Chapter 3

The story started small, the way rot always does.

By the end of that week, it had a shape. Damien stood before the pack elders in the great hall — the same hall where he'd said my name and killed something in front of three hundred witnesses — and called me vindictive. Wolfless. A woman so eaten up by jealousy over Aileen that I was sabotaging the pack's alliances out of spite.

Martha carried the rest. She was better at it than he was, which didn't surprise me. She'd had decades of practice dressing cruelty up as concern.

"Poor Aileen," she told the elders, folding her hands like a woman at prayer. "Devoted, loyal, willing to step into a role Evelyn clearly never wanted enough to protect. It's a tragedy, really, what jealousy does to a person with no bloodline to fall back on."

I heard about it secondhand, from Natalie, who relayed it with the flat disgust of someone reading a grocery list of insults. I didn't feel much of anything when she told me. That surprised me more than the insults did.

"They're saying it in every elder meeting now," Natalie said. "Word for word, like she's got a script. Which — knowing Martha — she probably does."

"Let her talk," I said. "A story only works if the people living it believe it."

And that was the part Damien hadn't accounted for. The warriors didn't believe it.

I'd trained half of Silverfang's fighting force myself — drilled formations into them at dawn, rewritten patrol protocols after losing two Deltas to a rogue ambush the old system hadn't caught in time, sat up with Diane more nights than I could count refining triage procedures so a wolf bleeding out on a border run had a real chance of walking home. They knew whose hands had built the thing keeping them alive. A story told in an elder meeting didn't erase that.

One by one, they started reaching out to Natalie. Quietly. Carefully, like people testing ice.

"You should see the list now," Natalie said, sliding her notebook across the kitchen table. Rose was at the stove behind us, humming, pretending not to listen while listening to every word. "Two more Deltas. A Gamma trainee. And Diane came by the training field today. Wanted to talk to you directly, but she looked like she'd swallowed something bad, so I told her to come to me first."

"Diane," I repeated. My pen stopped over the ledger.

Diane Whitfield had run this pack's health checks for a decade. She didn't spook easily, and she didn't waste anyone's time.

Natalie set her phone on the table, screen up, showing a photograph of a requisition log — Diane's own handwriting in the margins, dates circled in red. "She's been sitting on this for months. Wolfsbane orders crossing her desk, concentrations too low to use as a weapon, but too precise to be an accident. Someone was calibrating a dose. Long-term."

The kitchen went very quiet. Even Rose's humming stopped.

"She's been running bloodwork," Natalie said, quieter now. "On samples you gave her during routine checks. Says it's not conclusive yet. But the pattern's — Ev, she used the word *damning*. Diane doesn't use words like that."

I thought about seven years of exhaustion I'd blamed on stress, on overwork, on being the kind of wolf whose body had simply never learned how to shift. I thought about every time someone at a regional summit had looked at me sideways when they learned I had no known bloodline, no wolf to speak of, as though the absence were a moral failing instead of a fact imposed on me by someone else's hand.

The fury came up slow this time, not sharp. Cold instead of hot. That was somehow worse.

"Tell her to say nothing," I said. "Not to Martha, not to the elders, not even to the warriors who've reached out to you. Nothing until she's certain."

"And if she asks why you're not panicking?"

"Tell her I don't panic over evidence," I said. "I collect it."

Natalie studied me for a long moment, then nodded and went back to her list, though I caught her glancing at me twice more before she finished her coffee — the way you look at a pot you're not sure has started boiling yet.

The second piece of news came that evening, folded into a Council courtesy notice Natalie found while checking the registry for any further forgeries under my name.

"Garrett Voss is coming," she said, reading off her phone. "Lycan King's Beta. Scheduled diplomatic observation, Silverfang territory, sometime in the next two weeks."

I turned that over slowly, the way I turned over every fact worth keeping. A witness of that rank, present at the right moment — that wasn't nothing. It was a variable I hadn't had access to an hour ago.

"Note the exact dates," I said. "And find out who's briefing him before he arrives."

Natalie's eyes narrowed, already three steps ahead in the way that made her dangerous. "You've got that smile again."

"I'm working," I said, and reached for the ledger.
