Chapter 3

The heavy mahogany doors of The Sovereign stood like an impenetrable fortress against the howling storm.

Located in the subterranean level of a historic hotel three blocks from the financial district, The Sovereign was an elite, old-money cigar club—a dimly lit sanctuary of polished leather, crystal decanters, and high-stakes corporate orchestration. It was a place where multi-billion-dollar mergers were sealed with a handshake and where women were strictly forbidden from holding individual memberships.

Adelaide knew the address by heart. Before his business collapsed, her father had held a rare, lifetime founding key to the establishment.

Drenched to the bone, her silk dress clinging cold against her skin and water dripping onto the plush Persian rug, Adelaide pushed open the heavy brass-trimmed doors. The warmth of the room hit her instantly, smelling heavily of aged bourbon, rich tobacco, and cedarwood.

The moment her dripping heels stepped onto the hardwood threshold, the low hum of masculine voices stalled. Heads turned. Eyes narrowed.

A uniformed head of security stepped forward instantly, his expression shifting from surprise to stern disapproval as he looked at her wet suitcases and rain-soaked hair.

"Ma'am, you're in the wrong place," the security guard said, his tone low but firm as he stepped directly into her path. "This is a private, members-only establishment. I’m going to have to ask you to leave immediately."

"My father was Arthur Vance," Adelaide said, holding her chin high despite the shiver threatening to crack her posture. "Member number 114. I am merely seeking shelter from the storm while I arrange transport."

"Mr. Vance’s membership expired upon his passing, ma'am," the guard replied coldly, reaching out a gloved hand to grasp the handle of her suitcase to usher her back toward the rain. "And *The Sovereign* does not allow unescorted women on the main floor. Please step outside before I have to call—"

"Release the bags, Thomas."

The voice cut through the ambient haze of the lounge like a razor slicing silk. It was deep, commanding, and resonated with a calm, absolute authority that caused every waiter and patron in the room to instantly go still.

The guard’s hand froze. He backed away immediately, bowing his head. "Mr. Grayson. My apologies, sir. I was just—"

"I know what you were doing," the voice replied smoothly. "And you're making a spectacle."

From the shadows of the elevated corner VIP booth—a private alcove shielded by smoked glass and heavy velvet drapery—a man stepped into the warm light.

**Dean Grayson.**

He was imposing, standing well over six feet tall, with broad shoulders encased in a flawless, bespoke charcoal suit. At thirty-eight, he possessed a lethal, dark sophistication that made his nephew, Oscar, look like a boy playing dress-up in his father's clothes. Sharp gray eyes locked onto Adelaide from beneath straight, dark brows, carrying an intensity that felt almost physically heavy.

Dean was the supreme CEO of Grayson Global, the undisputed patriarch of the Grayson family, and the most feared corporate titan in the country.

He didn't move with urgency. He stepped down from the booth, a crystal tumbler of neat whiskey balanced effortlessly in his left hand, and walked toward Adelaide. Every eye in the club followed him, but his attention remained entirely anchored on her.

"Adelaide," Dean said, his deep voice carrying a faint, magnetic rasp. "You're soaking wet."

Adelaide steeled herself, masking her shock beneath a cool facade. She knew who Dean was, of course, though in her three years of marriage to Oscar, she had only seen Dean from a distance at annual shareholder galas. Oscar had always kept her far away from his uncle, speaking of Dean with a mix of intense fear and bitter resentment.

"Mr. Grayson," Adelaide acknowledged, her voice remarkably steady. "I didn't realize this was your evening refuge."

"It isn't," Dean replied, stopping two paces away from her. The faint scent of expensive sandalwood and dark espresso rolled off him, cutting through the chill in her bones. "I came here to avoid the storm. It seems we had the same idea."

He lifted a finger, signaling a waiter, who instantly rushed over with a thick, warm cashmere throw. Dean took it and, with surprisingly gentle movements, draped it over Adelaide’s wet shoulders. The warmth was immediate, but the lingering heat of Dean's hand briefly brushing against her collarbone sent a strange, sharp shock down her spine.

"Your driver, Harrison, has a big mouth when he thinks no one important is listening," Dean said casually, taking a slow sip from his tumbler. "He reported your departure to the corporate security desk twenty minutes ago. Oscar signed the dissolution papers, I presume?"

Adelaide’s eyes narrowed slightly. "You move quickly on family gossip, Mr. Grayson."

"It isn't gossip when it involves the reputational risk of my company," Dean corrected, his dark eyes searching her face with cold, analytical precision. He didn't look at her with pity—unlike Maeve or Oscar. He looked at her like a strategist evaluating an unexpected, highly dangerous piece on a chessboard. "Oscar is a fool. He traded a woman who held her tongue for three years under immense pressure for a gold-digger who will leak his board conflicts to the press within a month."

Adelaide offered a faint, razor-sharp smile. "I see you hold your nephew in high regard."

"I hold competence in high regard," Dean said smoothly. He gestured toward his private booth. "Sit down, Adelaide. You look like you're about to collapse, and I dislike talking business with someone who is shivering."

"Business?" Adelaide asked, standing her ground. "I don't have any business with Grayson Global anymore. I signed the paper. I'm out."

Dean turned back to look at her over his shoulder, a slow, dangerous smile curving his lips.

"You signed Oscar's paper," Dean murmured, his gray eyes glinting in the low light. "You haven't seen mine yet."
