Hana never planned to fall into the world of Kang Jae-Hyun.
She was just a struggling young woman trying to support her family when a single mistake brought her face-to-face with Seoul's coldest and most powerful CEO. What began as a contract - a fake engagement meant to satisfy a ruthless family and protect a fragile empire - quickly turns into something far more dangerous.
Behind Jae-Hyun's flawless image lies grief, pressure, and a heart he locked away long ago. Behind Hana's warm smile is quiet resilience and scars she never talks about.
As secrets surface, enemies close in, and the line between pretend and real begins to blur, Hana must decide:
Was this relationship ever just business - or was it always fate?
A slow-burn romance filled with tension, secrets, and a love that wasn't supposed to happen.
Beneath the billonaire's gaze Chapter 1
Lee Hana stood across the street from the towering glass structure, her fingers tightening around the stack of files pressed against her chest.
JH Group Headquarters.
The building pierced the sky like a silent declaration of dominance—steel, glass, and power wrapped into one intimidating monument. Employees streamed in and out with practiced confidence, dressed in sharp suits and polished shoes, as if they belonged to this world.
Hana did not.
She swallowed hard, forcing herself to breathe.
It’s just one day, she reminded herself. Just one.
If her cousin Minji hadn’t called in sick at the last minute, Hana would be nowhere near this place. Minji had begged her over the phone, voice weak and apologetic, insisting it was only a temporary secretary position—easy work, no pressure. Just answer calls, organize documents, and stay invisible.
But now, standing before the headquarters of one of the most powerful conglomerates in the country, Hana felt painfully visible.
She adjusted her modest blouse, smoothed her skirt, and crossed the street.
The lobby was vast and gleaming, marble floors reflecting the light from the chandelier above. The air smelled faintly of expensive cologne and freshly brewed coffee. Hana’s heels clicked nervously as she approached the reception desk.
The receptionist barely glanced at her, scanning her name before sliding a visitor’s badge across the counter.
“Top floor,” she said curtly.
Hana nodded and headed toward the elevator, her heart pounding harder with each step.
Inside the elevator, she stared at her reflection in the mirrored walls. Her face looked pale, eyes wide with nerves. She didn’t belong here—she knew that. But today, she had no choice.
The elevator chimed softly as it reached the top floor.
Taking a deep breath, Hana stepped out and followed the signs toward the CEO’s office. With every step, Minji’s hurried instructions echoed in her head.
Don’t mess up. Don’t bother the boss. And whatever you do—do not draw attention.
Easy enough.
The office door was wide open.
Inside, Kang Jae-Hyun sat behind a massive mahogany desk, eyes fixed on the computer screen in front of him. Even seated, his presence dominated the room. He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, his posture rigid, composed, and unmistakably authoritative.
Hana hesitated at the threshold.
This was Kang Jae-Hyun—the billionaire CEO of JH Group. The man tabloids described as ruthless, cold, and untouchable. The man rumored to have built his empire with merciless precision.
She cleared her throat softly.
“Good morning, Mr. Kang,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “I’m… I’m Minji’s cousin. I’ll be filling in for her today.”
He didn’t look up.
“I don’t have time for distractions,” he said flatly.
The words struck her like ice.
“Yes, sir,” Hana replied quickly.
She stepped forward, balancing a tray that held a cup of freshly brewed coffee and a stack of documents. Her palms were slightly damp, her grip unsteady. She placed the files carefully on the edge of his desk and turned to leave, eager to disappear into the background.
That was when disaster struck.
Her heel caught on the edge of the carpet.
Time slowed.
The tray tilted. The coffee cup slipped from her fingers, spinning helplessly through the air. Hana’s breath caught in her throat as she reached out instinctively, but it was too late.
The cup tipped.
Boiling black coffee splashed forward.
Straight onto Kang Jae-Hyun’s chest.
The liquid spread across his crisp white shirt, staining it instantly.
Silence.
The room seemed to freeze.
Hana stared in horror as the dark stain bloomed across his chest, her mind blanking completely.
“I—!” Her voice cracked. “I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to—please don’t fire me! I’m not even supposed to be here, technically—”
Kang Jae-Hyun slowly rose from his chair.
He picked up a handkerchief from his desk and dabbed calmly at his shirt, his movements controlled, almost unnervingly so. His dark eyes finally lifted to meet hers.
Cold. Sharp. Unreadable.
“You’re not Minji,” he said.
Hana nodded frantically. “No, sir. I’m her cousin. Well—technically we’re not related by blood, but she’s like a sister to me and she’s sick and I swear this won’t happen again—”
“Enough.”
One word.
Her mouth snapped shut instantly.
He studied her for a long moment, as if weighing something unseen. Then, unexpectedly, the corner of his lips twitched—barely noticeable, but unmistakable.
“What’s your name?” he asked.
“Lee Hana,” she replied softly.
His gaze lingered. “You’re bold.”
Her brows furrowed. “I—what?”
“Most people would already be crying.”
She swallowed. “Only because I’m scared.”
For a brief second, something flickered in his eyes.
He let out a short, quiet chuckle—so quick she almost wondered if she imagined it.
“You’ll do,” he said.
Hana blinked. “…Do?”
“For now,” he replied, turning back to his desk. “Sit down. We have work.”
Still stunned, Hana took a seat at the side desk, her heart racing. The rest of the day passed in a blur of paperwork, phone calls, and document sorting. Despite her nerves, she worked carefully, determined not to make another mistake.
Hours later, after organizing the final batch of documents, Hana stood and approached his desk again.
“These are the files you asked me to sort,” she said, placing them neatly in front of him.
Kang Jae-Hyun skimmed through them, his eyes sharp, missing nothing.
“Good,” he said.
Relief washed over her.
Then he glanced at the clock.
“Go home. It’s late.”
Hana hesitated. “Yes, sir.”
She turned to leave, then paused when his voice stopped her.
“Come back in three days.”
She turned back, surprised. “Why, sir?”
His gaze lifted, locking onto hers with quiet authority.
“Follow my instructions,” he said coolly. “Without question.”
“Yes, sir,” Hana replied.
She left the office with her heart pounding, unaware that a single spilled cup of coffee had just changed the course of her life forever.

My fiancé always told me he loved me. But not long after our engagement, I woke up suffocating in the dark.
He was pressing a pillow over my face, his eyes cold and dead, while my half-sister stood by watching with fake pity.
They had orchestrated everything just to steal my trust fund.
It all started with a massive hotel scandal. They had drugged me, thrown a cheap escort into my bed, and brought a mob of paparazzi to ruin my reputation.
When my fiancé broke through the crowd, playing the heartbroken victim, he knelt down with a massive diamond ring.
"I know things have been hard, but I love you. If you come home with me, I will forgive all of this."
In my past life, I cried tears of gratitude and let him slide that ring onto my finger.
That ring sealed my death warrant. I lost my company, my dignity, and eventually, my life.
Until my lungs burned and my heart stopped, I didn't understand.
How could the people I trusted most plot my murder so ruthlessly?
Why did they have to tear my entire life apart?
Opening my eyes again, I was back on the morning of the hotel scandal, exactly one year ago.
But the man lying bare-backed in my bed wasn't a random escort.
It was Johnathan Chase, my family's biggest corporate rival and the most ruthless predator on Wall Street.
Listening to the paparazzi pounding on the door, I smiled coldly.

After an exhausting fourteen-hour flight, Katia returned to her Upper East Side penthouse, expecting the quiet comfort of the life she had built.
Instead, she found a pair of familiar red stilettos in the foyer and her fiancé, Caleb, tangled in their bedsheets with his twenty-two-year-old assistant.
She didn't scream or cry. She simply took off her three-carat engagement ring, threw it at his bare chest, and demanded he buy out her half of the penthouse by Friday.
Seeking to numb the sickening disgust, she got blackout drunk and crashed at a luxury hotel, accidentally stumbling into the wrong suite.
Thinking the imposing man inside was a high-end escort hired by her friend, she threw him over her shoulder and spent a wild night with him.
The next morning, she left five thousand dollars on his nightstand with a lipstick-stained note.
"Good Job."
For six years, she had funded Caleb's dreams and built his startup from the ground up, only to be treated like a lifeless ATM.
With ruthless precision, she spent the next two months systematically bankrupting his company, cutting off his venture capital, and erasing his life's work.
She felt no heartbreak, only a cold, calculating need to cleanse herself of his betrayal.
But when Katia finally returned to corporate headquarters to co-lead a massive merger, she literally crashed into the new Vice President.
Strong arms caught her waist, and the sharp scent of cedarwood and whiskey hit her like a freight train.
"You came back," Jackson whispered, his eyes burning as he stared at the woman who had treated him like a cheap gigolo.

On the morning of our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, I found a cream-colored document tucked inside my husband's suit pocket.
It was a twenty-million-dollar asset transfer for his former receptionist, Carmen. But what made my blood run cold was the contingent beneficiary: Leo, my newborn son who the hospital claimed was kidnapped twenty-three years ago.
When I confronted Devonte, he didn't even try to explain. He handed me a fake Cartier watch, canceled all my credit cards, and publicly called me delusional.
The next day, he moved Carmen into our mansion and emptied all our joint accounts into offshore trusts.
"If you don't sign these papers and walk away, I will have you committed," he threatened, his mother nodding in agreement.
They had orchestrated the kidnapping of my baby, hiding him with the mistress while I spent half my life sedated and screaming in grief. Now, to keep his secret, Devonte was going to lock me in a psychiatric ward and bury me in debt.
I didn't understand how the man I loved could be such a monster. Why did he steal my child? What else was hidden in that confidential adoption file?
Pushed to the absolute brink, I refused to be his victim.
When his goons came to my temporary apartment to drag me away, I turned to the rugged union electrician who had just fixed my lights.
"If you need a husband to keep you out of a psych ward, I'll marry you," he said, offering himself as my legal shield.
I took his hand. It was time to tear my husband's perfect life apart.
