After the Divorce, My Billionaire Husband Wanted Me Again
Chapter 2
Emma woke to the sharp vibration of her phone, and before she even reached for it, she already knew the internet had turned last night’s humiliation into today’s entertainment.
She unlocked the screen, and dozens of notifications flooded in at once as headlines, videos, and photos from the charity gala covered every social media platform.
“Billionaire CEO’s Wife Publicly Demands Divorce.”
“Jealous Wife Causes Drama at Anniversary Gala.”
“Is Sophia Bennett the Real Mrs. Hayes?”
Emma stared at the screen without blinking because she had spent three years protecting Alexander’s reputation, yet it had taken strangers less than twelve hours to destroy hers.
She opened the comments, and the first one already had thousands of likes as someone wrote. “If he doesn’t love you anymore, just leave instead of embarrassing yourself.”
Another comment quickly followed, “Look at Sophia and Alexander together because they’re obviously in love, and Emma is just the bitter wife who can’t let go.”
Emma scrolled farther until another message made her thumb stop moving as someone typed, “Honestly, Sophia acts more like Mrs. Hayes than Emma ever did.”
She quietly locked her phone because reading another word wouldn’t change anything.
The silence didn’t last long before her best friend Mia called, and the moment Emma answered, Mia exploded with anger as she shouted. “Have you seen the damn internet because those people are completely insane.”
Emma leaned against the kitchen counter before replying calmly. “I saw enough.”
“They’re tearing you apart,” Mia snapped while struggling to calm herself, “and they’re making that snake Sophia look like some innocent angel.”
Emma closed her eyes for a second before whispering. “Let them.”
Mia fell silent because that wasn’t the answer she expected.
“You really aren’t going to fight back?”
Emma looked out the window at the bright morning sun before quietly answering, “I’ve spent three years fighting for a marriage that only I wanted, and I’m too tired to fight strangers.”
Across the city, television cameras crowded outside Hayes Group headquarters as reporters waited for Alexander to arrive.
Instead, Sophia stepped out of her car first.
Microphones immediately surrounded her, and although she pretended to look uncomfortable, the tiny smile hiding behind her expression betrayed her satisfaction.
“Miss Bennett,” one reporter asked excitedly, “is it true that Mr. Hayes and his wife are getting divorced?”
Sophia sighed softly before shaking her head.
“I really don’t think it’s my place to talk about their marriage.”
Another reporter quickly interrupted.
“But everyone saw what happened last night.”
Sophia lowered her eyes, looking almost sympathetic.
“Emma has always loved Alexander very deeply, and I think she’s just… emotional right now.”
“So you don’t blame her?”
“Of course not,” Sophia replied gently while hiding the victory dancing inside her heart, “she’s under a lot of pressure, and I only hope everyone treats her kindly.”
Within minutes, every news outlet posted the same headline.
“Sophia Bennett Defends Heartbroken Emma Carter.”
Comments flooded in even faster.
“Sophia is so classy.”
“No wonder Alexander likes her.”
“Future Mrs. Hayes is so elegant.”
By lunchtime, the nickname had spread everywhere.
The Future Mrs. Hayes.
Meanwhile, Alexander sat through a board meeting without hearing a single word anyone said because his thoughts kept returning to the way Emma smiled before walking away.
His assistant Ethan placed a tablet in front of him.
“Sir, the media coverage is getting worse.”
Alexander glanced at the headlines before frowning.
“Who approved Sophia’s interview?”
“No one.”
Alexander’s expression darkened.
“And Emma?”
“There hasn’t been any response.”
Not one interview, not one social media post.
Nothing.
For some reason,that bothered him.
Emma had always defended their marriage whenever rumors appeared.
Why was she silent now?
Back at the penthouse, Emma unlocked the front door and stepped inside.
The apartment looked exactly the same.
The same expensive furniture. The same crystal chandelier, the same cold silence.
She slowly walked upstairs and entered the master bedroom.
Her suitcase rested open on the bed.
She didn’t hesitate.
The first dress she folded was the blue one Alexander once said looked beautiful on her.
The second was the white dress she wore during their honeymoon.
The third was the black gown she bought for a business dinner Alexander canceled at the last minute.
She worked quietly because tears had become unnecessary.
Every dress reminded her of another promise.
Every promise reminded her of another disappointment.
She opened the jewelry drawer and carefully removed everything her parents had given her before the wedding.
She left behind every piece Alexander had bought.
Those belonged to his world, not hers.
Next came her books.
Her sketchbooks.
Her framed photographs.
The little ceramic coffee mug Alexander always joked was ugly.
The small indoor plants she watered every morning before he woke up.
Bit by bit,the apartment stopped looking like Emma lived there.
A moving company arrived shortly after noon.
One of the workers smiled politely.
“Mrs. Hayes, where would you like us to begin?”
Emma looked around the living room.
“Take everything that’s mine.”
The man nodded.
Several movers carefully carried box after box toward the elevator.
Bookshelves disappeared.
Paintings vanished.
The piano she’d spent months learning because Alexander once said he liked classical music rolled away.
One worker stopped beside the dining table.
“Ma’am, should we take this too?”
Emma looked at the small vase filled with fresh lilies.
She smiled sadly.
“No.”
“They’re beautiful.”
“They’re his favorite.”
She turned away before anyone noticed her eyes beginning to sting.
Hours passed.
By evening, nearly half the penthouse had been emptied.
The place no longer felt like a home. It felt like an expensive hotel room.
Emma carried one final box toward the elevator before taking one last look at the apartment.
Three years reduced to cardboard boxes.
Her phone vibrated again.
Alexander.
She stared at his name flashing across the screen.
It rang once,twice,three times.
She pressed the power button and switched off the phone without answering.
“I’m done waiting,” she whispered before the elevator doors slowly closed.
Night had already fallen when Alexander finally returned home.
He loosened his tie while walking through the front door.
“Emma?”
No answer.
He frowned.
Normally she would already be waiting with dinner, even after an argument.
He walked farther inside,then stopped.
His eyes slowly swept across the enormous living room only to find the bookshelf, the piano, the paintings, and even the little reading corner by the window gone.
Half the furniture had disappeared, leaving strange empty spaces throughout the luxurious penthouse.
Alexander stood perfectly still as the silence echoed around him.
For the first time since Emma entered his life, their home no longer looked like hers.
It looked like she had already erased herself from it.
