Chapter 2

I woke up before the alarm, before Brantley even rolled over. His phone was still warm from my hand. I set it back on the nightstand, screen facing down, exactly where it had been, and I lay there until my heart stopped pounding.

Then I got up and made breakfast like it was any other morning.

Eggs, toast, the good coffee. I put his plate down in front of him and sat across the table, and I made myself look at him the way I used to look at him, back before I knew what his face looked like when he was lying.

"I've been thinking things over," I said. "About the ring."

He stopped chewing. Just for a second. Then he set his fork down slow, like he wanted me to see him being patient. "And?"

"I'll cover it." I stirred my coffee I didn't need to stir. "I just need a few days to move the money around. It's tied up in the settlement account. There are transfer limits."

Something in his shoulders let go. I watched it happen, watched six years of marriage collapse into that one small, relieved exhale, and I understood in that moment that he had never once doubted I would fold.

"Take your time," he said. Magnanimous. Like he was doing me a favor. "I know this is hard for you. I'm proud of you for doing the right thing."

I smiled at him. I don't know how I did it. Some muscle memory, maybe, from years of smiling at things that didn't deserve it.

His phone buzzed against the table. He glanced at me, then down, and his thumbs moved under the edge of the table like he thought a few inches of oak could hide him. I kept my eyes on my coffee and watched him anyway, in the blurred reflection of the toaster. I couldn't read the words. I didn't need to. I knew exactly who he was texting, and I knew exactly what he was saying, because I'd read enough of it the night before to fill in every blank.

"I've got a meeting," he said, standing, kissing the top of my head like nothing had happened, like nothing was happening. "Thank you, Sky. Seriously."

The door clicked shut behind him. I sat there another minute, listening to his car pull out of the driveway, and then I got up and started working.

The apartment felt different when it was just me. Quieter, but not peaceful. I sat on the bathroom floor again, same spot as the night before, and went through his phone screenshot by screenshot. I photographed everything—every message, every photo of the boy on the beach, every joke about my stupidity, every plan to drain my settlement dry. My hands were steady. That surprised me more than anything else that week.

I backed the photos up three times. Once to a cloud account under a username he'd never guess, one I'd made years ago for a book club that dissolved after two meetings. Once to a USB drive I locked inside my glove compartment, tucked under the owner's manual where he'd never think to look. Once to an email address I opened that morning using my maiden name, a name he'd stopped calling me the day we married.

I labeled the folder nothing dramatic. Just a date. March.

Then I opened my laptop and searched for the ring.

It took less time than I expected. Sasha had described it to the whole courtyard in specific, weepy detail—the emerald cut, the halo setting, the rose gold band—like she'd rehearsed the description in a mirror. And maybe she had. Because there it was, third result down, on Amazon. Cubic zirconia. Rose gold plated. Emerald cut with a halo setting.

I actually laughed. One short, ugly laugh that didn't sound like me.

I ordered two. One I'd keep sealed in its box with the receipt, evidence dressed up and ready for whoever needed to see it—a lawyer, a judge, a courtyard full of neighbors who'd looked at me like I was the villain. The other one I held in my palm for a long moment, turning it under the kitchen light, watching it throw off the same cheap sparkle Sasha's precious heirloom probably threw off every time she waved it around at book club.

I didn't know yet what I'd do with the second one. But some instinct, something low and steady in my chest, told me I'd want it close. Told me there would come a day I'd need to put it in my hand and feel the weight of exactly what it was.

Worthless. Fake. Just like everything else they'd built.

Before I closed the tab, my cursor hovered over the search bar one more time. I typed four letters. Hammer.

I scrolled past the sledgehammers, past the framing hammers, past things too big for what I had in mind. I found a small one, rubber grip, the kind you'd use to hang a picture frame. I added it to the cart without letting myself think too hard about why.

Then I checked out, closed the laptop, and went to find something to wear to the rehearsal dinner Macie was hosting that weekend. I had a role to play, and I intended to play it perfectly.
