The corporate boardroom became a chamber of torment. After My Husband Chose My Stepsister’s Baby Over Me Chapter 1

The quarterly board meeting ran long. Two hours of Lincoln presenting my slides as his vision. Two hours of watching him straighten his cufflinks before each answer, that nervous tic he'd polished into a power move. Two hours of men nodding at strategies I'd built at three in the morning while my stomach bled.

I left early. Told his assistant I had a migraine. No one questioned it. No one ever did.

The penthouse was quiet when I got home. Lincoln's shoes by the door. His jacket on the chair. The late afternoon light came through the windows in long gold bars, the kind of light my mother used to say made everything look like a promise.

I walked past the living room toward our bedroom, my heels silent on the marble. That's when I saw it — Amalia's suite, door half-open. The bathroom light on.

I should have kept walking.

I stopped instead. Looked in.

The vanity was cluttered the way Amalia always kept it — makeup scattered, perfume bottles catching light. But there, next to the sink, a prescription bottle. Prenatal vitamins. And clipped to it with a pink paperclip, an OB appointment card. Dr. Sarah Chen. Mount Sinai. Next Thursday at two.

Beside the card, face-up like someone had been staring at it, a sonogram printout.

I stepped inside. Picked it up.

The image was grainy, black and white, the way they all are. A small shape in the center. Eight weeks, the text said. Patient: Amalia Mendez.

I set it back down exactly where I'd found it.

My thumb pressed hard against the inside of my wrist. An old habit. Pressure point. Ground yourself. Don't let them see.

I walked out. Closed the door. Went to my room and changed out of my suit. Put on jeans and a sweater. Washed my face. Looked at myself in the mirror.

I looked exactly the same.

That evening, I found Lincoln in the study. He was on his laptop, tie loosened, scrolling through something that made him frown. He looked up when I came in. Smiled. "Hey. Feeling better?"

"Is Amalia pregnant with your child?"

The smile died. He closed the laptop slowly. Didn't answer.

Before he could speak, the study door opened.

My father stepped in. Francisco Mendez, silver-haired and apologetic even in his posture. He looked at Lincoln. Lincoln looked at him. And I understood immediately — this was staged.

"Sienna," my father said gently. "We need to talk."

I stayed standing. "Go ahead."

Lincoln stood too, came around the desk. "It's complicated."

"Is she pregnant?"

"Yes," Lincoln said.

I waited.

My father cleared his throat. "We've been discussing how to handle this. For the family. For the company."

"Handle it," I repeated.

Lincoln's jaw tightened. "The optics are a problem. If this gets out the wrong way, the stock price tanks. Investors pull out. Everything we've built—"

"Everything I've built," I said quietly.

He blinked. Kept going. "We need to register the baby under my legitimate family line. Publicly, it's our child. Yours and mine. Amalia stays in the background. It protects everyone."

"Think of the family," my father added. His voice had that warm, pleading quality he always used when he wanted me to be the bigger person. "Your mother would have wanted us to stay together."

I looked at him. Really looked. The man who brought his mistress's daughter into our house three days after my mother's funeral. The man who gave Amalia the master bedroom and told me it was temporary.

"Amalia's condition makes this harder," Lincoln said. "She's fragile. The pregnancy is high-risk. She needs support. Stability."

I turned back to him. "Is there anything else?"

They both looked relieved. Francisco smiled. Lincoln's shoulders dropped. "No. That's it. We just need you on board."

"Okay," I said.

Lincoln blinked. "Okay?"

"I understand." I looked at my father. "Is there anything else you need from me tonight?"

"No," he said, almost laughing with relief. "No, sweetheart. Thank you for being reasonable."

I left the study. Took the elevator down to the garage. Got in my car.

My hands shook on the steering wheel. I gripped it until they stopped. Pressed my thumb against my wrist until the pressure turned white.

Then I opened my phone. Scrolled to a contact I hadn't used in seven years. Margaret Ellison. My mother's estate attorney.

She answered on the second ring. "Sienna?"

"Margaret." My voice came out steady. Calm. "Activate the clause."

A pause. Then her voice, quiet and sure: "Confirmed. Six days, starting now."

I ended the call. Started the engine. Drove out into the Manhattan night with the music off and the windows down.

The next morning, I came to breakfast at my usual time. Lincoln was already there, coffee in hand, scrolling his phone. He looked up when I sat down. Watched me pour tea.

"About last night," he started.

I looked at him. Waited.

"I know it's a lot to process," he said. "But I think we should have a family dinner. You, me, Amalia, your father. Normalize things going forward."

I took a sip of tea. "That sounds fine."

He blinked. "Yeah?"

"Of course."

His whole body relaxed. He smiled. Texted someone under the table — my father, probably. His shoulders lost their tension. He reached across and squeezed my hand. "Thank you. I knew you'd understand."

I squeezed back. Ate my toast at the precise interval my stomach required. Said nothing that anyone would remember.

The family dinner was Friday night. Amalia wore pale blue, soft lighting from the candles catching her face just right. She smiled tremulously when I arrived. "Sienna. Thank you for coming."

"Of course," I said.

We sat. Ate. Amalia spoke in that breathless, trailing register she always used. "I never meant to cause trouble. I don't deserve any of this. I just want us to be a real family."

My father beamed. Poured wine. "To family."

Lincoln's hand rested on Amalia's shoulder. Proprietary. Tender.

I asked Amalia about her prenatal appointments. She answered, eyes wide and grateful. I made eye contact with Lincoln twice during the meal. Both times, I held it just long enough that he looked away first.

Afterward, I drove home alone. Sat in the parking garage for eleven minutes, hands on the wheel, thumb pressed white against my wrist.

Five days left.
