After My Mate Replaced Me With the Alliance Bride Chapter 1

My hands were still bleeding when I opened the door, and for three full seconds, I didn't understand what I was looking at.

Then the mate bond did what it always did—it told me the truth before my eyes caught up. David's scent, usually low and familiar in my chest, was suddenly wrong. Layered. Threaded through with something floral and expensive that didn't belong to me, sinking into my ribs like acid poured slow. My knees actually buckled, just an inch, before I caught the doorframe.

Gracie Henderson didn't move to cover herself. She looked at me over David's shoulder with the flat, unbothered gaze of someone glancing at furniture. I knew her name because David had said it a hundred times in the last month—Bruce Henderson's daughter, the Silverfang alliance, the deal that was going to change everything. I hadn't understood, until that exact second, what everything meant.

"Kamila." David said my name like an inconvenience, not an apology.

I didn't answer. Something old and coiled twisted low in my chest, a pressure with no name, like a held breath that had been held for twenty-six years. It wasn't rage. It wasn't grief. It felt like a door somewhere deep inside me creaking on a hinge that hadn't moved in a long time.

"An Omega who cannot even grow a wolf," said a voice behind me, smooth as poured cream, "should know better than to expect a bed."

Judith. David's mother, Ironveil's former Luna, the woman who had spent six years teaching me exactly how small I was allowed to be. She reached past me and tore the leather satchel off my shoulder before I could react, and swung it down against the hardwood so hard the strap snapped.

The scrolls spilled out across the floor. Blood-inked, still faintly warm from the ward-work I'd bled for at dawn. Judith stepped on one deliberately as she walked past it, her heel grinding into the ink like it was nothing. Like it wasn't the reason Ironveil's borders had held for six years.

David watched all of it. He didn't say a word. The bond kept humming between us, open and alive, and through it I felt exactly what he felt: nothing sharp, nothing guilty. Just relief, thin and cowardly, that someone else was doing the part he didn't want to do.

I knelt, gathered my satchel, left the scrolls where they'd fallen, and walked out. I didn't trust my voice yet to not shake.

I drove to the northern treeline instead of home. The exact ground I'd knelt on six hours earlier, wrist open, ink drying under my nails while I sang the ward-line back into strength for a man who was, at that moment, taking someone else's mouth into his. I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist, over the thin white scars, and made a decision so quiet it didn't feel like a decision at all.

I would not come back to renew them.

I didn't announce it to the trees. I just stood there until, faint as a held breath letting go, the ward-line at the eastern perimeter flickered. Once. A stranger wouldn't have caught it. I caught it, and something in me settled, cold and exact.

The summons came through the pack mind-link the next morning, clipped and impersonal: *Assembly. Great hall. Alliance announcement.* I knew before I walked in that the word announcement was a lie.

David stood on the raised platform, Gracie at his side in a dress the color of a wedding I hadn't been invited to. Rows of pack members filled the hall, all of them careful not to look at me too long. Papers sat folded in David's hand.

"Kneel," he said, and the Alpha tone slammed through the mate bond into my bones like a fist closing around my spine.

My knees trembled. The whole room saw it. But I did not go down.

I held his eyes instead, until something in his—some flicker of certainty—cracked, just once, just barely, and his aura wavered like a candle in a draft.

"Without me," I said, my voice stripped of everything, "your borders will fall before the next new moon."

I didn't touch the papers. I turned and walked the length of the hall while two hundred wolves watched in silence too ashamed to be called silence.

Behind me, before the doors shut, I heard Judith's voice, already low and quick against David's ear.

"Lock the satchel in the basement vault tonight," she said. "Before she thinks to come back for it."
