Apocalypse rebirth: My ex begged outside my fortress Chapter 1

The smell of burning flesh and wet ash filled the air. Red puddles formed in the cracked concrete.

Elena stumbled forward. Her left boot was torn open, exposing a bleeding heel to the sharp gravel.

With every step she took, a sharp, white-hot agony flared in her chest. Three of her ribs were completely snapped, grinding against each other whenever she drew a breath.

Her left shoulder hung uselessly at her side, dislocated and throbbing with a dull, sickening heat.

She had not eaten a real meal in four days. Her stomach felt like it was eating itself, and her throat was as dry as dust.

Yet, looking at the massive steel gates rising through the smoke ahead, a weak smile broke through the dirt and dried blood on her face.

"We're finally there..." she whispered, her voice barely loud.

On her right shoulder, she carried the heavy, limp body of Ryan. His arms hung over her neck, his breathing shallow against her ear.

He was completely unconscious, a dead weight pulling her down toward the earth. But she refused to fall. Not when they were standing right in front of Humanity's Last Sanctuary.

The massive wall was high into the stormy clouds, a symbol of safety, peace, and a future.

They had survived the end of the world. They were safe.

Elena adjusted her grip on Ryan, gasping as the movement sent a fresh wave of pain through her broken ribs.

She looked down at his pale face. Five years. They had survived five years in this living nightmare, and she had kept him alive through all of it.

She remembered the first year of the collapse, when a falling wall had crushed Ryan's leg. He had cried out in agony, unable to walk.

Elena did not hesitate. She had hoisted him onto her back and carried him for three days straight through a city crawling with monsters, never stopping to rest until they found a hidden basement.

When a deadly fever took hold of him, she had done the unthinkable. She walked into a dangerous black market camp and traded her mother's gold wedding ring, the absolute last memory of her family, just to buy a single bottle of antibiotics.

"Eat it, Ryan. I'm not hungry," she had told him night after night, handing over the tiny scraps of stale bread she managed to scavenge.

She would sit in the corner of whatever ruined room they hid in, pressing her hands against her growling stomach, watching him eat every single crumb.

Ryan was always "too weak" to fight the monsters. He was too gentle for this cruel world. So, she became the shield.

She volunteered for the most dangerous scavenging missions, entering dark, pitch-black warehouses filled with growling creatures while Ryan stayed safely hidden in a closet.

When the brutal winter came and the snow piled high outside, there was only one small room with a functional heater.

"You stay inside where it's warm," she had insisted, pushing him toward the heat. She had wrapped herself in a single, thin blanket and slept outside on the frozen dirt floor, shivering so violently her teeth chipped, just so he wouldn't catch a cold.

And then came the day he was bitten on the arm. The black veins of the virus were creeping up his skin. Elena did not panic.

She tied a tight cloth around his shoulder, grabbed a rusted hunting knife, and used her own hands to cut the infected flesh completely off his arm.

She ignored his screams, focusing only on saving him, even though the horror and exhaustion nearly caused her own heart to stop.

She saved him every single time. She had given him her food, her blood, her youth, and her safety. Because she loved him more than her own life.

Elena dragged her bleeding feet across the final stretch of mud, reaching the heavy iron checkpoint at the base of the sanctuary's wall.

Dozens of heavily armed soldiers stood behind thick metal barricades, their rifles pointed directly at her.

Suddenly, a loud tone blared from the speakers mounted on the wall.

The sound was cold and completely devoid of human emotion.

[System Announcement: Scanning survivors. Access restricted. Only Awakened may enter Humanity's Last Sanctuary.]

Elena froze. "Awakened?" she thought. "I'm just a normal human. I never gained special powers. But Ryan... Ryan doesn't have them either. What do we do?"

Before panic could completely take over her mind, the heavy weight on her back suddenly shifted.

Ryan slid off her shoulders.

Elena expected him to collapse onto the muddy ground in his weak state. Instead, he landed perfectly on both feet. He stood completely upright, his posture straight and confident.

Elena blinked away the rain, staring at his legs. The leg that had been "ruined" five years ago, the leg that supposedly made it impossible for him to walk or scavenge, did not shake at all.

He stood perfectly fine. He was pretending the entire time.

"Ryan?" Elena stammered, her voice trembling. "Your... your leg?"

Before he could answer, a small side door in the massive steel gate clicked open. A young woman stepped out into the rain.

Elena's breath caught in her throat. It was Sophia. But Sophia did not look like someone who had lived through the apocalypse.

Her hair was perfectly clean, her skin was pale and unblemished, and she wore a spotless, expensive winter coat.

Sophia walked directly past the soldiers, a bright smile on her lips. She walked right up to Ryan and wrapped her slender fingers tightly around his hand.

Ryan did not pull away. Instead, he laced his fingers through hers, pulling her close.

Elena froze completely. The cold rain poured over her face, but she felt entirely numb.

The intense pain in her dislocated shoulder and broken ribs suddenly vanished, replaced by a freezing, hollow void in her chest.

"What... what is happening?" she whispered, her eyes darting between their joined hands.

Ryan looked down at Elena.

The warmth, the gentleness, and the gratitude she had seen in his eyes for the past five years were completely gone.

His gaze was colder than the winter snow. A small, mocking smile curled up the corners of his lips.

"Thank you for bringing me here," Ryan said calmly.

Elena stepped forward, reaching out with her one good hand. "Ryan, I don't understand. Who is she? Why are you standing? We need to get inside, the monsters are..."

"Soldiers," Ryan interrupted, his voice cutting through the sound of the rain like a sharp blade. He looked at the guards standing behind the barricade.

"Throw her toward the horde."

Elena let out a short, breathy laugh. The sound was hysterical, bubbling up from her throat against her will.

"That's... that's a good joke, Ryan. Stop it. It's not funny. Tell the soldiers to let us in. I carried you all this way..." She waited for him to smile, to laugh, to tell her it was just a sick prank to ease the tension of reaching safety.

But Ryan didn't laugh. He reached up to his collar and pulled out a silver necklace. It was a simple, cheap chain holding a small silver ring.

Elena had scavenged it from a ruined jewelry store years ago, nearly losing her eye to a monster just to get it for his birthday. He had promised to never take it off.

Ryan ripped the necklace from his neck and tossed it carelessly into the mud right in front of Elena's boots.

Then, he raised his foot and stepped directly on it, grinding the silver ring deep into the filthy dirt.

"I never loved you," Ryan said.

Sophia burst into a loud, mocking laugh, the sound ringing in Elena's ears like a siren.

"Oh my god, look at her face! You really believed he loved you? You stupid, pathetic girl."

Sophia leaned her head against Ryan's shoulder, looking down at Elena with pure amusement.

"Ryan and I have been together for six years. We were together long before the world fell apart."

Elena's mind shattered. "Six years?" she thought. "But we started dating five years ago... right when the world ended. He told me I was his everything."

"Do you want to know why he stayed with you all this time?" Sophia sneered, twisting a lock of her clean hair around her finger.

"Because you were useful. Before the apocalypse, you earned all the money. You owned that beautiful house. You had a massive inheritance waiting for you. And when the world ended, you turned out to be the perfect little guard dog. You were strong enough to fight, strong enough to find food, and stupid enough to give it all away. You were nothing more than a tool to keep us alive until we reached the sanctuary."

Elena shook her head frantically, tears finally spilling over her eyelids, burning hot against her cold skin.

"No... no, that's not true. Ryan, tell her she's lying! I starved for you! I almost died for you!"

Ryan looked down at her, his eyes completely dead. He didn't show a single hint of guilt.

"Every bowl of food you skipped?" Ryan said, his voice dripping with cruelty. "Sophia ate it. I took the food you gave me, waited until you went to sleep in the cold, and brought it straight to Sophia's hiding place."

Elena gasped, the air leaving her lungs as if she had been stabbed.

"Every medicine you found?" Ryan continued, tilting his head. "I gave it to her. Sophia had a weak immune system, you see. She needed those antibiotics much more than I did. Your mother's ring bought her life, not mine."

Elena's hands began to shake violently in the mud. The memories of her shivering in the snow, her stomach screaming in hunger, her skin being torn apart by monsters... all of it flashed before her eyes.

She had done it all for him. She had ruined her body, given up her humanity, all to keep him alive.

"And every time you almost died..." Ryan smiled, a soft, sickening chuckle escaping his lips as he looked at Sophia. "...we laughed."

That single line completely destroyed whatever was left of Elena's soul. The physical pain of her broken bones was nothing compared to the roaring, agonizing blackness that swallowed her heart.

Everything she suffered... every drop of blood she spilled... it was all a joke to them.

She hadn't been saving a human being. She had been bleeding herself dry to feed the two monsters standing right in front of her.

She had sacrificed everything for absolutely nothing.

Elena lay on her knees, completely broken, unable to even lift her head. The tears wouldn't stop falling, completely blinding her.

Two soldiers stepped forward and violently grabbed Elena by her broken shoulders. She gasps in agony, her knees buckling, but they didn't care.

Ryan stepped forward. Without a single trace of hesitation, he raised his heavy combat boot and kicked her violently right in the chest, directly against her three broken ribs.

The bones shattered completely. Elena flew backward from the force of the kick, crashing through the wooden outer barricade of the checkpoint.

The soldiers didn't move a finger to stop her. They simply watched as her broken body rolled down the steep, muddy hill outside the sanctuary walls.

She rolled down and down, rocks and thorns tearing at her skin, until she crashed into the dark, foggy valley below the fortress.

The air down here was thick with the stench of death. From the deep shadows of the trees, a terrifying, blood-curdling screech echoed through the night. The ground trembled. It was the territory of a Zombie King.

Elena lay in the mud, unable to move a single muscle. Her body was a ruined shell, and her heart was completely dead. Through the blurring rain and the darkness, she looked up toward the top of the hill one last time.

Ryan stood at the edge of the bright, safe wall, holding Sophia close to his side. His cold voice carried down through the stormy wind, cutting through the shadows straight into her ears.

"Die knowing nobody ever chose you."

The darkness of the valley rushed in. Elena's eyes closed, and everything went black
