Chapter 2

"Kidnapped?" I shoved the wrapped box harder against my ribs, creating a physical barrier between us. "My husband didn't kidnap me. He loves me. He takes care of me."

"He's a warden," the stranger countered, his gaze sweeping over my simple wool coat. "My name is Adrian Hayes. I am the Special Assistant to the CEO of Sterling Jewelry Group."

I let out a harsh, nervous laugh. "Sterling Jewelry? I buy my earrings from a mall kiosk."

"You own the mall." Adrian stepped closer, forcing me to tilt my head up to maintain eye contact. "You aren't a suburban housewife, Evelyn. You are the sole heir to the Sterling empire."

"You have the wrong person. Now move out of my way."

"Three years ago, you vanished." Adrian ignored my command, his voice rising over the street traffic. "You left a single letter on your desk claiming you were eloping with a lover. We didn't buy it. The company spent the last thirty-six months tearing the globe apart for you."

"I was in a car accident!" I yelled, drawing a quick glance from a mother near the gates. I lowered my volume to a frantic whisper. "I have amnesia. I have a family. A mother-in-law who hates my coffee and a three-year-old son who needs this watch."

Adrian reached into his coat. I flinched, bracing for a weapon.

He only produced a sleek, black business card. He held it out.

"Take it."

"No."

He reached forward and slipped the card into the pocket of my coat. His knuckles brushed my fabric, sending a cold jolt through my stomach.

"I won't drag you away screaming," Adrian murmured. "But you need to wake up. This life is a cage."

He turned his back to me and began walking toward a black sedan idling at the curb.

Relief washed over me. I took a step toward the school doors.

"One more thing."

Adrian stopped halfway to the car. He glanced over his shoulder.

"What?" I snapped.

"Your son." His eyes narrowed, pinning me in place. "Are you absolutely certain he's your child?"

My jaw tightened. Before I could hurl an insult at him, Adrian slid into the sedan. The tinted windows rolled up, and the car sped away, leaving me alone on the cracked pavement.

I dropped the gift off at the front office without speaking to anyone. The walk home passed in a blur of gray sidewalks and dead autumn leaves.

By dinnertime, the dining room felt like a suffocating box.

Nathan carved the roast beef at the head of the table. Margaret swirled her red wine, complaining about the country club's new dress code.

I didn't hear a word she said.

My gaze remained fixed on Mark. He sat in his booster seat, happily mashing peas into his potatoes. He had Nathan's dark brown hair. He had Nathan's square jawline.

Did he have anything of mine? My nose? My eye shape? I searched his three-year-old face for any trace of myself and found nothing.

"Evie?" Nathan touched my wrist. "You've barely touched your food. Is the meat too tough?"

I yanked my arm back. The sudden movement rattled the silverware against the porcelain plates.

Margaret scoffed. "She's probably exhausted from her little stroll to the school. Such a strenuous day for our invalid."

"Mom. Drop it," Nathan warned, his tone sharp. He turned his attention back to me, his brow furrowing. "Are you feeling alright? You look pale."

"My head is pounding," I lied, forcing my hands to rest flat on my thighs. "I called the clinic this afternoon. Dr. Miller wants me to come in tonight for a quick scan."

Nathan dropped his carving knife. It clattered loudly against the platter. "I'll grab the keys."

"No." I stood up, pushing my chair back. It scraped harshly against the hardwood floor.

Nathan paused halfway out of his seat. "What do you mean, no?"

"I want to take a cab." I gripped the edge of the table to hide my trembling fingers. "Dr. Miller said I need to start doing things on my own. To rebuild my neural pathways."

"It's dark, Evelyn." Nathan frowned, his protective mask slipping into something rigid. "I don't want you out alone in the city."

"It's just to the clinic and back." I forced my voice to stay even, meeting his stare. "Please, Nathan. Let me do this. I need to feel normal."

He studied my face for a long, agonizing moment. The silence in the dining room stretched until my ears rang.

"Fine," Nathan finally conceded. He sat back down. "Call me the second you leave the lobby. If you aren't home by nine, I'm coming to get you."

"Thank you."

I grabbed my purse from the hallway and walked out the front door. The black business card burned like a hot coal in my coat pocket.

The waiting room at the women's health clinic was entirely empty. Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting a sickly yellow glow over the linoleum floor.

"Mrs. Carter?"

Dr. Miller stood in the hallway doorway, holding a digital tablet. She wore pink scrubs and a tired smile.

I followed her into Examination Room 3 and sat on the crinkly paper covering the table.

"Your file says you requested a full physical," Dr. Miller noted, tapping her screen. "Are you experiencing pain?"

"No." I gripped the edge of the exam table. "I need an ultrasound. A pelvic exam. Everything."

Dr. Miller raised an eyebrow. "That's quite comprehensive for a walk-in appointment. Are we looking for something specific?"

"I need to know about my pregnancy."

"Your pregnancy?" She tapped her screen a few more times. "Are you trying to conceive?"

"No. I need you to check the physical evidence of my past pregnancy. With my son."

The doctor's friendly demeanor shifted into clinical confusion. "Alright. Put on the gown. I'll step out for a moment."

The next twenty minutes were a blur of cold gel, humming machines, and uncomfortable pressure. I stared at the ceiling tiles, counting the tiny perforations to keep my panic at bay.

*Are you absolutely certain he's your child?*

Adrian Hayes's gravelly voice echoed in my skull. I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to block it out.

Finally, the machines powered down. Dr. Miller handed me a towel.

"Get dressed," she instructed, her tone unusually flat. "I'll be right back."

I wiped the gel from my stomach and pulled my clothes back on. My hands shook so violently I could barely button my jeans.

The door opened. Dr. Miller walked in, holding a printed chart. She didn't sit down.

"Is everything okay?" I asked, my throat tight.

"Physically, you are perfectly healthy, Evelyn." She crossed her arms over her chest. "But there is a massive misunderstanding here."

"What kind of misunderstanding?"

"Who told you that you had a child?"

The room seemed to tilt. "My husband. I have a three-year-old son. I was in a car accident right after he was born. I lost my memory."

Dr. Miller shook her head slowly. "That is medically impossible."

"Maybe I had a C-section while I was unconscious?" I offered, desperate for an explanation. "Maybe the accident..."

"There is no scar," Dr. Miller interrupted, her voice firm. "Your uterus shows zero signs of expansion. Your cervix has never dilated."

"You're wrong."

"I have been an OBGYN for two decades, Evelyn." She stepped closer, lowering her voice. "Your body has never experienced pregnancy. You have never given birth."

I stared at her, the words crashing over me like freezing water.

No pregnancy. No birth.

"Are you absolutely certain?" I whispered.

"I am positive." She placed a hand on my shoulder. "Evelyn, do you need me to call the police? Are you safe at home?"

I couldn't answer. The buzzing of the fluorescent lights grew deafening.

If Mark wasn't my son...

Then who was the man sleeping in my bed every night?
