After My Mate Destroyed My Wolf, I Built My Own Pack Chapter 1

My wolf woke at 6:40 on a Thursday morning. By noon, Sawyer had killed her.

She came the way they always tell you she will—like a second heartbeat starting up under the first. I was seventeen. I stood in my little room above the pack laundry with my hands flat on the windowsill and I felt her stretch inside my ribs, sleepy and new, and I laughed out loud because it was real, it was finally real, and somewhere in the pack house was the man the Moon Goddess had already chosen for me.

She never even told me her name.

They came for me at eleven. Two Deltas, no explanation. They walked me out to the gravel courtyard where the whole Ironveil Pack stood in a half circle, three hundred wolves, and nobody looked at me except the ones who'd known me since I was a kid, and they looked away fastest.

In the middle of the courtyard, a brazier. Coals white at the center. A long iron rod lying across them with its tip already glowing.

Alpha Sawyer Clark came down the steps in full regalia, the black leather with the Ironveil sigil on the shoulder, and my brand-new wolf surged up so hard my knees nearly went out from under me. Because he smelled like mine. Cedar and cold smoke and something underneath that reached into my chest and pulled.

And over the top of it—layered on his throat, his collar, his wrists—Skyler Kelly's perfume. Vanilla and iron. Thick. Fresh. Rubbed into his skin like a signature.

She came down the steps behind him in a dress the color of wine.

"Hazel Edwards," Beta Benjamin Hamilton read off a paper, flat as a grocery list. "Three witnesses swear you attacked the Alpha's chosen Luna last night."

"I was asleep last night."

"Three witnesses," he repeated, and folded the paper.

Sawyer looked at me then. Really looked. I saw him do the math behind his eyes—laundry girl, no rank, no family, wolf so new it didn't have claws yet—and I watched him decide.

"I, Sawyer Clark, Alpha of the Ironveil Pack," he said, and his voice went out over the courtyard like a struck bell, "reject you, Hazel Edwards, as my mate and Luna. I reject your wolf, your claim, and your blood. Before the Moon Goddess and this pack, I sever what she gave."

The bond didn't break. That's the lie they tell you. It went cold first, a slow frost spreading up from under my breastbone, and then it went empty—like a door closing on a room nobody lives in anymore.

"Kneel."

Alpha tone. It went through my spine like a hand closing around it. My legs folded before I gave them permission and the gravel bit into my knees and I hated him with a clarity I have never once lost.

He lifted the iron out of the coals.

Silver. I smelled it before I saw the color of it, that sweet sick tang, and my little wolf started screaming inside me—not words, just terror, an animal in a closing trap.

He pressed it into my left shoulder.

The sound came first. A wet hiss, like fat in a pan. Then the smell of my own skin. Then the cold—not heat, cold, a spike of freezing silver driving straight down into the place where she lived—and I felt her go. Not die. Worse. I felt her drop, mid-scream, into a silence with no bottom.

My vision went to static. Somebody in the crowd made a noise and swallowed it.

I got my hand into the gravel and pushed myself up on one arm. Blood in my mouth—I'd bitten through the inside of my cheek. I looked up at him and the courtyard tilted and I said it anyway, loud enough to carry, because there was one thing left in the world that was still mine to give away.

"I, Hazel Edwards, daughter of nobody, reject you, Sawyer Clark, Alpha of the Ironveil Pack, as my mate." I spat blood onto the gravel between us. "It's done from both sides now. Nobody can put it back. Not her. Not you. Not the Goddess."

Something crossed his face. Just for a second. The first crack in seven years of them.

Skyler stepped forward, smiling, and told the overseers to take me down.

They put me in the tunnels under Ironveil that same hour. Skyler came to my intake herself, wrote something in a small leather book, and handed it to the ration master. I learned the taste a week later—wolfsbane, ground fine, stirred into gray stew. Bitter as pennies. Every single day for seven years.

My shoulder scarred silver-white and never faded. My wolf never moved again.

But they left me down there with nothing to do but learn. So I learned. Guard rotations. Shift changes. Which ventilation shaft ran under the healer's stores and which grate had a bolt rusted through. Where the water mains fed the pack house and where they didn't. By year four I knew Ironveil better than the Alpha who ruled it.

Year seven, they released me to the border settlement with a canvas bag and a coat that didn't fit.

Three days later I was at the supply depot when the crowd parted and I smelled vanilla and iron.

Skyler crossed the yard in a Luna's white coat, eyes going straight to my bare branded shoulder. She reached into an open crate, lifted out a parcel of raw scrap meat, and threw it on the ground at my feet.

"Eat," she said sweetly. "Wolfless things eat off the floor."

Forty wolves watched. Nobody moved.

Then a young man in a work shirt stepped out of the line and planted himself directly in her sightline.

"Even Omegas eat from plates."

Too Late Mr. Sterling: You Lost Me Novel Cover
9.1
I was the perfect fiancée to Archer Sterling, a tech mogul who demanded I be as polished as his marble countertops. I gave up my art and my identity to fit his world, believing our upcoming wedding was the start of our forever. A mysterious text led me to a hidden folder in a calculator app on Archer’s phone. Inside were photos of him with his assistant, Mia, and texts calling me a "dead fish" and "manageable" collateral for his upcoming IPO. The humiliation peaked at my final bridal fitting. Archer ditched me for a hotel tryst with Mia, leaving me to overhear the salon staff mocking me as a "clueless gold digger." When I collapsed in the hallway, barefoot and broken, Archer didn't offer a hand. He only scolded me for "making a scene" and ordered me to be "supportive" of his busy schedule. The seven years I spent molding myself into his ideal woman were a lie. I wasn't his partner; I was a character in a play he wrote for his investors. My love had been met with calculated contempt, and my sacrifices were treated as his due. That night, I found Mia’s silk stockings shoved in my guest bathroom. The scent of her perfume in my home was the final breaking point. When Archer tried to touch me, my skin crawled with a physical rejection I couldn't mask. I locked the door, shredded the stockings, and called the one man Archer feared: Julian Van Der Bilt. "Does your offer for help include getting me out of here?" I asked. "Pack a bag," Julian’s voice rumbled through the dark. "I'll be there in twenty minutes. Don't let him see you leave."
