Chapter 3

The first time, I almost tripped over it.

It was past ten. I had spent nine hours in the workshop with ribbon samples and bad lighting, and my wrist ached under the brace. I opened my door to go to bed and nearly kicked a covered pot.

No knock. No note. Just a heavy iron pot sitting on the stone floor, still warm.

I lifted the lid. Steam rose up. Beef, slow-braised until it fell apart. Carrots. Rosemary and bay leaf. The smell rolled down the whole corridor.

I looked left. I looked right. The hall was empty.

I ate it standing at my window. It was the best thing I had eaten in years. I didn't let myself think about that.

The second night, it was bread. A round loaf wrapped in a cloth, flecked with thyme and something green I couldn't name. It was still warm when I found it. Whoever left it had left it only minutes before.

I knew who. I just didn't want to say it, even in my own head.

In Ironvale, Liam brought me herb bundles. Moonflower, silver sage, wild thyme. Always the same three. Always after he'd missed a dinner, or a birthday, or a promise. I used to keep them in a jar by my bed. I used to think they meant he was sorry.

This bread didn't feel like sorry. It didn't ask for anything back.

That scared me more.

The third night, I was ready. I left the workshop early and waited in the shadow of the hallway, just past the corner.

He came at ten.

Kieran walked quietly for a man that big. He carried a covered dish with both hands, like it mattered. He bent down, set it in front of my door, and straightened up.

Then he turned and walked back toward the kitchen.

He didn't knock. He didn't even glance at my door. He just left.

I stayed where I was until his footsteps were gone. Then I picked up the dish. Herb bread again, and a small jar of butter.

I didn't eat at the table in my room. I took it into the workshop and sat on the floor between my ceremony plans. Paper all around me, the bread warm in my lap.

It was easier there. I didn't ask myself why.

---

On my fifth night, I couldn't sleep at all.

I got up and walked the lower corridor in my socks. The compound was dark and quiet. Only the sea made noise, far below the cliffs.

I turned the corner toward my room and stopped.

Kieran was standing outside my door.

He wasn't knocking. He wasn't holding a dish. He was just standing there in the dark, eyes closed, hands loose at his sides. Completely still.

He breathed in. Slow. Then out.

It took me a second to understand. The gap beneath the door. He was breathing in my scent through the gap beneath my door.

He didn't know I was there. The wind was coming off the sea, blowing my scent the other way.

I watched him for thirty seconds. His shoulders. The tight line of his mouth. The way he stood, like his body knew exactly where to stop. Like it had stood in that spot before.

Many times before.

I backed away without a sound. I went the long way around and slipped into my room through the workshop door.

I lay in bed and stared at the ceiling. My heart was beating wrong. Too fast, then too slow.

And deep inside me, something moved.

Not a howl. Not a scream like the night of the ceremony. A low, soft pulse, right under my ribs.

Like a question.

I pressed my hand there and didn't answer it.

---

So I worked. Work was safe.

In two weeks, I redesigned three bonding rituals, two coming-of-age ceremonies, and the whole seasonal rite framework for Crescent Bluff. I changed the fire placements so the moon fell on the couple, not the crowd. I swapped the cheap city candles for beeswax. I cut forty minutes of speeches nobody needed.

The pack leaders came to my presentations with their arms crossed. They left asking for copies.

One old Alpha from the Southmarsh pack shook my hand twice. "Where have they been hiding you?" he asked.

In a room with a jar of dead flowers, I thought. I just smiled.

Kieran came to every presentation. He sat in the back and said nothing. But afterward, he always stayed.

"Why move the bonding vows before the feast?" he asked one night.

"Because people get drunk at the feast," I said. "And then they cry during the vows. Not the good kind of crying."

He was quiet for a moment. "That's very practical."

"I'm a very practical woman. It's my only charm."

His mouth moved. Just at the corner. Not a smile, exactly. But close.

He didn't act shocked that I'd made a joke. He didn't say, *Oh, you're funny?* like the Ironvale girls used to. He just looked at me like he'd known all along, and was glad it had come back.

After that, the late nights got longer. We'd review a design. The design would turn into a conversation. The conversation would turn into silence, the easy kind, with the sea outside and the lamp between us.

He always looked at my face when I talked. Never my notes.

One night, I caught myself sketching on the edge of a ceremony program. A cliff. A full moon. Two shapes standing close. I didn't remember starting it.

Kieran's eyes dropped to the paper. Then they came back up to mine, and stayed there a beat too long.

He didn't say a word.

But something in his face looked like a man who had found a thing he'd lost a long, long time ago.
