After My Husband Tried to Steal My Settlement Money Chapter 1

The string lights over the courtyard buzzed faintly against the blue dusk, and somewhere a bluetooth speaker played something soft and forgettable. Twenty, maybe thirty neighbors stood around with paper plates of appetizers, welcoming the Fletchers into unit 14. I stood near the fountain with a plastic cup of rosé I hadn't touched, half-listening to Diana Cho complain about the new parking rules, when I saw Sasha crossing the courtyard toward me.

Sasha Martinez lived two doors down. She was the kind of beautiful that made other women straighten their spines without meaning to—soft brown hair, wide eyes, the permanent look of someone who'd survived something and wanted you to know it gently. She'd moved in eighteen months ago with a story about a husband who died in a boating accident off the coast of Hawaii. Everyone loved her. Everyone brought her casseroles for the first month.

Her eyes were already wet when she reached me. "Skylar," she said, and her voice cracked on the second syllable. "I trusted you."

The courtyard went quiet the way a room does when it senses a scene starting.

"Trusted me with what?" I asked.

"The ring." She pressed a hand to her chest like she was holding something in. "My husband's ring. The one I let you borrow for the gala. It's—" She stopped, swallowed. "It's damaged, Skylar. The setting's cracked. That ring was appraised at five hundred thousand dollars. It was the only thing I had left of him."

I stared at her. "I never borrowed your ring."

"You did." Her tears came faster now, perfectly timed, like a faucet someone had turned with a practiced hand. "Three weeks ago. You said you needed something to match your dress."

I opened my mouth to say I had never once set foot in her apartment, when Brantley stepped out of the small crowd.

My husband. Six years of marriage, and I watched him walk past me to stand beside her. Not beside me. Beside her.

"Skylar." His voice had that low, grave register he used when he wanted people to think he was being reasonable. "This isn't like you. But you have to own this."

"Own what, Brantley? I didn't take her ring."

"She has no reason to lie." He looked around at the neighbors, gathering their eyes like currency. "You've been careless before. We all know that."

I felt my face go hot, then cold. Somewhere behind him, his mother Macie sat in a folding chair in the front row, arms crossed over her cardigan, nodding slowly like a judge confirming a verdict she'd already reached.

"The right thing," Brantley went on, "is for you to use your settlement money to cover it. Six hundred thousand. You have it sitting in an account doing nothing. Sasha lost her husband. The least we can do—the least you can do—is make this right."

I looked at the faces around me. Some pitying. Some already judging. Nobody looked surprised, which meant this had been arranged before I even arrived.

"I need to look into it," I said, because I couldn't think of anything else, and because my legs had started to shake in a way I didn't want anyone to see.

I walked home alone. Nobody followed.

Brantley came in near midnight, smelling like whiskey and someone else's perfume, and fell asleep within minutes. I lay beside him in the dark, staring at the ceiling, running the courtyard scene over and over, looking for the version where it made sense. It never did.

At two in the morning, his phone buzzed on the nightstand. Then again. I reached over, meaning to silence it before it woke him, and the screen lit up with a name I knew too well.

**Sasha.**

I don't know what made me open it. Maybe six years of quiet doubt finally cashing themselves in. The passcode was our anniversary. He'd never once thought to change it.

The messages went back months. Photos I wasn't ready for. Words I wasn't ready for—*I love you, I can't wait until she's gone, soon it'll just be us.* And then, scrolling further, the thread that stopped my heart cold.

*Sasha: she's so trusting, she'll probably just write the check.*

*Brantley: that's my stupid wife for you 😂.*

Beneath it, buried in a folder labeled nothing, photos of a toddler. A boy with Brantley's chin, sitting on a beach towel, laughing. Captioned, in Brantley's own hand: *my son.*

I carried the phone into the bathroom and sat down on the cold tile, my back against the tub, and read every message from the very first one to the very last. The affair. The child. The ring that was never real, the debt that was never mine.

I did not cry. I set the phone carefully on the edge of the sink, screen still glowing, and I made myself very still until the shaking stopped.

Then I started making a list in my head, the way I make every list—clean, precise, complete. The affair. The extortion. The child. The money.

I would play the wife who needed time. I would smile at Sasha in the hallway. I would let Macie forward me her fertility articles without a word of protest.

And when I had everything—every message, every lie, every dollar—I would burn their whole world down in front of the same people who'd watched them try to burn mine.
