Chapter 4

The assembly hall was built to hold three hundred wolves comfortably. Tonight it felt smaller.

I arrived at seven forty-five, fifteen minutes before the official start time. The hall was already half full. Wolves stood in clusters along the walls, their voices low, their eyes tracking my movement as I walked down the center aisle. I wore no Luna insignia. No formal dress. Just dark pants and a plain shirt. I carried nothing.

I stopped in the center of the assembly floor. Not at the side where Lunas traditionally stood during formal proceedings. Not in the back with the unranked wolves. The center. Where everyone could see me.

The murmur of conversation died.

I felt the shift in the room's energy before I understood what was causing it. Wolves near me—Deltas I'd trained with, younger pack members I'd mentored—moved slightly closer. Not consciously. Just a half-step. A lean. Pulled by something they didn't have language for.

Then they caught themselves. Looked at each other. Stepped back.

I stood alone and waited.

Hudson entered at eight o'clock exactly. Ronan walked two steps behind him, carrying a leather folder I recognized immediately. The fabricated Silverfang file. Aspyn came last, her hand resting on Hudson's arm, her scent rolling through the enclosed space like sugar dissolving in water. Cloying. Everywhere.

She wore a pale blue dress. Her hair was pinned up. She looked like someone had dressed her for a coronation.

Hudson took his position at the raised platform. Aspyn stood just behind him, her chin lifted, her gaze sweeping the assembly with something that might have been triumph or might have been nerves. I couldn't tell. Didn't care.

Hudson's Alpha tone filled the hall before he spoke a word. Pressure. Weight. The particular frequency that made lesser wolves drop their eyes and bare their necks without thinking.

I didn't move.

"This assembly has been called to address a matter of Luna conduct," Hudson said. His voice was steady. Formal. He'd rehearsed this. "The findings are serious. The evidence is comprehensive. What I am about to present affects not just our pack's leadership, but our standing with allied territories."

He opened the folder.

"On November eighteenth of last year," he continued, "I assigned Luna Hallie Mercer as primary negotiator for the Silverfang territorial alliance. This was a critical negotiation. Silverfang controls the northern trade routes we need for expansion. The terms were delicate. The relationship was fragile."

I listened. I counted.

That was the first lie.

"Luna Mercer pursued aggressive terms against my explicit directive," Hudson said. He pulled a document from the folder and held it up. "This memo, dated December fifth, outlines her strategy. She intended to claim contested border zones that Silverfang had held for two generations. She dismissed my concerns. She told me—and I quote—that Silverfang would accept our terms or face isolation."

I'd never written that memo. I'd never said those words.

That was the second lie.

"On December eighth," Hudson continued, "Luna Mercer met with Alpha Aldric Crane of Silverfang Pack. The meeting lasted four hours. By the end, Alpha Crane had walked out. He sent a formal communication the following day threatening to sever all diplomatic ties with Ironveil and consider our territorial claims an act of aggression."

Aspyn had been at that meeting. Not me. I'd been in the records room that afternoon, reviewing supply chain logistics for the winter patrols. Declan had signed off on my location log himself.

Third lie.

Hudson read from the altered meeting notes. My name appeared six times. Each instance was a fabrication. Each one painted me as arrogant, dismissive, strategically reckless.

Fourth lie. Fifth. Sixth.

The wolves in the assembly listened in silence. Some of them knew. I could see it in the way their eyes flicked toward me, then away. The way their shoulders tensed. But they said nothing.

Hudson closed the folder.

"Luna Mercer's actions nearly ignited a territorial war," he said. "Her judgment is compromised. Her loyalty to this pack is in question. And her conduct is unworthy of the title she holds."

Seventh lie.

He looked at me directly for the first time since I'd walked into the hall.

I looked back. My face was calm. My hands were loose at my sides. I didn't speak.

Hudson's jaw tightened.

"I, Hudson Thorne, Alpha of Ironveil," he said, and his voice dropped into the formal cadence that every wolf in the room recognized, "reject you, Hallie Mercer, as my mate and Luna, for dereliction of duty and conduct unworthy of this pack."

The words landed like stones in still water.

The mark on my neck went white-cold.

Not painful. Not yet. Just cold. Like someone had pressed ice directly against the scar where his teeth had sealed our bond ten years ago. The living connection—the thread that had carried his heartbeat and his lies and every phantom wound I'd ever felt on his behalf—emptied out.

My wolf collapsed.

Not slowly. Not gracefully. She just dropped inside me like a weight cut loose, and the space where she'd been went silent.

My aura cracked.

I felt it happen. Felt the thing that had held me upright in front of three hundred wolves for ten years fracture down the center. The air around me dimmed. Several wolves in the front row flinched.

My knees buckled.

I dropped. One knee hit the floor. Hard. My hand shot out, palm flat against the stone, holding me upright by force of will alone.

I couldn't breathe.

The pain came then. Not in my neck. Deeper. Soul-deep. Like something essential had been ripped out of my chest and the wound was still open, still bleeding, and I couldn't close it.

I gasped. Once. The sound echoed in the silent hall.

Three hundred wolves stared.

Hudson stood on the platform, his expression unreadable, and said nothing.

Aspyn's hand tightened on his arm.

And then my bones began to crack.
