I Raised Another Woman's Son While My Husband Stole My Fortune
Chapter 3
"Welcome back, Miss Sterling."
The security guard at the front desk immediately lowered his head.
I stood in the massive glass lobby of Sterling Jewelry Group. Adrian Hayes stood beside me, watching my reaction. A dozen employees walked past us, and every single one of them offered a polite nod in my direction.
"They all know me," I whispered.
"You ran this building for five years," Adrian replied. "Take the elevator to the top floor. See for yourself."
We rode up in silence. The steel doors parted, revealing a sprawling penthouse suite. A mahogany desk dominated the center of the room.
"Look at the wall," Adrian instructed.
I stepped closer. Framed photographs lined the plaster. There I was, shaking hands with the city mayor. There I was, holding a crystal corporate award.
And there I was, standing on a yacht between an older couple. The man had my nose. The woman had my exact smile.
"My parents," I said, my voice cracking.
"The former CEOs," Adrian answered. "They died in a private jet crash two years ago. They spent their last year alive funneling millions into private investigators to find you."
I traced the glass over my mother's face. No car crash. No shared tragedy.
"Nathan lied to me," I muttered.
"About everything," Adrian agreed. "You are not Evelyn Carter. You are Evelyn Sterling."
Flashes of memory sparked in my brain. Crowded boardrooms. Armored diamond shipments. The sharp smell of espresso brewing in this exact office. The familiarity was undeniable, settling deep into my bones.
"I need to go home," I said, turning away from the wall.
"To him?" Adrian stepped into my path.
"I need to look him in the eye," I insisted. "I need to know if the man I've lived with for three years is a complete monster."

I walked through the front door of the house just as the grandfather clock struck six.
"Evie? Is that you?"
Nathan emerged from the kitchen. He held a bouquet of white lilies.
"I brought your favorite," he smiled, pressing the flowers into my hands.
I stared at his warm, handsome face. "Thank you."
He leaned down and kissed my cheek. "You look exhausted. Did you walk all the way to the clinic and back?"
"Yes." I gripped the green stems. "The doctor said I'm perfectly fine."
"See?" Nathan wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me against his chest. "I told you there was nothing to worry about. I'll always take care of you."
His heartbeat thumped steadily against my ear. He sounded so genuine. He felt so safe.
Doubt crept into my mind. Could Adrian have fabricated the office? Was it an elaborate trick? Nathan was always so gentle.
"I'm going to run a hot bath for you," Nathan murmured, rubbing my lower back. "Rest tonight. I have a late shift at the office tomorrow anyway."
"Okay," I agreed softly.

The next afternoon, I pushed open the heavy glass doors of Nathan's marketing firm.
The receptionist's desk sat empty. I walked down the carpeted hallway toward his corner office to surprise him.
"Fuck, Nathan, right there!"
A woman's loud moan echoed through the cracked mahogany door.
I stopped dead in my tracks.
"Take my fucking cock deeper, Chloe," Nathan growled.
I stepped closer to the gap in the door frame.
Nathan sat in his leather desk chair. His dress pants were shoved down to his ankles. His secretary, Chloe Bennett, straddled his lap. Her tight pencil skirt was hiked up around her waist, and her bare breasts bounced aggressively as she rode him.
"I'm taking it all, Nathan," Chloe panted, gripping his shoulders. "God, you're fucking huge. Ram it into my pussy."
Nathan grabbed her hips, slamming her down onto his erection. "Fuck yes. Spread your legs wider. Let me see my cock sliding into you."
A wet, slapping sound filled the office.
I pressed my hand against the wall. No tears came. Instead, a dry, hollow laugh clawed up my throat.
"You feel so much better than your wife," Chloe gasped, tossing her head back.
Nathan sneered, his hands squeezing her bare ass. "I used to think I really loved Evelyn, but without her title as the Sterling heir, she's no different from a regular housewife."
Chloe ground her hips in a tight circle. "Then why don't you send her back to her parents?"
Nathan laughed, a cruel, ugly sound that matched the violent thrust of his hips. "You don't get it. A former high-and-mighty heiress is now looking after my kid and serving my mom every day. I just have to comfort her occasionally, and she's completely devoted."
"Fuck, that's twisted," Chloe moaned, her fingernails digging into his neck.
"The feeling is too addictive," Nathan continued, grunting as he picked up his pace. "Taking care of a kid is so exhausting, how could I let you do that? You just need to serve me well."
"I'll serve your fucking cock all day," Chloe whimpered.
"Good girl. Now ride me until I cum."
I didn't wait to watch them finish.
I backed away from the door, my sneakers completely silent on the carpet.
The illusion shattered into a million pieces. The man who kissed my forehead and brought me lilies was a sadistic warden who stole my life for a sick power trip.
I pulled my phone from my pocket and walked out of the building.
The cold city wind hit my face. I dialed the number on the black business card.
He answered on the first ring.
"Adrian." My voice was entirely steady. No panic. No confusion.
"Evelyn," he replied. "Are you ready?"
I stared up at the towering glass skyscrapers of the city I used to own.
"Help me take back the life that belongs to me."
"Consider it done," Adrian said, the gravel in his tone sharpening into a weapon. "Where do we start?"
