A heavy, freezing rain fell from a sky the color of slate. I dragged my broken body through the clinging mud of the Black Forest. I was a Rogue now, a wolf without a pack, cast out and left to die. The severed bond had ignited a violent fever that burned through my veins. My vision swam, and my breath came in shallow rasps.

A low, guttural growl echoed from the dripping trees.

Three massive, filth-matted wolves emerged from the shadows. They were feral Rogues, their minds lost to the wild, killing for sport. They began to circle me, their yellow eyes fixed on my weak, human form.

Suddenly, a blinding cramp ripped through my spine.

The clock of my own biology had struck midnight. It was my eighteenth birthday—the precise moment of my first Shift. I was a late bloomer, a wolf whose transformation had been delayed by years of malnutrition and the constant, low-grade silver poisoning that came from scrubbing the pack's candelabras until my hands bled. My body had been too weak to Shift. But tonight, under the full moon, something ancient and unstoppable was finally breaking free.

Ordinarily, a werewolf's fated mate is present to anchor their soul, to ease the agony of the change. Without Kael, the pain was magnified tenfold.

My bones began to break and reform under my skin, the sound a series of sickening cracks and pops. I screamed, a raw, horrific sound that was swallowed by the storm.

The Rogues lunged.

Their claws tore through my arms and legs, ripping the flesh.

I was going to die here, in the mud and the rain.

Just as a Rogue lunged for my throat, the thick clouds overhead were rent asunder. The full moon, stark and white, cast a massive beam of silver light directly upon me.

The moonlight touched my bleeding skin, and something ancient and dormant stirred in my blood. The fever's heat did not break; it transformed, coalescing into a terrifying, explosive power.

My bones snapped into their final configuration. Fur erupted from my skin, but it was not the common grey or brown of an ordinary wolf.

It was a pure, luminous white.

I was no longer just a girl; I was a legend given flesh, the last of a bloodline said to carry the direct blessing of the Moon Goddess.

My body grew, expanding into the form of a massive dire wolf that towered over the feral Rogues.

I let out a roar that seemed to shake the very roots of the ancient forest.

The three Rogues froze.

The raw terror emanating from me, an aura of cold, ancient power, forced them to their bellies, where they whined in absolute, instinctual submission.

I stood over the cowering Rogues, my white fur glowing under the moon like fresh snow lit from within. The pain of the broken bond was still there—a hollow ache in the center of my chest that I knew would never fully heal. But it no longer defined me. The Omega who had scrubbed silver until her knuckles bled was dead, torn apart by feral claws in the mud of the Black Forest. What rose from her broken body was something the pack had never seen before. Something the Alpha who had rejected me would spend the rest of his life trying to reclaim. I threw my head back and howled at the moon—and the forest howled back.
