Chapter 2

I stopped at the Ironveil coffee house because my hands wouldn't stop shaking.

It sat on neutral ground, the strip of territory between pack lands where wolves from different bloodlines could meet without risking a challenge. The place smelled like burnt espresso and old leather, and I sat in the corner booth with my back to the wall, gripping a cup of black coffee I couldn't taste.

I'd rejected my fated mate an hour ago. The bond was still burning, a low smolder in my chest that flared every time I breathed too deep. My wolf was silent. Not sleeping. Silent, the way a room goes silent after something inside it has stopped moving.

The door chimed.

Camila Cruz walked in wearing a cream sweater and dark jeans, her hair perfectly styled, her smile bright enough to cut glass. Around her throat sat a rare moonstone pendant, the kind of gift traditionally reserved for a Luna. I'd seen it on her Instagram two weeks ago, captioned *From my Alpha* with three heart emojis.

She slid into the seat across from me without asking.

"Elena," she said, tilting her head with something that might've been pity if it hadn't been so satisfied. "I heard you left in a hurry. Are you okay?"

I didn't answer. I just looked at her, at the pendant catching the light, at the faint flush still high on her cheeks.

"Colin's worried about you," she continued, tracing one manicured nail along the edge of the table. "He said you got... emotional. That you said some things you didn't mean."

"I meant every word."

Her smile faltered, just a flicker. "Elena, come on. You've been with him for ten years. You can't just throw that away over a misunderstanding."

"A misunderstanding," I repeated slowly.

"He cares about you," Camila said, leaning forward, her voice dropping into something softer, almost kind. "But he needs a Luna who can keep up with him. Someone strong. Someone who doesn't fall apart every time he has responsibilities."

She reached across the table like she was going to pat my hand.

I picked up my coffee and threw it in her face.

The scalding liquid hit her square across the cheek and throat. She screamed, high and sharp, stumbling back from the table as the entire coffee house went silent. Chairs scraped. Heads turned. Someone dropped a mug.

I leaned across the table, close enough that only she could hear me.

"He's all yours," I said quietly. "I hope he was worth it."

Then I stood, walked past the staring wolves, and left her there with coffee dripping down her perfect cream sweater.

I didn't look back.

I blocked Colin through every mind-link channel before I even reached my car. Then I drove north without stopping, the bond still burning low and steady in my chest, my wolf still silent, and the city lights blurring past the windshield like stars I couldn't reach.

---

The Dawnridge Pack estate sat on the Upper East Side, a stone manor with iron gates and old money written into every brick. I'd grown up here. I knew every crack in the marble foyer, every creak in the stairs.

It looked smaller than I remembered.

My father was waiting in his study when I arrived. Alpha Richard Mason, broad-shouldered and silver-haired, who'd once commanded three allied packs and a council seat. Now he looked older than his years, his face lined with exhaustion, his hands gripping the edge of his desk like it was the only thing keeping him upright.

"Elena," he said, and his voice cracked on my name.

I stood in the doorway and waited.

"Three packs have severed their treaties in six months," he said finally, not meeting my eyes. "Warriors are leaving for stronger territories. The treasury's strained. The Council of Alphas met last week, and they... they suggested a political mating alliance. As Dawnridge's only viable path forward."

I felt something cold settle in my stomach.

"You're asking me to mate again," I said.

"I'm asking you to save our bloodline." He looked up then, guilt carved deep into every line of his face. "I know what I'm asking. I know what you just walked away from. But Elena, if we don't secure an alliance, Dawnridge won't survive the year."

I thought about ten years of waiting. About rosemary chicken going cold. About the scent of jasmine on sheets I'd never sleep in.

"Who?" I asked.

My father hesitated. "The Council suggested... Lycan Prince Benjamin Harrison. Of the Silvercrest Bloodline."

The name hit me like a fist.

Benjamin. The boy who'd shifted for the first time to save me from a rogue wolf in the Adirondack woods when we were children. The boy with the scar on his shoulder and the quiet eyes who'd disappeared from my life twelve years ago without explanation.

"I'll think about it," I said.

Then I walked upstairs to my childhood bedroom and closed the door.

---

Sylvie arrived three hours later.

I heard her before I saw her — boots on the stairs, the sharp knock that meant she wasn't asking permission. She pushed the door open, took one look at me sitting on the floor with my back against the bed, and crossed the room in three strides.

"Tell me," she said.

So I did. The scent on the sheets. Colin's voice through the door. The rejection that burned through my chest like wildfire. The way my wolf had howled once and then gone silent.

Sylvie listened without interrupting. Then she pulled a flask from her jacket, unscrewed the cap, and handed it to me.

"Whiskey," she said. "Drink."

I drank. It burned, sharp and clean, nothing like the bond.

"Your wolf going silent is dangerous," Sylvie said quietly, sitting beside me on the floor. "Prolonged suppression can weaken a she-wolf permanently. You need to heal, Elena. Not just survive."

"I don't know how."

"You start by letting yourself be angry." She took the flask back and drank. "You spent ten years swallowing your feelings for that bastard. You're allowed to feel them now."

I leaned my head against her shoulder. She smelled like pine and steel, solid and familiar.

"My father wants me to mate again," I said. "A political alliance. To save Dawnridge."

Sylvie went very still. "Who?"

"Benjamin Harrison."

She was quiet for a long moment. Then she said, "The Lycan Prince."

"Yes."

"The one who saved you in the Adirondacks."

"Yes."

Sylvie exhaled slowly. "Elena, if you're not ready—"

"I don't know if I'll ever be ready," I said. "But Dawnridge is collapsing. And I'm the only card my father has left to play."

She didn't argue. She just held me while the bond burned low in my chest and my wolf stayed silent, and outside the window the city lights blurred like stars I couldn't reach.
