Chapter 2

Rose's kitchen table wasn't built for war planning. It had a water ring from Rose's tea mug worn into the wood, and a chip in the corner from the year I dropped a cast-iron pan on it at fourteen. But it was where I spread the ledger open anyway, because it was the only surface in the world that still felt like mine.

The book was leather-bound, soft at the spine from seven years of handling. Every alliance I'd ever brokered lived inside it — dates, terms, the names of the Alphas and Betas who'd shaken my hand on a deal Damien never bothered to read before signing. I'd kept it separate from the official pack records on purpose. Some instinct, even back then, had told me not to let all my work live in a place he could touch.

"You're smiling," Natalie said, watching me over her coffee. "That's a scary smile, Ev."

"I'm working."

"You're working with a scary smile."

I turned another page. The Ironridge trade pact. The Blackwater border treaty. Three separate Council supply agreements, each one requiring my signature — not Damien's — to remain valid, because I'd written the clause that way myself, years ago, back when I still believed protecting the pack meant protecting him too. I pulled out a red pen and started marking the ones that would collapse the moment I withdrew.

There were more than I expected. That was the strange, cold comfort of it — proof, in ink, that Silverfang hadn't survived on Damien's strength at all. It had survived on mine, quietly, for seven years, while he took the credit at every regional summit.

"Fourteen pack members reached out since the ceremony," Natalie said, sliding her own notebook across the table. "Quietly. Diane the healer. Two Deltas. Even Corbin's cousin, the one who runs logistics."

"Write down who," I said. "Write down what they offered. We may need every one of them later."

"Already did." She tapped her pen against the page. "You're building an army out of a spreadsheet."

"It's a ledger."

"Scary smile," she said again, and went back to her list.

I didn't tell her the low, furious thing under my ribs had started answering to the sound of my own pen scratching paper. It liked this. It liked the plan.

The forgery came three days later, in a manila envelope from Ironridge, addressed to me by courtesy of the Alpha's aide — a young man named Pruitt who'd always been more careful than his boss gave him credit for. Inside was a copy of a letter, my old Luna seal pressed into the wax, my name typed at the bottom above a signature that wasn't mine.

*Evelyn Webb confirms the rejection changes nothing regarding Silverfang's standing obligations —*

I read it twice. Then I read the seal — my seal, the one I'd surrendered the night of the ceremony, apparently retrieved from wherever Damien had hidden it. My hand didn't shake. I noticed that, distantly, the way you notice weather.

"He forged your signature," Natalie said, reading over my shoulder, her voice gone flat and dangerous. "Ev, that's Council fraud. We could end him with this alone."

"Not yet." I folded the letter and slid it into the back of the ledger, behind a tab I'd started labeling *Evidence*. "He'll do it again. Let him build the pile himself."

"You're terrifying, you know that?"

"I'm patient," I said. "There's a difference."

The Ironridge banquet was held in a hall strung with warm lights and the smell of roasted venison, three hundred miles of careful diplomacy hanging in the air along with the smoke. I hadn't planned to see Damien there. I'd been invited separately, as the pact's original architect — a courtesy from the Ironridge Alpha that told me everything about who he still believed actually ran Silverfang.

Damien arrived with Aileen on his arm, her hand looped through his elbow like she'd rehearsed the angle in a mirror. "My chosen mate," he announced to the assembled Alphas, and I watched three of them exchange a glance that wasn't kind.

When I walked in, the room changed temperature. I felt it before I saw it — heads turning, conversation dying mid-sentence.

"Evelyn." Damien's voice dropped into that performative Alpha register, the one meant to press weight onto a room. "You shouldn't be —"

"I'm not yours to command anymore." I said it quietly. His tone had no hold on me at all — I felt that, distinctly, for the first time, like a leash simply not being there. "The Ironridge trade pact requires Luna ratification to remain binding. I drafted that clause myself." I looked at the Ironridge Alpha, not Damien. "I'm withdrawing my signature. Effective immediately."

Damien's face went through three colors before it settled on rage. "You can't —"

"I already have."

The silence that followed had weight to it. Somewhere behind him, Aileen's hand slipped off his arm.

I turned and walked out into the cold, and behind me I heard the Ironridge Alpha murmur something low to his Beta — not about Damien. About me.
