Chapter 2

Five days after Christmas, the city had no memory of the holiday. The decorations were still up on Fifth Avenue, but they looked tired now. Leftover. Like guests who hadn't realized the party was over.

I was at the Bergdorf handbag counter, not really looking. Just moving. My attorney had called that morning with a question about the prenup's asset clause, and I needed somewhere to put my hands and my feet while my mind worked through it.

I heard him before I saw him.

Caleb's voice carries. He has always known that. He uses it the way some men use height—to occupy more space than they need.

"There she is."

I turned slowly.

He was walking toward me with Paisley on his arm. She was wearing a camel coat I didn't recognize, and around her neck was the gold chain I had seen in our jewelry box two weeks ago. The one his mother gave him to give to someone he loved.

Paisley's hand rested in the crook of his elbow like she had always lived there. Her eyes found mine and her mouth curved—not quite a smile. Something more careful than that.

Caleb stopped a few feet away. Close enough that the couple browsing beside me glanced over.

"I think you owe me an apology," he said. His voice was pleasant. Conversational. Loud. "For Christmas. For the scene. For this whole divorce circus you're dragging the family through."

A saleswoman behind the counter went very still.

I looked at him. I took my time. I looked at the set of his jaw, the performance of ease in his posture, the way he was angled slightly outward so the room could see him being reasonable while his wife was difficult.

I looked at Paisley. She tilted her head, just slightly. Waiting.

I picked up my bag from the counter.

I walked to the elevator.

I did not say a word. Not one.

The doors closed and I watched my own reflection in the brushed steel. My face was composed. My hands, at my sides, had started to shake.

I pressed them flat against my thighs and held them there until the lobby.

---

I drove to Connecticut without deciding to. My hands just pointed the car north and I let them.

It was dark by the time I turned onto my parents' street. The house had its porch light on. Inside, through the front window, I could see the blue flicker of the television.

I rang the bell. I had a key, but I rang the bell.

Titus opened the door. He looked at me and something shifted in his face—not surprise. Preparation.

"Evelynn." He stepped back. "Come in."

The living room was warm. Edith was already standing. She had set out a tea tray. Three cups.

They had been expecting me.

I sat down. I did not take off my coat.

Titus sat across from me and folded his hands and looked at the middle distance the way he does when he has rehearsed something. Edith perched on the arm of his chair.

"There's something we should have told you sooner," Titus said. "We know that."

He told me cleanly, I'll give him that. No preamble. Paisley was their biological daughter. Born before they adopted me. Circumstances. A closed adoption. She had found them eight months ago.

Eight months.

Edith's eyes were already wet. "Darling," she said. "You have to understand how complicated—"

"Caleb's firm," Titus continued, "has been supporting our consulting practice for the last three years. If that relationship ends—" He paused. "We can't absorb that. We've looked at every option."

"We're asking you to be graceful about this," Edith said. "For everyone's sake. Step back a little. Let things settle. You're strong, Evelynn. You've always been so strong."

She reached for my hand.

I looked at her fingers on mine. The familiar rings. The familiar smell of her perfume.

I thought about the eight months. Every dinner. Every phone call. Every time she said darling and meant it, or seemed to.

I thought about the tea tray. Three cups. Set out before I knocked.

I stood up.

I picked up my coat from my lap and put it on. I buttoned it. I picked up my bag.

"Evelynn." Titus rose. "Be reasonable. We're not asking you to disappear. We're asking you to—"

I walked to the front door. I opened it. The cold came in off the porch.

"Evelynn, please." Edith's voice from behind me. "Evelynn."

I stepped outside.

I pulled the door shut behind me.

I walked to my car. I got in. I started the engine. I watched the porch light through the windshield, the yellow square of it, Edith's silhouette in the doorway, her hand raised.

I put the car in reverse.

I did not turn around.

On the highway back to the city, I drove with both hands on the wheel and the radio off. At some point I realized I was pressing my palm against my abdomen, against the ridge of the scar under my coat.

I moved my hand back to the wheel.

I drove.
