He Let His Mistress Raise My Son Chapter 1

I gave up my career when Jace was still the quarterback nobody recognized.

I packed his bags, iced his throwing shoulder, memorized every road schedule, and raised our son while he became the face of the league.

He used to tell reporters I was the reason he could play without worrying about home.

Then Olivia came back.

She was his high school first love and now a child psychologist.

At first, she only helped our three-year-old sleep through the night.

Then Jace gave her our garage code.

He added her to Noah’s preschool account.

He let her replace me at parent events because she was “better with him lately.”

When Noah was hospitalized with a fever, I arrived to find Olivia in the chair beside his bed.

The doctor looked at her and asked, “Mom, when was his last dose?”

Before I could answer, Jace stopped me.

“At least Olivia knows how to take care of him.”

“Jace, she isn’t his mother.”

“Maybe that’s not the part that matters anymore.”

The phone buzzed against the entryway console just as I was wrestling Noah's left sneaker onto his foot.

"Hold still, buddy. Other foot."

"Mommy, Rex," Noah said, waving the blue dinosaur cup he refused to be separated from for more than ten minutes.

"I've got Rex. Give me your foot."

Jace came down the hall already scrolling. Even at home, three weeks before the Titans' opener, he carried himself like someone moving between meetings.

"I sent Olivia the garage code," he said. "She's five minutes out."

I looked up. "The permanent one?"

"The spare. Same difference." He didn't lift his eyes from the screen. "She said twenty minutes. It's just a sleep follow-up."

"You gave your ex a code to our house before she even got here."

His jaw tightened. "She has a car full of equipment, Maya. I'm not making her stand on the porch while we play gatekeeper."

The doorbell rang before I could answer.

Olivia Marsh stepped in like someone who had already measured the rooms. Blond ponytail. Cream cardigan. Clipboard tucked under one arm. She was a licensed clinical social worker who had built a private practice around pediatric sleep and family routines. She was also the woman Jace had loved before me.

She smiled at Noah first.

"Is that the famous dinosaur cup?"

"His name is Rex," Noah told her.

"Rex. Got it." She crouched, easy and warm. "Dad told me all about him."

Then she stood and turned to me. "Thanks for fitting me in, Maya. I only want to check his room and review last night's pattern. He woke at eleven-forty and again around three-ten, right?"

I stared at her. "Who told you that?"

"Jace sent me the sleep log. I like to come prepared."

"I sent it last night," Jace said behind me. "She's a professional. Don't turn every piece of information into a territory fight."

Territory.

For six years I had tracked his training blocks, rehab appointments, concussion protocol, travel days, nutrition, and every schedule that let him become the face of an NFL franchise. Since Noah was born, I had tracked every fever, feeding, preschool form, and nap.

Now my son's night waking was another woman's data because she had letters after her name.

"Right," I said. "Territory."

Olivia was already walking toward Noah's room.

I followed.

She stopped at the window and pinched the blackout curtain between two fingers. "He likes it cracked about this much?"

Exactly the gap I left every afternoon.

"Yes."

"Good." Her gaze moved to the amber plug-in nightlight beside the dresser. She unplugged it and set it on top.

"What are you doing?"

"I'd like to test three nights without ambient light. I'll stay through bedtime, collect observations, then step out once he's settled. If you and Jace are comfortable, I can handle the full routine so you both get a break."

"He's three. He asks for that light."

"Some children ask for a sleep association because adults keep reinforcing it."

"He's not a case file. He's my son."

Jace filled the doorway.

"Maya."

"She's changing his room."

"You've done bedtime your way for three years. That doesn't mean every part of it has to stay your way forever."

He said it in front of her.

Olivia lifted both hands. "I don't want to cause tension. I can leave."

"Stay," Jace said immediately. "That's why we asked you here."

We hadn't asked her. He had.

Noah was in the hallway watching us, Rex clutched against his chest. I refused to turn his bedroom into a place where adults fought over him. I picked up the nightlight, plugged it back in, and walked away.

Ten minutes later, while I rinsed dinner plates, the amber glow moved across the dark kitchen window behind my reflection.

Jace was carrying the nightlight toward the garage.

I gripped the edge of the sink and said nothing.

Noah sat at the breakfast bar eating banana bread. Olivia was beside him cutting it into smaller squares.

Then I saw the screen in her hand.

Not my phone. Hers. But the pale-green header belonged to Sunrise Learning Center's parent portal, and the account at the top read Noah Bennett.

"You're logged into his preschool account."

Olivia glanced up. "Jace added me this afternoon. I asked for access to the nap notes."

I set the wet plate down.

"Jace."

He came back from the garage. "What?"

"You gave her portal access."

"I made her an authorized caregiver. It's a checkbox."

"You didn't ask me."

"Season starts in nine days. I'm at the facility twelve hours some days. If you get stuck somewhere, someone qualified should be able to pick Noah up."

"Your mother is on the list. So is our sitter."

"Olivia is already working with him. Stop acting like I'm erasing you because I added backup."

I looked at him, then at the woman holding my son's routine in her hand.

"Backup doesn't usually get the house code first."

Olivia looked down at the screen.

Noah went to bed at seven-forty. Just after ten, his cry came through the monitor.

"Mommy."

I was moving before the second syllable.

Olivia was faster.

She came out of the guest room in socks and slipped through Noah's door. Jace stepped into my path and laid a hand across my forearm.

"Let her work. That's the point of the observation."

"He called for me."

"He called out. If we interrupt every change, we learn nothing."

Through the door I heard Olivia's low voice. Noah's crying softened against a shoulder that wasn't mine.

I turned away before Jace could read my face.

In the kitchen, I opened my laptop and signed into the preschool portal. I saved screenshots of the contact list, pickup permissions, and change history into a dated folder in my cloud drive.

A notification slid across the top of the screen.

Emergency Contact Updated: Olivia Marsh added as Contact 2 for Noah Bennett.

I read it twice.

Then I opened the account history and saved that too.

Down the hall, my son had gone quiet.

For the first time that night, so had I.
