Chapter 5

The rogue contact was sloppy. That was the first thing I noticed when I traced the breach—too many intermediaries, too much digital noise, messages bouncing through three different burner phones before landing in Kira's hands. Whoever set it up wanted deniability. They got carelessness instead.

I sat in my study at the Blood Crescent cabin with the patrol schedule pulled up on my screen. The version Kira had accessed. The version that had been forwarded, twice, before ending up in a message thread I shouldn't have been able to recover but did.

The timestamp told me everything. Two days ago. The same night Drake had been reported loitering near my cabin's perimeter in the freezing rain, half-shifted, reeking of wolfsbane and desperation.

I closed my laptop. Looked at the door.

"Kira," I said quietly.

She appeared within thirty seconds—dark hair pulled back, hands twisting together, eyes already red. She knew. Of course she knew. Omegas always knew when they'd been caught.

I gestured to the chair across from my desk. She sat. I waited.

"I didn't think it would—" She stopped. Swallowed. Started again. "He was so broken, Leighton. His wolf was—I've never seen an Alpha like that. He just wanted to talk to you. He said he just needed one conversation."

I let the silence stretch. Watched her fidget. Watched her try to find words that would make this something other than what it was.

"He used you," I said finally. "You know that."

Her face crumpled. "I thought—I thought if you just talked to him, maybe—"

"Maybe what?" My voice stayed level. Quiet. "Maybe I'd take him back? Maybe the bond would magically repair itself because you felt sorry for him?"

She flinched. "No. I just—he was in so much pain."

"He rejected me in front of three hundred witnesses," I said. "His pain is not my responsibility. And it's certainly not yours to manage by handing out my patrol schedule to rogue contacts."

Kira's hands shook in her lap. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean—"

"I know you didn't mean to." I leaned forward slightly. "That's the problem, Kira. You didn't think. You saw someone in pain and decided that was more important than the security of this household. Than my safety. Than the boundaries I've set for a reason."

Tears slipped down her cheeks. She didn't wipe them away.

I opened my desk drawer. Pulled out an envelope. Set it on the desk between us.

"You're dismissed from my inner circle," I said. "Effective immediately. Your general household duties will continue under the estate supervisor's direction, but you will no longer have access to my private schedule, my quarters, or any information regarding my movements."

Her breath hitched. "Leighton, please—"

"This is not a negotiation." I slid the envelope toward her. "Your severance is inside. It's more than fair."

She stared at the envelope like it was a weapon. "I didn't do it for money. I didn't—I was trying to help."

"I know," I said quietly. "But help that compromises the person you're supposedly helping isn't help. It's complicity."

She stood. Took the envelope with shaking hands. Turned toward the door. Stopped.

"Your pup," she whispered. "My daughter—she's sick. The healer said—"

"I know," I said.

She looked back at me. Confused. Desperate.

I held her gaze. "You're dismissed, Kira. That's all."

She left. The door closed behind her with a soft click.

I sat alone in the study and listened to the sound of her footsteps fading down the hall. My wolf stirred—not angry, not vindictive. Just—clear. Boundaries weren't cruelty. They were survival.

I pulled out my phone. Sent a single message to Maren, the Silverpine healer.

*Kira's daughter. Full treatment. Bill it to my personal account. Do not tell Kira the source.*

The reply came back within a minute. *Understood.*

I set the phone down. Looked out the window at the forest beyond. Somewhere out there, Drake was probably still licking his wounds from being growled away by my patrol wolves. Ignored. Dismissed. Not even worth the confrontation he'd been so desperate to provoke.

Gage's standing order had been elegant in its simplicity: *Do not engage. Redirect and report.* No violence. No drama. Just—removal. Like clearing debris from a path.

I wondered if Drake understood yet. That this was what irrelevance felt like. That he could stand in the rain for forty minutes, half-shifted and howling, and no one would care enough to acknowledge him.

My phone buzzed. A report from the patrol lead.

*Calloway sighting at 0300. Perimeter breach attempt. Redirected without incident. Subject retreated after forty minutes. No engagement required.*

Forty minutes. In the freezing rain. Waiting for me to appear.

I deleted the message.

That evening, I was reviewing territory reports when my phone buzzed again. A message from an unknown number. I almost deleted it. Almost.

Then I saw the preview text.

*The pup is stable. Treatment begins tomorrow. —M*

Maren. Confirming.

I set the phone down and returned to my reports. The two actions—dismissing Kira, ensuring her daughter's care—sat side by side in my chest without conflict. I had removed a security risk. I had protected a child. Both were necessary. Both were right.

I was still staring at the reports when the second message came through. Not from Maren this time. From a blocked number. Just two words.

*Please, Leighton.*

Drake.

I stared at the screen. At the desperation compressed into two words. At the pathetic, broken plea of a man who had thrown away everything and now couldn't understand why begging wouldn't bring it back.

My finger hovered over the delete button.

Then my phone rang. Declan's name on the screen.

I answered. "Yes?"

"Pack summit," he said without preamble. "Three days. Silverpine is hosting. Ironclaw will be in attendance."

My stomach dropped. "Drake will be there."

"Yes."

Silence stretched between us.

"Leighton," Declan said quietly. "He's going to try something."

I looked at Drake's message still glowing on my screen. *Please, Leighton.*

"I know," I said.

And somewhere deep in my chest, behind the armor and the boundaries and the cold, clear logic that had kept me alive this long—my wolf stirred.

Not howling.

Waiting.
