Chapter 4

The diner sat at the edge of neutral territory—a place where pack borders blurred and no Alpha held claim. I arrived ten minutes early and took the booth by the window. The vinyl seats were cracked. The coffee smelled burnt. It was perfect.

Brandon Calloway walked in at exactly two o'clock.

He moved like a soldier—shoulders back, steps measured, no wasted motion. His eyes swept the room once before settling on me. He crossed to the booth and sat without greeting.

"Miss Ashford," he said.

"Beta Commander."

He set a folder on the table between us. Official pack documents. The formal severance of inter-pack family ties that the mate bond had once represented. His handwriting was precise. Every clause already filled in.

"I've reviewed the terms," I said. "They're acceptable."

He nodded. Slid a pen across the table.

I signed. He signed. The whole thing took three minutes. No apologies. No explanations. Just the clean efficiency of a man who respected protocol more than he respected his son.

I almost appreciated it.

"For what it's worth," Brandon said quietly, "you handled the rejection with more composure than most Alphas would have managed."

I looked up. His expression hadn't changed, but something in his tone—acknowledgment, maybe. Recognition.

"Thank you," I said.

He gathered the documents. Started to stand. Then the back door of the diner slammed open.

Drake burst through in wolf form.

He was—smaller. That was the first thing I noticed. His dark fur had lost its sheen, patchy in places, and his aura flickered in broken waves that made the air around him feel unstable. He snarled, lips pulling back from teeth that should have been intimidating but just looked desperate.

Brandon didn't move. Didn't even turn his head.

Drake's golden eyes locked on mine. He shifted forward—half-lunge, half-stumble—and I felt him reach for the bond again. That clawing, desperate pull of an Alpha trying to find warmth in a space that had gone cold.

He found nothing.

I held his gaze. Didn't flinch. Didn't blink.

His wolf whimpered. A sound I'd never heard from him before—high, broken, the noise of an animal that didn't understand why its mate had stopped answering.

I gathered my copy of the documents, slid out of the booth, and walked past him. He didn't follow. Just stood there, shaking, his diminished form blocking the doorway like he couldn't decide whether to attack or collapse.

I pushed the door open and stepped into the cold.

Behind me, I heard Brandon's voice—low, clipped, final.

"Gage has been elevated to Beta and heir apparent. Effective immediately."

Silence.

Then a sound—raw, guttural, something between a howl and a scream. I didn't look back. I got in my car and drove away, and in the rearview mirror I saw Drake shift back to human form in the parking lot. Naked. Shaking. Alone.

I told myself I didn't care.

I was still lying.

Maren's healing room smelled like sage and something sharper—wolfsbane, maybe, or silver dust. She was ancient, this healer. Her hair was white as snow, her hands gnarled, but her eyes were clear and sharp as broken glass.

Declan had asked her to examine me. Quietly. Not as a formality.

"Sit," Maren said.

I sat. She circled me once, studying, then placed both hands on my shoulders. Her palms were warm. She closed her eyes.

The room went still.

I felt it—a pull, deep in my chest, like she was reaching past skin and bone into something older. My wolf stirred. Not howling. Not desperate. Just—present. Aware.

Maren's eyes snapped open.

"Your wolf is not absent," she said carefully. "It is suppressed."

I stared at her. "What does that mean?"

"Something is holding it back. Something deep. Old." She released my shoulders and stepped back, her expression unreadable. "The word is dormant, Miss Ashford. Not missing. Not broken. Dormant."

"Why?"

"That," Maren said quietly, "is the question, isn't it?"

She didn't elaborate. Just handed me a small vial of something that smelled like pine and moonlight.

"Drink this before you sleep," she said. "It will help your wolf breathe."

I took the vial. Left the healing room with more questions than I'd entered with.

Dormant. Not missing.

I turned the word over in my mind all the way back to my suite.

The Lycan Council chamber was carved from white stone and older than any pack I knew. Leland sat across from us with his legal counsel—two wolves in formal dress who looked like they'd rather be anywhere else.

Declan sat beside me. Rowan stood behind us. The Lycan King presided from the high seat, his expression giving nothing away.

Leland's petition was read aloud. Territory share claim. Alpha precedent. Blood Crescent dynastic authority over Leighton Ashford's mating contract.

Declan's counter-filing was read next. Lycan Council jurisdiction. Bonding compact executed under Lycan law. No pack authority supersedes Council sanction.

The King listened. Did not speak. Just—listened.

Then he looked at Leland.

"The compact was filed under Lycan jurisdiction," the King said. His voice was quiet. Final. "Blood Crescent law has no claim."

Leland's expression didn't change. He nodded once. Accepted the ruling with the same composure he'd worn when I told him I was done being manageable.

But I saw it—the recalculation moving behind his eyes. The next move already forming.

He stood. Inclined his head toward the King. Walked out of the chamber without looking at me.

I watched him go and felt—nothing. No relief. No triumph. Just the cold certainty that I had won a battle, not a war.

Declan's hand found mine under the table. Squeezed once.

I squeezed back.

Outside, the sun was setting. The Silverpine Estate waited. And somewhere in the Blood Crescent packhouse, my grandfather was already planning his next move.

But for now—for this moment—I was free.
