Chapter 2

I arrived at Crescent Bluff the next morning with one bag.

Everything else I owned was still in Ironvale. My books, my winter coat, eight years of ceremony notes. I didn't go back for any of it. Going back meant walking past people who had watched me kneel.

The compound sat on the edge of the sea cliffs. Gray stone walls, black iron gates, guards who didn't blink. The wind smelled like salt and pine.

Elliot Vance met me at the gate. He was the man from last night, the one who had walked my contract into the hall like it was a weapon.

"Miss Solano." He gave a short bow. "Your quarters are ready."

"Ready since when?" I asked.

He paused for half a second. "Since this morning."

It wasn't a lie. But it wasn't the whole truth either. I let it go.

He led me through quiet halls. No one stared. No one whispered. After Ironvale, the silence felt strange, like a sound I had forgotten.

My room faced the sea. Big windows, white curtains, a bed with plain gray sheets. I set my bag down and turned to the side door.

"Your workshop," Elliot said.

I opened it, and stopped.

Long oak tables. Good light from the north windows. Shelves full of supplies, all labeled. I walked along them slowly. Hand-dyed ribbon from the Ashwood mills. Beeswax candles from the Hollow Creek bees, not the cheap ones from the city. Dried river reeds from the Southmarsh pack. I had only ever ordered those reeds twice.

On the main table sat a stack of ritual books. Old binding frameworks. Three of them had notes stuck inside, marking chapters I had once called outdated in a design proposal.

A proposal I had sent to one Alpha. Five years ago.

My fingers went still on the cover.

Someone had studied me. Not just my name. My work. My choices. What I liked and what I hated.

I should have felt flattered. Instead, the back of my neck prickled, right over the cold half-mark.

I didn't ask Elliot how. I didn't want to hear him not answer.

"Thank you," I said. "I'll start this afternoon."

He nodded and left. I rolled up my sleeves and pulled the wrist brace from my bag. Then I got to work. Work, I understood. Work never looked at me like I was missing something.

---

The next day, I rode with a supply driver down the coastal road to pick up linen.

It was raining again. On the way back, I saw something move under a broken fence post. A small, wet lump of gray fur.

"Stop the truck," I said.

The driver frowned but stopped.

I crouched in the mud. A pup looked back at me. Half wolf, half dog, all ears and bad attitude. He was shaking and too thin. But he didn't whine. He just stared at me like I was late.

"Wow," I said. "Okay. Rude."

He sneezed.

I took off my jacket, wrapped him up, and carried him to the truck. He was warm and heavy against my chest. He smelled terrible.

"What's his name?" the driver asked.

I looked down at the angry little face. I tried to think of the least noble name in the world.

"Barnaby," I said.

The driver choked. I laughed. It surprised me so much that I put a hand over my mouth. When was the last time I had laughed? Not a polite laugh. A real one. I honestly couldn't remember.

At the gate, Elliot was waiting. His eyes moved from my face to my soaked jacket to the furious pup poking out of it.

He said nothing at all. But I watched him file it away, like a man writing a note he planned to show someone later.

---

Two mornings after that, I went down to the kitchen before dawn.

I couldn't sleep. I had dreamed about the fire and the stone and Liam's back walking away. I wanted tea and something to do with my hands.

The kitchen lights were off. The stove's small blue clock glowed. I reached for the switch, then froze.

There was a man on the floor.

Kieran Ashford, the Lycan Prince, lay flat on the tile in a gray shirt and sweatpants. One arm was bent under his head. His bare feet stuck out past the island.

And on his chest, rising and falling with every breath, was Barnaby.

The pup was curled into a tight ball. He was snoring. Loudly.

I stood there and tried to make it make sense. This was the man other Alphas looked away from. The man whose name made pack leaders lower their voices. Last night, in the dining hall, I had heard a Gamma say Kieran once broke an Alpha's ribs without changing his expression.

That man was asleep on a kitchen floor. Under twelve pounds of ugly fur.

Kieran opened one eye.

He saw me. He didn't sit up. He didn't reach for an excuse. He didn't even look embarrassed.

"He chose me," he said, calm as a judge reading a verdict.

Barnaby's tail thumped once against his ribs. He didn't wake up.

I opened my mouth. Nothing came out.

Kieran closed his eye again. His hand rose and settled on the pup's back, careful, like he was holding something that might break.

I stayed in the doorway a long time.

I had built a wall since that night in the rain. Contract. Terms. Work. Nothing more. It was a good wall. I had built it brick by brick.

Standing there, watching him breathe, I felt the first crack run straight through it.

And deep in my chest, in the empty room where my wolf used to be, something lifted its head.
