject you, Evelyn Webb, as my mate and Luna."

Three hundred wolves went silent. I heard my own breath, ragged, too loud. Natalie's hand closed around my arm before I hit the platform floor — she'd been standing two feet behind me the whole ceremony, close the way she always was, close the way a Gamma stands when she doesn't trust the room.

"Ev," she said, low. "I've got you. Stand."

I stood.

Damien's eyes were still glassy from the mind-link, some frantic thread from Aileen about rogues near her cabin, and I understood, with perfect clarity, that he had chosen this exact second to say the vow because it gave him somewhere else to run afterward. Coward's timing. I pressed two fingers to the dead spot on my throat, once, and walked to the microphone.

"I accept the rejection," I said. My voice didn't shake. Three hundred faces stared up at me and not one of them breathed. "Effective tonight, I rescind every alliance clause I personally drafted and ratified as Luna of Silverfang — the Ironridge trade pact, the Blackwater border treaty, the Council supply agreements. All require Luna signature to remain binding. Mine is withdrawn."

Damien's face went the color of old paper.

Natalie stepped up beside me, tore the Gamma insignia from her collar, and dropped it at his feet. It made almost no sound landing. She didn't look back at him once. We walked out together into the dark and nobody stopped us, because nobody in that pack had the authority left to.

Rose didn't ask questions when I came through her kitchen door. She just pulled out a chair, sat me in it, and held me, humming that same tuneless lullaby she'd hummed since I was small enough to fit against her collarbone. I let myself be held. It was the only place I ever let myself be less than composed.

That's when the echo hit me — a phantom current running up through the dead bond, faint but unmistakable: heat, want, a scent that wasn't mine underneath it. Damien's arousal. Aileen's smell dressed over it like a second skin. I felt his desire for her crawl through my own body and I had to grip the table edge until it passed.

I told Rose nothing. I pressed my fingers to the cold mark and breathed until it faded.

He came back to the pack house the next morning drenched in her. Not a trace — layers, deliberate, thick across his throat and collarbone like he'd rubbed himself in her on purpose. Natalie was already beside me in the hallway when he rounded the corner.

"Get out of my quarters," I said. Level. Quiet enough that he had to lean in to hear it, and hated himself for leaning.

"Evelyn—"

"Natalie, have the Beta reset every ward on the Luna wing by noon." I didn't raise my voice. I didn't need to. "And file the separation decree with the Council registry today. This stops being personal as of this morning."

Something low and furious stirred beneath my ribs when he flinched — something that had been silent my whole life, uncoiling for the first time. *Not yet,* it seemed to say. *But soon.*

By the second night, Aileen had the Luna quarters. I heard it from Natalie, but I saw the rest myself, passing the east hall on my way to collect the last of my files — Aileen in front of the hallway mirror, chin lifted at the exact angle I used to hold mine in council meetings, hair pinned the way I'd worn it for treaty signings.

Martha stood behind her, adjusting a pin, smiling like a woman correcting a hem.

"There," Martha said. "Seven years of mistake, finally put right." Her eyes slid to me in the doorway, cold and pleased. "That Omega woman's daughter never belonged here."

I didn't answer. I only watched Aileen practice my posture in a mirror that had never once been hers, and felt that low furious thing under my ribs coil tighter.
