Chapter 3

The bond didn't go quiet after Hudson hung up. It should have. A severed connection—or one about to be severed—usually dims, fades to background static. But this one kept screaming.

Not words. Not images. Just the texture of his emotional state bleeding through the link we'd shared for ten years. I felt guilt rising in sharp spikes, then flattening under something heavier. Justification. The particular rhythm of a man rewriting his own story in real time, sanding down the edges until the narrative fit.

I'd felt this pattern before. Every time Hudson made a decision he knew was wrong but needed to be right. The bond would pulse with anxiety, then smooth out as he convinced himself. I used to think it was normal. That everyone's mate bond carried this kind of low-level dissonance.

I knew better now.

I sat in my car outside Declan's cabin for twenty minutes, feeling Hudson's emotional state cycle through the same loop. Anxiety. Justification. Resolve. Anxiety. Justification. Resolve. He was preparing for something. Rehearsing.

I started the engine and drove back to Ironveil.

By the time I reached the pack house, it was past midnight. I didn't go to my rooms. I went straight to the records room and locked the door behind me.

The external archive had been my insurance policy since year two of our marriage. Not because I didn't trust Hudson. Because I didn't trust memory. I'd seen too many wolves—good wolves, honest wolves—misremember decisions under pressure. So I kept backups. Every alliance document I drafted. Every negotiation transcript. Every strategic plan. Stored off-site in a secure digital archive that only I could access.

I pulled up the interface on my laptop and began copying files.

The Silverfang alliance. The Crescent Ridge territorial expansion. The Northwater trade agreement. Every single negotiation where my name appeared in the original documentation. I copied the originals. I copied my personal notes. I copied the email chains, the meeting summaries, the hand-drawn maps I'd sketched during planning sessions.

Four hours later, the archive contained everything Hudson was about to claim I'd failed at.

I closed the laptop. My hands were steady. My wolf was silent inside me—not the cold silence from before, but something deeper. Watchful.

I didn't sleep. I sat in the records room until dawn, listening to the pack house wake up around me. Footsteps in the hallway. Voices in the common room. The particular rhythm of a pack going through its morning routine, unaware that the center was about to fall out.

At seven a.m., I heard her.

Aspyn's voice, high and bright, echoing down the corridor from the residential wing. My residential wing.

"No, the blue linens," she was saying. "The white ones are too plain. And I want breakfast in the sitting room, not the dining hall. It's more private."

I stood. Walked to the doorway. Looked down the hall toward the Luna's suite.

Aspyn was standing in the open doorway, gesturing at Maren Holt, who held an armful of folded linens and listened with the particular stillness of someone who had stopped reacting years ago.

"And those maps in the next room," Aspyn continued, waving vaguely toward the war room. "They're so oppressive. Can you just... put them somewhere else? I want to use that space for something lighter."

Maren's gaze flicked past Aspyn. Met mine.

I didn't move. Didn't speak. Just looked at her.

Maren's expression didn't change. She nodded once—so small I almost missed it—then turned back to Aspyn.

"I'll take care of it," Maren said quietly.

Aspyn smiled. "Thank you. You're so helpful."

She disappeared back into the suite. My suite. The rooms I'd lived in for ten years.

Maren walked past me without a word, the linens still in her arms, and headed toward the storage wing. I followed at a distance.

She unlocked a cabinet I'd never paid attention to before—one of the old storage units near the back stairwell—and began placing the maps inside. Not crumpled. Not discarded. Folded with the same precision I would have used myself. She stacked them in order: territorial boundaries on the bottom, alliance networks in the middle, trade routes on top.

When she finished, she locked the cabinet and slipped the key into her pocket.

I stepped into the hallway. Maren turned. Saw me. Didn't flinch.

"She doesn't know your name, does she?" I asked softly.

Maren's mouth twitched. Not quite a smile. "No, Luna."

"Don't call me that," I said. "Not after tomorrow."

Maren looked at me for a long moment. Then she said, very quietly, "You'll always be Luna to the wolves who know what that word means."

She walked past me and disappeared down the corridor.

I stood alone in the storage hallway, staring at the locked cabinet, and felt something settle in my chest. Not comfort. Certainty.

The fracture in the pack became visible over the next three days.

Training sessions lost their rhythm. Declan ran drills with the Deltas, but the formations were sloppy, the responses delayed. Wolves who usually moved like a single organism now hesitated, checking over their shoulders as if waiting for instruction that wasn't coming.

Two territorial disputes—minor things, the kind I would have resolved in an afternoon with a few phone calls and a revised patrol schedule—went unaddressed. The wolves involved grew tense. Tempers flared in the common room.

Hudson stayed in his office. Aspyn stayed in my suite. I stayed in the records room.

On the second day, a ranked she-wolf named Iris found me in the training corridor. She was young, maybe twenty-five, a Delta with a clean service record and a reputation for asking smart questions.

She stopped in front of me, her hands clasped behind her back, and said, "Luna, I don't believe what they're saying about Silverfang."

I looked at her. She held my gaze.

"Thank you," I said.

I kept walking.

Iris didn't follow. But I felt her watching me all the way down the corridor, and I knew she wasn't the only one.

That night, the bond pulsed again. Harder this time. Hudson's anxiety spiking so high I felt it like a hand around my throat.

Then it flattened. Smoothed out. Resolved.

He'd made his decision.

I sat alone in the records room, my laptop open in front of me, the archive complete, and waited for tomorrow.
