Chapter 2

The icy downpour hit Adelaide like a wall of needles the second she crossed the threshold.

She hadn't made it past the iron gates of the estate before the blinding beams of headlights pinned her against the high stone wall. The black Maybach screeched to a halt, cutting off her path.

The driver’s door opened, and Harrison stepped out into the deluge, accompanied by two heavy-set estate guards. He didn't offer an umbrella. Instead, he held a tablet and a small leather tray.

"Mrs. Vance," Harrison said, his tone as indifferent as the falling rain. "Mr. Grayson instructed us to complete the exit protocol before you leave the premises."

Adelaide stopped, her two suitcases dripping wet at her side. "Exit protocol?"

"All assets associated with your marital lifestyle are the property of Grayson Global," Harrison stated, reading directly from the tablet. "Hand over the keys to the Mercedes, your house keys, and all corporate-issued credit cards."

A harsh laugh escaped Adelaide’s lips, swallowed instantly by the roaring wind. "My car? Oscar gave me that car on my birthday."

"The title is registered under Grayson Global," Harrison replied, extending the tray. "Please."

With cold, precise movements, Adelaide unzipped her purse. She pulled out the sleek silver key fob to her car and tossed it onto the tray. Next came her ring of house keys. Finally, she opened her wallet, slid out the sleek black Amex—the one Oscar used to track every single penny she spent—and dropped it onto the tray.

"Is that all?" she asked, her voice lethal in its quiet rage.

"Your wallet, ma'am," Harrison said. "Any cards linked to joint accounts must be surrendered."

"I don't have joint accounts," Adelaide said sharply. "You know that better than anyone."

Before Harrison could respond, a low, smooth voice cut through the dark.

"Harrison, that’s quite enough. You're treating her like a criminal."

Maeve stepped out from the covered driveway, holding a designer golf umbrella over her head. She wore an oversized cashmere coat thrown over her shoulders, looking like a high-fashion model standing in the middle of a storm. She strolled toward them, her heels clicking cleanly on the wet cobblestones.

"Oscar told me how hard things have been for you, Adelaide," Maeve said softly, stopping a few feet away. She looked at Adelaide’s rain-soaked hair and waterlogged dress with deep, performative pity. "It’s tragic, really. To give three years of your youth to a man who simply belonged to someone else."

"If you came out here to gloat, Maeve, you're wasting your time," Adelaide said, her gaze steady. "The rain is doing a much better job of miserable than you are."

Maeve smiled—a faint, cruel curving of her painted lips. She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a checkbook. With a delicate gold pen, she rapidly scribbled a figure, tore the paper from the spine, and held it out between two manicured fingers.

"Fifty thousand dollars," Maeve murmured, holding it toward Adelaide. "Personal funds, not Grayson Global money. Oscar’s settlement will take weeks to clear through the attorneys. You have no family left, no job, and nowhere to go tonight. Take it. Think of it as a gift from a sister in art... or a tip for taking care of Oscar while I was away."

The insult was wrapped in silk, but it cut like broken glass.

Adelaide looked at the slip of paper fluttering in the damp breeze. She reached out, took the check from Maeve’s fingers, and looked her dead in the eye.

Without a word, Adelaide folded the check in half. Then in half again. With deliberate slowness, she tore it into tiny, precise ribbons and opened her hand, letting the wet paper scraps fly away in the wind.

"I may be leaving tonight with nothing," Adelaide said, her voice dropping into a register so dark and cold it made Maeve’s smile falter. "But I will never take a dime of your pity, Maeve. Keep your money. You're going to need every cent of it to keep Oscar interested."

Turning on her heel, Adelaide grabbed the handles of her wet suitcases and walked through the open gates, leaving Maeve standing frozen in the dark.

An hour later, the storm had turned into a steady, suffocating mist.

Adelaide dragged her heavy bags down the gleaming, neon-lit sidewalks of the financial district. Her silk dress was ruined, clinging to her skin like ice. Her feet burned in her soaked heels, but she couldn't stop walking. She couldn't afford a hotel. She couldn't call a cab. Her personal debit card—containing the tiny sum of money she had saved from her freelance design work before Oscar forced her to quit—had barely two hundred dollars on it.

She sat down on a concrete bench beneath the awning of a closed luxury boutique, pulling her knees to her chest to stop the shivering.

Looking at her bare, pale hands—the diamond ring Oscar had forced her to leave on the nightstand already missing—a wave of bitter irony washed over her.

Penniless again.

It was horrifyingly familiar. Six years ago, she had sat in a room just like this, staring down the barrel of absolute ruin.

Six years ago, her father’s business had collapsed into a black hole of fraud and debt created by his business partners. As he lay dying in an ICU bed, surrounded by machines she couldn't afford to keep turned on, a shadowy legal firm had approached her with a contract.

A blind surrogacy agreement.

The terms were ruthless, absolute, and total:

> An elite, anonymous high-net-worth client requires an egg donor and surrogate. Complete secrecy. No contact. No identity disclosure. The surrogate will never see the client's face, will never know the child's sex or location, and will surrender all parental rights the moment of birth. In exchange: five million dollars, paid directly to the hospital to clear all medical and family liabilities.

Adelaide remembered the cold, sterile room of the private proxy clinic. She remembered the blindfold she was required to wear during every check-up to ensure she never caught a glimpse of the elite medical staff or the legal proxies.

She remembered the agonizing nine months spent in total isolation in a luxury compound in the mountains. And most of all, she remembered the sound.

The sharp, sudden cry of a newborn baby echoing in the delivery room six years ago.

She had reached out her trembling, exhausted hands, begging just to hold the baby for a single second, just to know if it was a boy or a girl. But the doctors had been fast. They had whisked the infant away behind a heavy steel door before she could even open her eyes.

She had sold her own flesh and blood to save her father. And two weeks later, her father had died anyway.

Adelaide pressed her forehead against her knees, a single hot tear finally breaking through her cold composure and spilling onto her wet silk dress.

She had given up everything six years ago to clear her family’s name, only to let Oscar Grayson reduce her to a shadow for three years. She had let herself be erased twice in one lifetime.

Never again, she thought, her teeth grinding together as the shivering stopped, replaced by a sudden, fierce heat in her chest.

She looked up at the towering skyscrapers around her—including the massive, dark monolith of the Grayson Global headquarters holding court over the city skyline.

They thought she was a docile, helpless girl who would crawl away into the dark and die. They thought they had broken her.

Adelaide reached into her pocket, pulled out her personal, unmonitored phone, and wiped the rain off the glass. She didn't call a homeless shelter. She didn't call Oscar.

She dialed a number she hadn't called in four long years—the personal line of Charlotte Vance, her estranged aunt and the black sheep of the fashion world.

The phone rang three times before a sharp, sophisticated voice answered. "Hello?"

"Aunt Charlotte," Adelaide said, her voice clear, hard, and stripped of every ounce of weakness. "It's Adelaide. I need a place to stay tonight. And tomorrow... I'm taking my life back."
