The crisp autumn air filled my lungs as I patrolled the border between Silver Moon and Morrison territories. My wolf, Lyra, was restless beneath my skin, sensing my unease. We'd been tracking the same path for hours, but I wasn't ready to return home. Not yet. Not while my thoughts were consumed by whispers and rumors that had reached my ears over the past weeks. I paused at the ridge overlooking the Morrison Pack house, its stone walls gleaming in the afternoon sun. My enhanced senses picked up the usual sounds and scents of pack life—until something different caught my attention. A scent that shouldn't be there. From Betrayal to Lycan Mate Chapter 1

Lyra whimpered inside me as the wind shifted, carrying with it the unmistakable mingled scents of Gabriel Morrison and Stella Brooks. My destined mate and the rogue wolf I had once saved from certain death.

*No. It can't be.*

But there was no mistaking it. Their scents were intertwined, emanating from the private quarters of the Morrison Pack house. The implications were clear, and each breath I took felt like swallowing broken glass.

"*He wouldn't dare,*" Lyra growled within me, her silver form pacing restlessly in my mind.

"We need to know for sure," I whispered, my voice steady despite the trembling in my chest.

I straightened my silver leather armor—the mark of my position as the Alpha's daughter and future Luna—and made my way down the ridge toward the Morrison Pack house. With each step, the mingled scents grew stronger, more intimate. By the time I reached the guards at the entrance, my composure was a brittle mask over a storm of emotions.

"I'm here to see Gabriel," I announced, my voice carrying the authority I'd been raised to project.

The guards exchanged glances but didn't dare refuse me. One nodded and led me through the familiar corridors toward Gabriel's private chambers. The scent was overwhelming now, confirming what I had desperately hoped was just paranoia.

Outside his door, I dismissed the guard with a curt nod. I needed no witnesses for what was to come. Taking a deep breath, I knocked once and entered without waiting for permission.

Gabriel stood by the window, his broad shoulders tensing at my arrival. He turned slowly, and I caught the flash of guilt in his eyes before he masked it with a smile that didn't reach his eyes.

"Isabella, I wasn't expecting you today," he said, his voice attempting warmth but falling short.

My gaze swept the room, noting the rumpled bedsheets and the lingering scent of Stella that permeated every corner. There was no denying it now.

"Clearly," I replied, my voice cool and controlled despite the fire raging inside me. "You've been busy with... other matters."

He had the decency to look away, his hand rubbing the back of his neck—the nervous tic that always betrayed his discomfort.

"Isabella, it's not what you think—"

"It's exactly what I think," I cut him off, standing tall in my silver armor, my back straight and chin high. "Her scent is all over you, Gabriel. All over this room."

He stepped toward me, his hands outstretched in a placating gesture. "She needed help, Isabella. She's vulnerable, alone—"

"And I was the one who saved her," I reminded him, the irony bitter on my tongue. "I brought her to safety when she was attacked by rogues. And this is how she repays my kindness? By seducing my mate?"

Gabriel's eyes flashed with defiance. "It's not like that. She needs protection—"

"And I need loyalty," I stated, my voice dropping to a dangerous calm. "End this with Stella, or our mate bond is over."

The ultimatum hung in the air between us, heavy and final. Gabriel's face paled, his eyes widening as he realized the gravity of my words.

"You can't mean that," he whispered. "Our packs, the alliance—"

"Mean nothing without trust," I finished for him. "I won't be second choice, Gabriel. Not even for the son of an Alpha."

He faltered, his excuses dying on his lips as he saw the determination in my eyes. "Isabella, please understand. Stella is... she's in a difficult position. She has no one else."

My silver eyes hardened, and I felt Lyra's anger merge with my own. "Then it seems your choice is made."

Without another word, I turned and left the room, my steps measured and dignified. I would not break, not here, not where he could see.

Back at Silver Moon Pack headquarters, I found my father, Alpha Marcus Hartwell, in the council chamber, finalizing preparations for the mate ceremony that was to take place in three days.

"Isabella," he greeted me, his keen eyes immediately noting my rigid posture. "What's happened?"

I took a deep breath, pushing down the ache in my chest. "We need to discuss the Morrison alliance, Father."

As the council members filed out at my father's signal, I stood alone in the center of the room, feeling the weight of what was to come pressing down on me. In three days, I would either be mated to Gabriel Morrison or standing alone before both packs.

Later that evening, I stood in my chambers as my handmaidens helped me into the ceremonial silver gown that had been crafted for the mate ceremony. Every stitch represented the dignity of our pack, the weight of the alliance, the future that had been planned since my childhood.

As I stared at my reflection, I wondered if Gabriel was with her now, if he had already made his choice. The thought sent a fresh wave of pain through me, but I refused to let it show.

"Are you ready, my lady?" one of the handmaidens asked, adjusting the intricate silver crown on my head.

"Yes," I replied, though my heart trembled with uncertainty about what tomorrow would bring. "I'm ready for whatever comes."

The bass from the karaoke bar pulsed through my chest like a second heartbeat, each thump making my temples throb. I watched Lucca laughing with his pack brothers, his arm slung casually over Delta Marcus's shoulder as they belted out some terrible rendition of an old pack anthem. The crowd was a sea of familiar faces from Silvermoon, all here to celebrate our territory's founding anniversary. I'd been smiling for two hours straight, playing the perfect Luna-to-be, but the noise was finally winning. 'I need some air,' I murmured to Mira, who nodded with understanding before turning back to her own conversation. I took a deep breath, letting Selene, my wolf, stretch contentedly within me. For just a moment, I could pretend I was alone with the night sky. Then I heard Lucca's voice.
