Breaking Free: Luna's Betrayal and Redemption
Chapter 2
The celebration finally ended near midnight. I stood on our bedroom balcony, staring at the silver moon that hung like a silent witness to my unraveling world. The cool night air did nothing to soothe the burning in my chest.
'He's coming,' Selene warned inside me. My inner wolf had been restless all evening, pacing and growling since we'd intercepted that damning mind-link.
I heard Alexander's heavy footsteps in the hallway. Without turning, I sensed him pause at the doorway, his Alpha presence filling the room like a physical force.
'Victoria.' His voice was gentle, concerned. 'Are you feeling better?'
I turned, forcing my face into a mask of calm. 'Just tired from the celebration.'
He approached, reaching to brush a strand of hair from my face. I fought the urge to flinch away from his touch. This hand had caressed Madison just yesterday.
'You should rest,' he said. 'I need to review some territory reports with Marcus. Don't wait up.'
Another lie. How many had there been? How long had I been blind?
After he left, I waited fifteen minutes before moving to his study. As Luna, I had access to all pack communications—at least, I was supposed to. I logged into the central system, navigating to the message archives.
My fingers trembled as I searched Alexander's private communications with Madison. Nothing. Frowning, I expanded the search parameters. Still nothing. I checked the system logs and found what I was looking for: dozens of deleted message threads between Alexander and Madison, systematically erased over the past three months.
'He's hiding evidence,' Selene snarled. 'Covering his tracks.'
I leaned back in the chair, a cold clarity washing over me. This wasn't a momentary lapse or a single indiscretion. This was calculated. Deliberate.
I shut down the system and returned to our bedroom, my movements mechanical. On the chair lay Alexander's ceremonial coat from the celebration. I picked it up, intending to hang it in the closet, when Selene suddenly became alert.
'Smell it,' she urged.
I brought the fabric to my nose, inhaling deeply. Beneath Alexander's familiar pine and smoke scent was something else—a distinctive floral-herb fragrance I recognized immediately as Madison's. But there was something more, something that made my stomach twist painfully—the subtle, unmistakable undercurrent of pup pheromones.
The coat slipped from my fingers, pooling on the floor like spilled secrets. Madison wasn't just his lover. She was carrying his child—the child he had promised me we would never have. The child that would be his heir, while I remained the barren Luna who had sacrificed her own dreams of motherhood for his ambitions.
I sank to the edge of the bed, my legs no longer able to support me. The betrayal was complete, absolute. Five years of devotion reduced to ashes in a single day.
A soft knock at the door pulled me from my thoughts. I quickly wiped away any trace of tears and called, 'Enter.'
Jason, one of our Delta warriors, stood awkwardly in the doorway, his eyes downcast. 'Luna Victoria, forgive the late hour.'
'What is it, Jason?'
He shifted uncomfortably, glancing over his shoulder before stepping inside and closing the door. 'There's something I've been wanting to tell you, but I've been afraid.'
The young warrior's hands trembled slightly. 'Three weeks ago, I was on dawn patrol. I saw Madison Chen being escorted to the Alpha wing by Gamma Roberts. She was... disheveled. They didn't see me, but Roberts was telling her to be more careful, that they couldn't risk anyone finding out.'
My face remained impassive, though inside, Selene howled with rage. 'Thank you for telling me, Jason.'
'I should have come sooner,' he said, shame evident in his voice. 'But Roberts is my superior, and Madison has been telling everyone she has the Alpha's special favor.'
After Jason left, I stood motionless in the center of the room. Three separate confirmations of Alexander's betrayal in a single day. The mind-link. The scent. The witness. There was no more room for denial, no possibility of misunderstanding.
I moved to the window, gazing out at the territory that had been my home for five years. The pack that had become my family. The life I had built around a lie.
'What will you do?' Selene asked, her voice uncharacteristically gentle.
I watched as a cloud passed over the moon, momentarily dimming its light. When it emerged again, my decision was made.
'We're leaving,' I whispered. 'But first, we make sure he never forgets what he threw away.'
